I've owned 3. Great little trucks, no real mechanical issues. My advice: 5 Speed over the Automatic (especially in the 2.20 Four). You need the gear selection to keep the right power band, automatics lug it down. Second: Stick with the 2.20 - Four with the 5 Speed. Great gas mileage; over 20 around town; upwards 28+ highway. The 4.30 V-6 has plenty of power, but fuel economy suffers. In the little S-10, v-6 mileage is MINIMALLY better than a FULL SIZE CHEVY with the V-8. S-10 has good ride, handles well; easy to park; carries most needs of a pickup. Recommend the Extended cab if you can find one.

@gentle285: you cannot shift into 5th gear anytime you want. If your speed isn't high enough, your top gear will drop the rpm of the engine below its power range and it will die out. You have to go through all the gears until your speed is high enough so that your top gear (5th or 6th on most cars) won't drop the rpm too much and then mentain your speed and that gear to achieve the best fuel economy. From my experience 60-70 mph and 6th gear will give you the best economy.

Two things I learned from my dad when I learned how to drive a standard are, people who can't really drive standards or who haven't learned right put it in neutral or press the clutch in and coast to a stop rather than downshifting, and to put it neutral and let the clutch out when you come to a red light or somewhere where you have to stop longer than a couple of seconds and to never sit there with the clutch pushed in

It's possible, but it takes a lot of time and a lot of money. In your case I wouldn't suggest doing a conversion, only because of how common your truck is and its actual worth. @codrinseth15 my mom's 2003 yaris (1L engine) can go 20 MPH in 5th gear... And my instructer's Honda jazz/fit could do it. The engine will only stall if you stop without using the clutch, or if you start in a high gear (1st and 2nd works the best). My mom's car will wobble and struggle if you put it in 5th at about 10 MPH (I've tried it) but above that, it won't stall whatever gear you're in.

Agreed, no problems with coasting to a stop. I can downshift fine, but any usage of the clutch is additional wear on it. Using the brakes with the transmission in neutral coming to a stop puts extra wear on the brakes sure, but brakes are cheaper than a new clutch.

I've noticed that most 5 speed S10s I've ever seen don't have a tach. And every automatic S10 I have seen does. I have a 94 S10 5 speed with no tach. It doenst matter though. If you can really drive a standard you don't need a tach. However, if you feel you need one. At least 94 models and up that I know of, have a light on the cluster that tells you when to shift up.

If you pull the shifter out of gear without the clutch you should blip the throttle to unload the gears

The manual transmission for sure, as long as you're not driving like you're on a drag strip, you'll get better gas mileage than the same truck with an automatic. It's not a HUGE difference, but there still is a small savings overall in the long run.

Lol I had one with a stick and 4.10 gears and she was peppy to about 60mph then fell on its face and am thinking of trading my sn95 convertible for another one

If you want quick acceleration get the HO4.3.

My Isuzu Rodeo has an upshift light too but it's supposed to be an "upshift for fuel economy" light so it comes on when I hit 2,000 RPM XD

No, I'm 22 with a class A cdl, he's pushing the clutch to the floor which activated the clutch brake, 2-4 inches is all you need, you only need to disengage the clutch enough to pull the flywheel away so it shifts smooth

That's a Chevy s10 not a Kenworth, there's no clutch brake!

Ludzidocelowych ( www.ehow.com/about_5697204_clutch-brake_.html and www.answers.com/Q/What_is_a_clutch_brake_on_manual_heavy_duty_truck_transmissions ) I think clutch brakes are only for non-synced transmissions like in the heavy trucks that you drive.

Nothing that can be driven with a Class C liscence has a clutch brake. This truck has synchronizers on every gear, including reverse unlike a 13 speed semi, eliminating the need for a clutch brake. So, to save the synchros to push the pedal down far enough to completely disengage the clutch. There's alot he's doing wrong, but putting the clutch on the floor isn't one of em

Ludzidocelowych clutch brake on an auto? Someone has shit for brains, class C autos with autos use a serise of wet clutches and a hydraulic coupling called a torque converter. This is not an eaton fuller heavy truck 18spd auto. The eaton fuller 18spd autos are un-synchronized manuals with some computer contols that float the gears for you

I think the reason people think he is doing bad with the gear is cause his foot is on the clutch even though in could not be pressing it, think people before you say something
