It's awesome seeing these Crossfire cards get a second look with a really fast CPU and mature drivers. Oof at those 1% lows though. How did it actually feel when playing games?

It was a pleasure to check them out, thanks again for the cable Nathan 👍 As far as actually playing the games go, for the most part the micro sutter made the average feel like it was lower than it actually was 😅 To be fair though, the only games that were choppy enough to bother me were Far Cry 2, FEAR, and STALKER as they tended to have the terrible combo of large frametime spikes AND microstutter. The rest were fairly pleasant to be honest, I enjoyed my time with these cards quite a bit and they were way more... let's say usable than I was expecting 🤣 Better than some other CrossFire setups I've tried for sure.

Another excellent video! The x1900 crossfire setup does quite well. I didn't get to play with any of the X1800, X19x0, or X2900 series at home since I was fairly stuck with my X800 until I bought a HD3850 just after starting my new job in Dec '07, but then ended up with HD3870 crossfire 3-4 months later (sold my 3850 to a friend but later actually got it back-actually got his whole PC in exchange for doing the build for him-when he upgraded though that was a few years later with a GTX 470) after I dropped my 775dual-VSTA + E6300 for a refurb'd Maximus Formula and Q6600. The only ATI GPU in those generations I messed with was an X1400 on a Dell Inspiron E1505 that I bought my sister for her high school graduation that she gave back in the early 2010s when 'it broke'(...she obviously spilled something on it...suprisingly only damaging the keyboard which I replaced, but I bought her a new laptop anyways, an Asus U43J on discount). I certainly saw plenty of this series though at work, and I had an EAX1950 Pro in my main dev machine for a couple of years and then kept it at one of my test benches for even longer because I absolutely loved how the cooler looked on that card.

Much appreciated man 🙏 Loved hearing another one of your stories 😀How did you like your 3850 when you had it? Must have been a huge jump up from an X800! The Mobility X1400 would have been alright for a mobile GPU but it's definitely a far cry from the whole enchilada that the X1900 cards were! I'm a big fan of the ASUS EAX1950 PRO as well, love the simple and clean design. If I was on the lookout for an X1950 PRO I would definitely get that variant!

@@SPNG Yeah, since to totality of her PC gaming was limited to UT2004 and Crazy Taxi, the X1400 was plenty, and I didn't want to buy her something without a discrete GPU at all. I definitely loved the HD3850 even though I only ran it for about a quarter of a year. And, not only was the GPU a big step up (and CPU was a nice upgrade too), I had been using an Acer P211 CRT for about 4 years; however, that had finally completely died (after 3 RMAs; they repaired my original twice and then sent me a refurb, though as a BenQ P211 version, the last time about 2 years before it died [and I had to pay the last time, including shipping]...and the color temp on that refurb was always too hot vs what it should have been...) about 2-3 months before I started the new job (and I had become unemployed in July and was just working barely part time for a couple months...I should have sold more stuff than I did but a lot of my stuff was a few hundred miles away at my parents...I was very much at near rock bottom...just will say I've not had a drink since Nov 12 '07, otherwise I'd likely not be here to type this, and going forward from then I owed one friend the world). So, I was stuck with a old, used 15" Compaq CRT from the late 90s that I found at a used shop that was near the store where I was working night stock. It was a junk monitor probably when it was new (definitely worse than Acer and even the cheap KDS 17" I had for a bit in 01-03...more like the AST and Packard Bell ones we had at home in the 90s with our family PCs) and had some terrible convergence. But, when those paychecks-bit more than twice as much as I'd ever made-started rolling in, along with getting caught up, I started buying some things to make me happy (I bought a 16:10 1920x1200 LCD to replace that , but it was a cheaper one from Sceptre and not an Asus). I may not always agree with how they treat paying customers at times nor do I think they always produce the best quality, but I'll always continue to buy their products because the co-workers (in the US, Taiwan, Malaysia, China, Jaurez MX, and elsewhere) were always supportive on a personal level. You may have wanted a completely happy, light story about the 3850, but there it is. I think UT3 was probably the only big game I bought (I got Company of Heroes with the card though, which I probably should have sold because it wasn't my kind of game) between getting the 3850 and then buying the 3870s, but it played those well enough. I was thinking that I might have bought Team Fortress 2, but it seems from my Steam purchase history that I didn't buy it until August '08. Well, I know I saw some nice framerate boosts in the other games I already owned and played like BF2142 and BF2, Oblivion, Guild Wars, CS Source, and the only important one really to me at the time: WoW. Yeah, there were a lot of CPU-bound situations in WoW (not just then, but today too), but the the HD3850 certainly helped at higher resolutions. Also, the game used to scale very well with multi-GPU (crossfire with better scaling though than SLI in my experience) at high resolutions when you were not in CPU-bound situations like raids and large-team PvP. The game still had crossfire and SLI support under DX11 up until they fully removed exclusive fullscreen mode last year. They tested explicit mutli-GPU support under DX12 a few years earlier, but I don't think it ever hit the live client, so it was said to see multi-GPU support finally go for the game at the launch of the latest expansion.

I would like to see comparison between software and hardware CF. If you have a free time please check a difference beteen them.

Thanks, glad you enjoyed. I love checking out multi-GPU setups, they're very fun to play with! And I can attest to that for sure, the Crossfire master cards are very hard to find these days. Originally I was gonna use an X1950 XTX Crossfire card for this video but it started having some issues in the middle of benchmarking, I was luckily able to find this card for very cheap not long after. It's been a while but I've tried the software Crossfire before, I wasn't very impressed. From what I remember there was little to no scaling depending on the game, I only tried like 3 or 4 games though so maybe its worth a retest. If the results are interesting I might publish them on my second channel or something.

I do have an X1950 Pro, X1650XT and 2600XT which i now use in my XP rig, its been nice to swap between them and iron out other system bottlenecks. AS a curiosity in synthetics i swapped my A64 3400+ and X1650XT for the 2600XT and A64 X2 4200+ on my 939 setup and everything doubled across the board, it didn't translate to games at all, just architectural improvements on the GPU side, so i'm looking towards an AM2+ board and the BC AM£ Semprons on K10 as when overclocked are the fastest single core you can get. For the Pre multicore era games i play at max with some QOL mods or visual improvements with my 5:4 monitor, i need as much punch from a single core as i can get and keep that 2600XT fed, crossfire would be entirely pointless..but if i did get a second card as a spare..i wouldn't mind seeing what games would pick up crossfire and potentially benefit me to keep them in there, the future is bright for my XP rig and its still a big upgrade from the Sempron 2800+ and FX5200 i struggled with, that PCs struggles brought me to get an Xbox and 360 as a stopgap until i could afford my own computer, but now its time to experience what i missed :)

I will say the X1900 is quite a different beast! Back in its day it would have been offering top-tier performance and it aged pretty well for a DX9 card as well! Certainly didn't fall off as bad as its 7000 series rival did...
