I'd personally like to see the same tests done on Japanese cards to see if they're more durable and less prone to scratching of the holofoil as from my personal experience they seem much better quality cards usually! Excellent video as always! :D

I'm sure that they'd be a lot more durable. I buy large "retirement" collections from japan regularly and have had cards which come together in a box without sleeves that have been left for many years grade 9.5 and even on one occasion a 10 with CGC. When cards are heavily played as well it's very hard to cause any damage to the corner and edges but it does cause some minor scratching on the holofoil.

RIP Chansey... one of my favorite Evolutions holos. This was a good vid, Pat. I think more people need to learn and realize just how sensitive and susceptible cards are to damage. I guarantee years down the road it'll be tough to find really clean Celebrations bulk because of the cards being all holo and people handling them poorly or at least less than ideally because it's "just bulk".
@hdmaster

I have tested on both Japanese and English Celebration set holo cards, it seems like the Japanese Holos are more scratch resistant than the english one. Only slight pressure on the card will damage the english holo when you put the card in and out of the sleeve.

Great research all around. One thing I'd like to see tested is the use of "perfect fit" sleeves and if they cause Holo scratches/edge wear. Also, the combination of perfect fit sleeves and one-touch magnetic cases. These are becoming popular with the backlog at grading companies persisting. This way collectors can still get a similar experience of a card in a slab but not wait a year/pay an arm and a leg.

I wonder if different holo patterns have different scratchability. The Sword and Shield holo patterns seem to get less scuffed than the more “smooth” holo
@boz7737
2 жыл бұрын
Yes there are differences! Some holo cards have more of a rough surface and they scratch SUPER easily!!!! Best example I could think of are the first EX cards such as mewtwo ex. They have a very rough surface that seemlingly collects scratches just by breathing on them... Its not just the EX cards, but also all of their reverse holo cards from that set. So its not about the holo pattern itself, but the general surface and the way these cards were printed. You can usually tell by gently touching the cards to understand what I mean. Some feel almost "sticky" and get scratched WAY easier than smoother ones. I think they fixed this issue and only certain sets were affected by this issue btw.

A quality microfiber will not scratch a card. The card will actually harm the towel more since it has the greater surface tension. Sebum oil(body oil) will degrade anything that is paper and ink with time. That's why high end art is handled with super soft cotton gloves.

I mean in a way it is. In the sense that you can get a card graded. It returns a 7. So you crack it and resend it and it comes back an 8. You repeat until it returns a 9. Or you send in a different card and it comes back a 9 so you crack and resend until it it comes back a 9.5 or 10. It can be very subjective. Even in the terms of buying general use cards on the NM/LP/MP/HP scale. I have purchased cards that were MP but looked more LP to me while also received LP cards that looked way more MP then other MPs in the same batch purchase. Every sellers grades are different and every graders grading is different. Subjective would be a better way to phrase it than a scam though.

Do the same, but on full arts - i feel they have a LOT higher chance of getting scratches from putting in and out of sleeve as the WHOLE card is holo, leaving nowhere to put pressure on the card to slide it in without a possible contact scratch with the sleeve. I sometimes even put my finger inside a new sleeve and press my nail into the top corners to open it more before putting cards in. Regular sleeves rather than soft sleeves pose the most risk, although corners can catch with soft sleeves as well. Kept my Blaine's arcanine pack fresh in a sleeve for close to 2 decades. Never removed it. And when I pulled out of storage and removed it from the sleeve I noticed it looked played. Now it's double sleeve for life.

I'd love to see how these tests hold up against modern v or vmax cards as it could effect expensive alt arts

Thank you for doing a video like this! I am always careful when handling my cards, but I do move them around quite a bit in the 9--slot binder sleeves! The holos I put in a soft sleeve and put a plastic sticky tab on the back to pull it out of whatever I put it in, but I didn't realize it could still be scratched from the soft sleeve!

Thanks for this video. I've been stuck on putting cards valued over 100 or close to it into one of the hard cases and have felt their best in a soft case in my binder but may as well use the hard sleeves 😅

I'll always remember being 10 years old at school, seeing a younger child trade for a £20 yugioh card and before I could even tell him to be careful he folded the entire thing in half so that it would fit in his pocket.

Bringing up sand was a great point. Sand has a hardness level high enough to scratch glass, so scratching a thin layer of ink is ez pz

I'd like to see a video of you letting us know what we can do to protect the cards from these everyday mistakes. Do I wear gloves to open the pack? Open it a certain way? Hoe to get it in the sleeve with the least possible damage etc etc. Thank you for the educational video though. You got a new subscriber :)

I gently hold the sides of the sleeve when I put them in. My downfalls is putting them in a stack. Shuffling through them even as easy as you can, still scratches the holes. I say binder it in a quality binder with the sleeve. That way they don't move as much

Sleeves, even ones from Ultra Pro, are never super clean or dust free. Usually need to double sleeve from opposite ends to prevent any dust or other particulates getting in over time, then hard case over that. Even with doing that or having it PSA graded, it's not guaranteed to protect it from machine movement. But basic movement jolting around, it's 99% of the time perfectly safe. I like to also double sleeve and then place into a binder - all Ultra Pro of course, never had any issues but I don't throw it around.. lol
