I have a hack for your plastic grocery bags other than the hanging container. Take a box that fits in the drawer that you keep them in and tape it all shut. Then cut a hole in the top similar to a Kleenex box. You poke the bags in one at a time and pull them out one at a time. It keeps the drawer much neater and is a container boundary that keeps you from keeping too many. You could wrap the box with some pretty contact paper but it functions great as is. It also can act as a drawer divider if it doesn't take up the whole drawer. For example the box with bags on one side and regular trash bags slid in next to it. Just a hint if anyone is looking for a solution for bags that is in a drawer.

Yea! I reuse a Kleenex box to hold plastic bags too. I have one in each bathroom for the bathroom trash cans. But I also thought maybe she could use the snack portion of that baggie organizer for plastic store bags too… if not, put the scissors in there and lose the basket they are in. Or… put chip clips in there.

Regarding the water bottle shelves, it’s not always about maximizing space it’s about Function. If it makes it easier for you to access them- with the bonus that nothing is hidden in a second row, I’d say it’s a winner!

For organizing spices I would say my best tip is to alphabetize. It sounds obsessive, but is SO helpful. It helps when finding them and prevents duplicate purchases. I also like getting uniform spice jars and pouring the purchased spices into them. I haven’t bought a matching set, but we regularly get a certain kind of pesto sauce that comes in the perfect size jar for my spices. I’ve been slowly replacing them. It works for me because for the most part I ignore best by dates with spices. 😁
@amstreater
2 жыл бұрын
I’m about to organise a spice drawer and I might alphabetise! Right now they’re in baskets on a shelf, vaguely grouped into “whole spices”, “ground hot spices”, “aromatics and herbs” and then everything else, but I still end up digging around. I reuse the supermarket jars they came in (I refill them from the bulk store) so they’re mostly uniform but it’s a mix of spice jars from 2 different stores so some are slightly taller and narrower. I tend to buy larger amounts these days, so I might start using the empty jars from the tomato relish I use as they’d be a good size. I’m looking forward to having them all sorted and also freeing up that shelf space!

If you have to use the space, you should organize it for you. I am short and my hubby is tall and having to get a stool or call him isn't always efficient. Love your videos. For the water bottles / mason jars...an idea would be to add a shelf that was just at the height needed (~4.5") for all the water bottles / mason jars to lay in one row across the cabinet. No organizer needed. I did this with two of our cabinets. One has a shelf at 4.5" above the coffee mugs for the travel mugs. The other has a shelf at 4.5" above the dishes for the water bottles. They lay on their sides just like in the organizer but on the shelf in a single row. Easy to access and maintain. And that frees up another whole shelf for other things.

Dawn, for some people seeing something really resonates. You say in order to organize you have to first declutter, so show the basket over flowing with hats and gloves and scarves and then a basket that is simplified with only the NECESSITIES. Or a spice cabinet, a shoe closet whatever, but some people need to see how out of control A looks compared to B, and then that might be just the push needed to get started. Make them really want it. ( the decluttered way) 😉. Just a thought. Love your videos. Watching from Michigan 🥶

I made some dividers for my kitchen linen drawer out of a bit heavier cardboard (from a box). I made them kind of z-shaped so that the “legs” go against the front and back of the drawer in different directions, with the long middle straight as the divider. I covered them with white duct tape to make them look nice from above. I didn’t make the top and bottom sections perfect, equal lengths, but you don’t notice it because linens are folded kind of Marie Condo style. If I did it in a different drawer, I would make the top and bottoms of the “Z’s” more standard.

I love organizing!! I do one small section/area at a time. one drawer or a section of a large closet etc. ask yourself what would make it function better for your needs? try to visualize it. take measurements of the area and the items that will go in it, largest item, smallest item. then search for existing ideas, pintrest, KZitem. lastly, either create or buy storage solutions. don't worry as much for it being pretty but aim for functional. if it's organized well it will look good regardless. the prettier the storage solution the pricier it is!

I bought a SpiceStack from Amazon in 2011 and it still is one of my favorite organization products. I love that I can label and easily access the spices by pulling out the drawer without knocking the rest over. No more accidentally buying duplicate spices, because each spice has it's space and it forces me to keep a limited number that will fit in the space.

Love seeing all the "possibilities" in action - or almost action! I was really curious recently about spices and extracts and those expiration dates on them. Here's what I found out: SPICES: According to the USDA, spices are a "shelf stable" item and many can be used almost indefinitely - as long as they don't smell bad or lose their smell altogether, indicating they won't flavor much of anything anymore. Ground spices deteriorate quicker; whole spices last longer. Three to four years past should still be just fine, but they may lose potency. They won't hurt you, but they may not taste as good. Bottom line: smell them! EXTRACTS: Many pure extracts are made with an alcohol base, which will get better with time (think aged fine wine). Real vanilla is one that gets better and better! Some may become stronger after opening, as the alcohol may evaporate some, but they're still OK to use. IF, however, they have a strange odor, you might want to toss it. Expiration dates for them are mostly a "best if used by" guide, but many can easily go several years past the date. I can attest to the "still usable past the expiration date" on both spices and extracts!

