The donuts main weakness is that, as you stated before, in a straight up fight between capital ships, the donut will always lose because for what you are paying for, it has terrible firepower against anything larger than a frigate. The turbo lasers have horrible firing ark and takes a long time to reload, and the originally seemingly impressive on paper 35000 shield depletes rather quickly in actual combat. Something like the liberation or a dauntless class battle cruiser on the rebel side, or a few ISD on the imperial side, can destroy a donut with relative ease. The thing is just that most early rebellion ship lacks fire power, and the ones they do get is very few in number. However, later new republic war ships such as a nebula or a mc80b could shred up the donut so easily that it reduces it to essentially an overpriced carrier that eats up unnecessary amount of fleet cap.

Watched the livestream of this and it seems more like a starting setup thing than an overall balance concern. Black Sun have top-tier starting units available right from the start and you can liquidate a lot of your assets to quickly get a doom fleet (you can sort of do this with other factions, but their tech trees mean your early units will take unsustainable losses, a Lucrehulk on the other hand is pretty all-or-nothing, it's probably gonna' last). Over time they'll lose all that momentum as their economy grinds to a halt but by that point it might already be too late. What I'd like to see from them is more from a lore perspective than a balance one: - Clone Wars era ships should be unbuildable, you should start with a decent number of them and only get any extras from missions. - Clone Wars era ships should kinda' suck but have a series of expensive refits to actually make them competitive. So, as an example, Lucrehulks - all 3 should be on the field at the start, probably spread out. They should only have light turbolasers, point defence, a handful of crappy fighters, maybe a corvette or 2, medium armour and unimpressive shields. First refit gives them a decent fighter complement, second refit gives them proper armour and shields, third upgrade gives them proper guns - in total this should end up costing 2 or 3 times what the ship costs currently as well as making it a vulnerable asset that's hard to replace and forcing it to stay out of the action for a while as it gets upgrades.

Personally, I've found that the best and only real tactic to counter the black sun other than using hyper-specialised fleets that can only really counter one individual fleet at a time is to do the traditional Empire tactic of "Form a Battle-line of Capitals + support ships and charge while praying that your forces don't take particularly crippling losses". You can't stick at long range because too much of their fleet is artillery, you can't really use carriers + fighters both because of the range of that artillery and the sheer amount of PD their ships tend to have. However, the vast majority of their ships do not hold up too well in a prolonged engagement and the ones that do tend to lack the firepower of the other factions ships that can stand and fight. Even the Lucrehulk, for all it's many guns, isn't actually that powerful in a close range fight because those are anti-fighter guns and technically anti-light support ships.

The Black sun are bonkers. You start with the wheel, which prints credits. You jump right into bespin, which is un-guarded, gas giant 1, prints credits. Right next to ord Ibana, easy take, gas giant 2, prints credits. 2 jumps from Zar, takes some time, but gas giant 3, prints credits. No ground mines, but can place cantinas EVERYWHERE to print credits. Ground armies? Spam B1s. Dirt cheap, losses irrelevant, HUGE numbers overwhelm almost everything. Late game swap to B2s because you have so much money, they are still quite cheap but don't lag you as much. Saucer ships are like the best anti-fighter in the game, doom donuts have all the HP to tank for you while your many artillery ships fire away from the back. The only downside the Donut has as a super capital is that its weapons are long-range anti-medium/light ships, making it ill-suited for anti-capital work. ISD's can really give them a hard time. But they take so long to kill the rest of your fleet can solve the issue while the doom donut tanks. My current game I have multiple planets bleeding 1k+ credits and I don't care because I make so much money, and I basically just attack move at the base with B1s and win. In space doom donuts, pirate saucers, few arty ships, easy.

A thought on balancing the Black Sun: perhaps anything they can get from the Clone Wars needs to be acquired via a quest chain. It doesn't have to be amazingly difficult for anything that's not too powerful - the quest chain to get Venators would be much shorter than to get Lucrehulks. At first, the quests would give you one, maybe a couple, of the things you're seeking, as you find and acquire or salvage these ships that are no longer in production - and the final quest gets you the plans, to finally be able to build these ships yourself. I feel like it would both balance the Black Sun while being highly characterful - these Clone Wars ships aren't being produced anymore, and getting your hands on them shouldn't be as simple as commissioning a shipyard to work on it. You should be going to historic Clone Wars battle locations, finding derelicts that can be saved and refurbished, or bribing Outer Rim garrison units to 'lose' ships like the Venator for your use. - and eventually, whether by finding the original plans to getting enough experience repairing these ships to piece together assembly guidelines, or even just find a steady and stable source to buy them intact in your search for more, you eventually unlock the ability to build them normally. All that leaves is proper balancing of these quests, to regulate how fast they can be completed.

