But the original Hurst lightning rod shifter had "Hurst" stamped into them. As he said: "We are not putting the name Hurst into them, because it has with license to do." So they are re-built ones from the original Lightning Rod. And this car was a Cutlass Supreme, so no lightning rod shifter was avaiable for this model.

I don't get it, this system just seems so unnecessarily complex. Honestly curious here, what are the advantages, other than the lack of a clutch (which, personally, I would consider a detriment), of this kind of shifter system? Seems to me that a manual transmission, by comparison, would not only be a cheaper and simpler solution, but would allow more precise control over what the car is doing and therefore be faster. Please, correct me if I'm wrong, however.
@ttpawla123

DerMetzger . it was a cool way to shift faster without as you say using a clutch. they are also very cool in my opinion. does it increase performance in a normal v8 car, no. but many use them at a race track in turbo buicks for drag racing and easibility 1-2, 2-3 shifts

Can you stop naturally in overdrive? Or have to downshift every time to 1st?
@raymondwilson9662
4 жыл бұрын
There designed when the left shifter is set to the overdrive position it’s a normal shifter when you drop the left shifter out of over drive then it will release the middle shifter then when you drop the middle shifter then that unlocks the far right shifter into first gear so if you simply leave it in the overdrive the trans shifter like any other shifter these shifter real intention was for drag racing
@Necronomous
4 жыл бұрын
@@raymondwilson9662 Hmm, if you put it into overdrive the car works like a normal automatic car? Sorry if I ask, I am from Sweden and here we don't have that much automatic cars. Or well, Volvo nowdays only doing their cars automatic tho since 2018. I meant, I am born in -81, so I grew up more or less with Volvo manual geared ones. My uncles did have Oldsmobile Cutlass Brougham -81 diesel and a Olds Custom Cruiser -81 or -82 gasoline. When I took my drivingslicense, the year after I started to drive mom and dad's Dodge Royal -59 with push to gear transmission. I know how that one works tho. Heard much of the Hurst Lightning Rod when I was a kid. It looked sick, but I never did understand how the transmission worked, and haven't figured out completely even to this day.

4 жыл бұрын
@@raymondwilson9662 Well, if you got the 2 shift in up position, and takes the left shifter to overdrive, does this shifter works like a normal automatic transmission, or do you need to shift like in the video all the time? Never seen any Hurst Lightning Rod go full auto when they show how the shifter works when they shows it on any youtube-clip so that made me wonder. I know some of the transmissions, even if single shift-rod for racing, they can still make the car shift automatically when they put it on a specific way. Like drive, but yet you can shift all the gears 1 through 4 manually, or 1 through 3 manually, and even so if 3 speed still shift up to overdrive manually. But if they put the shiftleaver on like drive, it will shift totally automatically with zero need for interference on the gearselection. I hope you understand my thoughts, a bit faulty grammar I may say. I completely mixes pure american with teabagging english in some scentences. Perhaps some australian too. Darn, I need to stop watch series and shit without swedish translation texts. Too much YouTubing with both american, english and australian with zero translations. That's a bad teabagging kangaroo dropping buffalosteak that went missing.

Necronomous you can’t move either one of the two shifters on the right until you take it out of overdrive they stay locked until you pull the left shifter back one notch that puts the car in third then you pull the middle shifter back that will put you in second then you would pull the far right shifter back that puts you in first gear so now when you take off all you have to do is push the right shifter forward the trans will shift into second then you push the middle shifter forward then the trans will shift into third then you would push the left shifter forward and that’ll put the car into overdrive and if your driving around town not looking to race you would simply throw the car from park into overdrive and it’s a regular auto trans that will shift normally
