I told you it would work!! If you take about 5 centimeters of unravelled jute and fluff it up, it's catches a spark from a fire steel nearly every time! Fluff it around the wick of your fire starter and you're good to go!! Subscribed after watching three videos. You're addictive!!

Congratulations! Looks like the fire-starters are a success! A couple of those would be very handy in a day-pack or get-home bag. I like your technique using the sticks to help hold the wood you're chopping. Accidentally cutting yourself when you're out in the woods is no small matter, and that seems a good way to keep your hands away from the blade. Nice job!

I was raised on a ranch and don’t know how many cords of wood I have chopped in my time. But that was the first time seeing “chopsticks” used to hold the wood. Good idea, you also proved that you can teach an old dog new tricks. Looking forward to your future videos.

Thank you for being persistent in your endeavours. I use to belong to a group of four hardy sea kayakers who ventured out and explored into the British Columbia Vancouver Island region during the summer season . We live in a moderately moist rain forest region and I was in charge of fire making in our group hierarchy. My designation was sometimes described as the fire bug or harshly as the “pyromaniac” since I employed skills I inherited from my ancient days from scouting and officer survival techniques over a forty or so year span. I love your techniques as they act as a refresher course from days and years gone by. Many thanks from a retired Mountie of the RCMPolice and Canadian Boy Scout. Stay safe.

Another enjoyable video to watch Emilie. Good to see the fire starters worked well and got a good little fire going in the wet.. Great bit of fire making. The idea of holding the log with two sticks is good one . It's easy to have an accident if you don't. Sorry to hear you had to wait weeks for rain. You should come to Britain the weather is almost as eccentric as the politicians. It rains almost all of the time and always when I go wild camping.

Was watching you splitting logs. I learned a special trick from a clever woodland guy to easily split wood... You stand feet apart about shoulder width place the piece of wood just behind your feet "safety incase glanced blow"... Two hands on the axe swing fast through between legs... The momentum going straight thru splits all but most stubborn logs... Works up to about 6inch diameter... You don't need chopping base nor to hold it... Its a very good ergonomic method

I saw your video about making your firestarters. So I collect paper rolls and old candles, and made a lot of cords, for lightening it. And bought a pot for melting (candles) in the water bath. I got near the same Mora Knive last week, in a big DIY shop here in germany for half price, because last piece. Sometimes you have luck in your life. Info for Germans: Look at Hornbach-Shops for cheapest prices for Mora Knives. Greetings from sw germany.

My method of chopping firewood with small axe (or big knife): Place axe on top of the wood then use another piece of wood to hit the axe. This way the only thing moving is the wood used to hit the axe.

I like the use of tongs for safety especially if you are not confident with the hatchet. Better safe than sorry. Battoning is also something else you could try. Drive your axe in for your first chop then hit the back of the axe with another stick or log like you were hitting the axe with a hammer.

I also am not a huge fan of splitting small wood. A good way to keep your hands out of the way is to hold it parallel to the hatchet handle and split from the side. I hope that makes sense?
@BinManSays87

You should really saw your logs to the length of your axe and hold it length ways, under your axe handle and head because it's the safest way and then when you partially split the log you can pry it open by holding the axe handle and pulling the log clockwise to save energy 😋

Emelie: Success! Lighting a fire in damp conditions is a challenge to be sure. Keeping a fire going when it's raining is even tougher. Looks like your fire starter held up its end of the bargain on both counts. If you were up against it in the wild and had to choose between having a good, sustainable fire but no shelter, or a good shelter but no fire, which would you choose? Stay safe out there. Cheers.
@ghostfather1390

you made a nice little fire in the rain, well done, consider making some fuzz sticks to get the fire started more easily try batoning to split wood, it will be safer than that clever, but precarious, set up if I might suggest clearing a fire circle before laying a fire for safety reasons, please. it may have been raining, but do not Ever get arrogant with fire, that is how people get hurt, and forests get destroyed. while that moss may have been wet when you started, the fire will dry it out, and if it catches a coal, which reaches to the tree roots, that can cause a forest fire faster than you realize, even if it has been pouring rain. please stay safe Emelie, I want to see you continue learning for a long time to come. congratulations on getting a sponsor(?)!

Being careless with fire *anywhere* will get you burned! My grandfather was a professional firefighter, so I learned that at a young age! I think if she had intended to sustain the fire for a long period of time, she would have built a stone base with logs on top of it.
