Can't wait to see future iterations. Competition is something that I find lacking in a lot of market garden tools.

Living in the sticks in Nagano Japan, you see these paper pot or chain pot planters every day. Well, No. I have seen the paper pots in the local "JA" Agriculture store, but I have never seen a real planter. In the past I had seen a lot of DIY paper pot transplanter videos on You tube, but a search now days come up pretty dry. If anyone wants to search in 'Japanese' here are some key words: DIY - 自作 , Chain pot - チェーンポット , Paper pot - ペーパーポット, Transplanter - 移植機, and the name of the red Japanese transplanter is - ひっぱりくん. Have Fun.

Simplicity, speed of planting and quick teaching make the Japanese planter the winner. Both can use improvements to make them better.

I recall when you first considered the paper pot transplanters, you had some concern about the paper chain material itself, something to do with the glue used and not being cleared for organic use? I assume you had those concerns resolved?

That is a lesson in torque equations. Ask an engineer and it will be solved instantly 😊. Your idea with a front roller is definitely a winner!

Wasn't their a patent on the Japanese one. 6400 sek + postage for the Australian one and same price for the Japanese. These tools could be made at home quite cheaply during the winter months. The paper pots seem quite expensive too @ 26 sek each.

Try removing the small back wheels on the japanese version. I'd recon that you'll see better covering of the rows by doing that. Downside is it will be harder to pull along. But perhaps you can negate that downside by making those flaps longer and flatten out at the end, so they become small skies of sort that rides on top of the compost.

You didn't mention the width of your beds. I only ask as I'll be trying Jean- Martin Fortiner syatem of 30" wide beds X 100 ft

Hi Richard, What if you put wheels on you can push back and forth that actually runs in the footpath, that is much harder. I believe a configuration like that should not be that hard?

I'm sure that thing does its job, but, just from the looks of it, if I had to work with it it would take me about an hour to start contemplating suicide. Honestly, even the one on wheels looks a bit frustrating to use. The paper pot chains, and the way you seed them, are brilliant, and a pleasure to work with I'm sure. But I'd rather just use simple hand tools and a three step process (dig, place, cover), to get them into the ground. It should still go pretty fast, and the plants would be planted deeper.

Instead of a brick you can throw a shovel full of soil in the back end for weight.....disclosure of Aussie bias here. Watched a mate plant a 35m bed by hand. Paper pots turn planting into pleasure.

Seems that soil conditions make a big difference; perhaps a trial among different soil conditions would help. However the Aussie model seems (at least in video) not their ultimately produced model? In my larger home garden have planted 450+ onions, by hand. Perhaps this is the best way, until wr have a larger amount to plant.
