-More than practical :) It happens when you buy stuff for years and don't have a layout, so you don't really know just how much you have until you *can* run them. -I pre-ordered them through my local dealer. You can search for the subway sets on the MTH website (they have a dealer locator feature) at railking dotcom, 2006 volume 1 catalog. You can probably get them online, but all mine I got through brick-and-mortar stores or vendors at train shows.

For some strange reason, when i watch this vid, i want to sing the theme song to Welcome Back Kotter---lol ---- love the vid here, very authentic especially with the conductor with the New York accent, and yes, the authentic typical announcement of a delay due to congestion ahead!!! lol, I subscribed to your channel and look foward to seein more of your vids.

There are pickup rollers underneath the car that pick up power from the center rail, and it is returned through the wheels. This practice goes back to the early 20th century.

Depends on whether or not they were designed for them. A number of rapid-transit railways in Asia have overhead wire with pantographs. Cleveland's subway also uses overhead wire. There are videos of it here on KZitem.

The Lionel one is the only O gauge subway with motorized doors. MTH's only experiment with this was the earlier R-32, and those were manual.

MSRP is $400 for the powered set, about $180 for the two-car addon. You might find them for less if you shop around, but popular sets (like this one) tend not to get disounted all that often.

@tufffoot Only the middle and one of the outside rails need connecting. The train wheels will bridge the outer rails since they're electrically identical. If you're really paranoid, you can connect the outside rails together--it won't hurt anything.

They are run-able. I'm taking one of the power cars in for service tomorrow, as it started exhibiting a problem right at the end of this video. Everything else that has appeared in my videos is still operational to the best of my knowledge. Since the test track can only accomodate one train at a time, and I still have a good-size chunk of my collection to test, I haven't made any repeat performances yet.

@tufffoot Instead of screwing the bridge to the mounting blocks, drill larger holes for wood dowels to fit all the way through (2 in each block). Re-drill the holes in the bridge slightly larger so the dowels slip into them, only tightening up at the very top of the holes. This way, the bridge lines up perfectly every time you set it in place. Then lay your track, placing the joints directly over the joints in the wood below, and add power connections.

I bought them from the MTH parts department "store" at the TCA meet that takes place at York, PA in April and October. You can order them from MTH's parts department, but I don't recall the number since I simply picked them from a bin at their display, To swap them, remove the E-clip and washer from the coupler mount and swap the parts. You may not even need to take the truck off. Trickiest part is the E-clip-It's prone to shooting off and getting lost, so be sure to restrain it.

There are no switches out on the loop, so no. The only derailment I ever had out there was with the Weaver+Lionel grain train. While attempting to start a 42-car train, some of the cars pulled off the inside of one of the curves (stringlined) and spilled a half-dozen hoppers. Some were slightly damaged, but they were repaired and returned to service.

Yup. Middle rail is hot and outside rails are return. The non-powered cars are rather heavy, their trucks are like the ones in locomotives but without gears. If you've ever handled an O Gauge dummy diesel, you'll have an idea of what these cars are like. It takes a lot of power to run a 10-car train of these, I'm pushing things as it is with a 100-watt transformer :) .

O Gauge trains can have up to 22 volts on the track. 18 is typical if using command control. SInce locomotives in "O" tend to be power hogs, transformers tend to range up as high as 400 watts. So, you'd likely have to present wet body parts to get a buzz off the track. Far more likely is getting burned from having a metal bracelet/watch band short across the third rail and getting it heated up real hot real fast (before the breaker kicks in). (deleted and reposted to correct a typo)

I pre-ordered it through one of my dealers. You can find them at major MTH dealers, Ebay, or use the dealer locator function at MTH's site at railking dotcom. The item number is 30-2671-1 Note that the set in the video consists of two four-car sets and a two-car add-on. You might have to search for awhile to find a set as these were rather popular.

Not this one. The only MTH subway with opening doors are the R32 set, and those are manually operated. The Lionel M-7 commuter cars also have manually opening doors. There is an opening-doors animation in the Coors Light set (which I have online here), but I don't think you could fit a mouse in there :) The only model subway with motorized doors right now is the R-27 made by Lionel. One of them can be seen pushing my camera car in "Pacing CamTrak in the NJ Hirailers Subway"

These are a pair of full four-car sets plus the two-car addon. I didn't buy the R62-on flatcar since I already had 10 cars as a result. You can Google for, or search Ebay for item number 30-2671-1

@bluer68 If running at full power (command control:18-20 volts) and your hands are wet (and you are also touching a ground) , you might get a tingle. If on the other hand you get a metal watchband across it and an outside rail, you could get it hot enough to cause burns before the circuit breaker kicked in.

See my response to "RayDior" above. Nowadays, O Gauge trains are only produced according to dealer orders, with a little more to cover warranty replacements. Except for Williams by Bachmann, you won't find sets like this repeated year after year, so you have to jump on them when they are announced in case they sell out quickly. The dealer I got these from sold out what he ordered.
@RailRide

Maybe a little less than a grand. Mind you, this is two (four-car) sets and a two-car add-on. A four-car set, including one power car, will run you about $400-$500. It sold rather briskly, so few dealers will be discounting them.

1: The "correct" sign is an MTA trademark. Lionel possesses the only license to use the correct logos at the time this train was made. 2. It's in the RailKing line, not Premier (reserved for B-Division cars). *Nobody* makes model passenger cars out of stainless steel. 3. MTH lost the license to produce MTA-branded subway trains when they made the graffiti sets (see Wikipedia), therefore they cannot use MTA logos. Ask on ogaugerr dotcom subway forum for aftermarket decals).

I only have the first issue sets. Mine are PS-2, so it's possible the sound file may have changed slightly between versions. There is some compatibility between 3-volt PS2 sound files and PS3 ones (offering the _potential_ (i.e. unverified) to load the older sounds into a PS3 board), but I'm not sure how far it goes.

I have a TCL SVC200, (reviewed here: kzitem.info/news/bejne/k2im0n-EmouSlWU), which fits in smaller spaces than a typical GoPro. I just haven't had an opportunity to use it for any cab-ride videos since I got it. When this video was filmed, (2008) available GoPro cameras were still standard definition. This particular video was filmed with a MiniDV camcorder (JVC GR-DX77), sooooo it was about as good as it was going to get (480p). The bigger issue is lighting--this room has no overhead light fixtures and most of the sessions were done when sunlight was being reflected into the room from the house across the street. I'm currently working on improving that last issue before doing any more videos there.
