The electric fence isn’t really for keeping the chickens inside. From just a fence standpoint it will do that fine. The reason you electrify it is to keep ground predators out. Chicken’s actually are pretty hard to zap, only their feet and face are really conducive; feathers provide pretty good electrical insulation.

When I was kid we lived out in the country and one of our swimming holes was in the middle of a cow pasture ( creek running through) well one day the farmer decided to play a prank on us an act super pissed we were there an run us off. All my friends ran an slid under the electric fence, me still having water in my eyes went to go under and eyes still blurry thought my friend was reaching down to pull me out. He wasn't, and I reached up and grabbed a hold of the wire. For a good 30 seconds I was stuck to that fence getting LIT UP. Finally the farmer realized what was happening and ran over there an ripped my hand off it, getting shocked himself. Afterwards I couldn't see straight for awhile and all my muscles felt like I just ran 100 miles. The farmer had to literally carry me home an explained what happened and felt horrible. He almost killed me that day, but he also 100% saved my life!!

Take a long blade of grass, maybe 8-10”, and hold one end while touching the other end to the fence. Slide it in on the fence until you start to feel a tingle, then you know it’s working. The electrical resistance in the blade of grass makes this work. We did this all the time at our dairy farm to test the electric fences.

You can't subject an animal to something you wouldn't subject yourself too. Which is why I make my kids touch these, hog line, and the dogs shock collars (I also do it. lead by example or don't lead). No knife reward given. It's not a matter of want, its a matter of knowing first hand what you are doing to keep control. Also keeps them from jacking the shock collars up to 100 and hurting the dogs, since they respect the collar bc it humbled them too.
