The Silca tire pressure calculator says I should be running 50 psi on smooth gravel. So I tested average speed on a smooth gravel course for 20, 30, 40, and 50 psi, aiming for 200 watts of power. I also tested average speed on a singletrack course for the same tire pressures. On smooth gravel, I find not much of a speed difference between 30, 40, and 50 psi. On singletrack, 20 psi is fastest, but 20 psi is MUCH slower on smooth gravel. Based on these findings, I'd recommend ~35-40 psi for a typical race which has mostly smooth gravel with chunky sections. I'm a very heavy rider (215 lb/95 kg), so lighter riders would probably adjust this downward.