Once I discovered that info about spices, I ordered bulk packages from amazon for the ones I use ALL THE TIME... basil, marjoram... Another way to use vanilla - buy beans, put them in cheap vodka, leave them a few months (or longer), I have two bottles in rotation. You can add the vodka to the "empty bottle" without adding new beans for quite a while. I then take out the waiting bottle so the just filled one can steep. I did have to throw away an almost full bottle of poppy seeds - it was rancid! I probably got it for one dumb recipe. Sesame seeds also will go bad quickly.

Thank you so much for the ideas. I live in a house built in late 1800's, once we get the kitchen remodeled next year? I'm excited to utilize these ideas. Currently our cabinets were made of plywood & doors were just cut out for access to cabinets & put back on with hinges. I have 10' ceilings which is awesome BUT cabinets got all the way up and i have to use a 8'ladder if i want to use the top cabinets. Which is all empty space. LOVE our home, been here 24 yrs, major remodeling since we moved in. Just have kitchen & back porch left to do. We r talking plaster & lath removed, insulate, sheet rock walls, new wiring, new plumbing, new windows, stripping of paint to go back natural wood. We are doing it all ourselves, which really went slow when chikdrennwere home, lol. But excited to find you & a few other channels for ideas to make my house better & a whole lot more orginized

Thank you Dawn, for this thorough video🙏 You found so many useful options to share with us. I appreciate how you are treating yourself to more permanent, long-lasting storage solutions. But upgrading only after you decluttered, found economical baskets/bins to store things and then gave yourself time to observe how you & your family used the new systems. I have an idea for the water bottles. I’m petite as well 🥰 and I found a wonderful lazy-Susan turntable with sides. Copco has 10, 12, and 18” diameter, skid-free versions. The side wall on all of them is about 3-3/4” high. The sidewalls are so helpful to corral tall skinny things like water bottles. Also can be used for hair care bottles, cleaning supplies... I found mine at Bed Bath and Beyond Hope this helps 💕

It's funny how you get used to how things are jumbled all together in the kitchen utensil drawer, but I know how they are placed so easy to find for me(not husband , though). The bamboo dividers are such an eye opener! super idea! So I ordered a set! My silverware drawer also has a section off to the side that is a hodge podge of lids, small knives, etc. the expandable utensil divider does look so much neater. I will declutter that section and probably order the utensil divider as well. I sorted out my tea bags into an open container , left over from other decluttering jobs, and put it on bottom shelf to be accessible for hubby and I to reach( not up on top shelf). Thank you ,Dawn, for always coming up with new ideas. You have inspired me this past year that I have been watching you, and Cas and Dana as well! love you and have a great day!!

This was such a fun video to watch! Loved it. I'm all over that mug organizer. Our travel mugs are out of control. I'm a Bee and I'm married to a Butterfly (slob/hoarder) so we have a lot on the counters but it is neat, clean, zoned, and organized. My Bee kicks in inside the cabinets. My best organizing so far is to create a basket that's just the right size for the Instant Pot accessories (so I don't buy more) and the Air Fryer accessories and then label each basket. They stay neat and tidy with everything in its place. I also have baskets for my spices and they are labeled by type: Mexican, Cajun, Italian, Meats, & Veggies. The ones I reach for every day are front and center (salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic salt, etc.) and then the ones I rarely use are on the top shelf in a basket.

The thing I like about the water bottle organizer/holder, is that by holding them horizontally, the shelf they are on doesn’t have to be so high. I got some cool ideas from this video. I'm a visual micro-organizer, so I actually prefer the dollar store drawer organizers since they're smaller and can be grouped or used individually. I keep my spices in a deep drawer with labels on the tops, grouped in baskets to categorize them: spice blends, herbs, whole spices, peppers, etc. I keep the back-stock of extras in the top cabinet shelf just like yours (but in a basket so I can pull them all down at once and nothing gets lost in the back).

The Grommet used to sell these small plastic napkin-holder looking things that were awesome and I can no longer find them. That box thing is a space waster. Since I am vertically challenged, I use containers in my upper cabinets to hold things like spices, seasonings, coffee pods, tea bags, kids snacks, etc. Whatever can be corralled in a box or small container. I label the tops of the spices so it's easier to see what it is. Then all I need to do is bring down the box and select what need. The bottles don't all tip over and it's easy to manage. I also use a box in my lower cabinet for my plastic food containers with the corresponding lids.the boxes are from the dollar tree and sometimes I use larger food containers or baking pans to hold my items.