I think the trick with the Lucrehulk is that it's kind of the opposite of most ships in its weight class. Compare it to the Allegiance-Class Battlecruiser or Home One, those ships are designed to tear apart capital ships but usually have a weakness to lots of smaller craft. Meanwhile, the Lucrehulk is bristling with long-range light turbolasers and laser cannons, able to deliver significant damage from a mile away and shred anything smaller than a cruiser, but those weapons would struggle against heavy armor like you see on the ISD or Dauntless Cruisers. Like it says in the description, it's undergunned for its class, and while it may be able to perform well against one, maybe two capital ships at a time, that's mostly due to the health advantage that comes from its sheer size, I believe its actual armament is comparable to something like an ISD, just longer ranged. This is not to say these ships and the Black Sun as a whole don't need some more fine-tuning, I've struggled with fighting the Black Sun in my own Rebel campaign far more than the Empire, but it's certainly possible to beat them back and gradually root them out.

So heres the thing about Space Donuts: Their weaponry is just ass for its size, nothing but Light turbos mean it can barely scratch cap ship hulls. It however deletes any fighter craft that gets close, so you have to either whale on its shields forever, or you need to use torpedo boats. Bombers will just get themselves killed. More so than the Rebels ironically, Black Sun forces you to mix up your fighters, because all of them are terrible on their own. But using a combination of them all together and they can do good work. Donuts were much stronger in 2.8 because they had turbos with much higher damage. Now as for why the rebels always lose, its more to do with their shit starting positions: They have a huge swathe of planets to start with that are pretty hard to get any use out of in terms of income or industry. In particular, the North East section of the map, a lot of those planets are hard to defend and produce little. So when the "Minor" factions wake up they often just slam into those weakly defended planets and steamroll. Even in a game with the BS disabled I often find myself in battle with the minor factions than I do the Rebellion.

Sorry Shack, I cannot disagree with you more about the Mandalorians. My view is that Filoni has whitewashed the Mandos to sell more merch, and make sure the Imperials are the only villains in the galaxy. Sure, individual Mandos can be any kind of people, but at their core they are mercenaries and bounty hunters; they don't fight for an agenda of peace and harmony, they fight because they like fighting. The age when the Mandalorians were a galactic power is long gone, and the Mandalorians themselves have receded much since then; they have changed tack. VVV As for changes that will be made to Black Sun, I think President said it well in his post. They plan on integrating progression into Black Sun, but it won't be a system like what the Rebels and Empire have, where you just spend a lot of money to get new tech. There are other systems which also may be implemented that can alter the balance. VVV Finally, you do point out that there is a Rebels vs Empire campaign, but when you are playing a 1v1v1 scenario, you can't expect one of the sides to sit around and do nothing because you *want* them to have less involvement, or expect them to be weaker. If you just attack one side for weeks on end, the other side will take advantage of that opportunity. Maybe there can be another scenario where the Black Sun has fewer starting planets, but the question is how to keep them from being squashed early on. Although I hear the devs are going to try for something along those lines.

With The Black Sun being the 3rd rate faction in AOTR for a while, I can see how Pres and The Devs wanted to amp them up and make them equal to both The Rebels and Empire. The issue here is that what Captain Shack just showed us, The Black Sun gets beefy ships almost right away and are in a great strategic position do take full advantage of said ships. The A.I. for The Empire is mainly to take out The Rebels while not worrying much about The Black Sun, so when The Black Sun attacks with the ships they have, The Empire gets wrecked. I like The Black Sun being challenging and The Donuts are a great challenge to fight but the most effective ships against The Angry Donuts of Doom are ships that have long range capabilities or like Shack pointed out, a fleet of ISD's. A couple MC80A's, Barracudas, and a lot of fighters can be effective against 1 of The Angry Donuts of Doom. Suggestions. Keep The Angry Donuts of Doom at the same power level but make it so The Black Sun gets the later in the game, while providing another Capital ship for The Black Sun to use that is equal and unique in its own way to Rebel and Imperial ships. Later on when The Angry Donuts of Doom are made, The Rebels and Empire will have ships that stand a chance as well as theoretically being well established economically as well as financially. As it stands now The Empire and Rebels are dealing with Freight Trains of Fuckery when it comes to The Black Sun's Angry Donuts of Doom.

some ideas for balancing the black sun: 1. split what the faction owns at the start up between the Black Sun and the base game Zann Consortium as well as make the Hutts an active faction. All three can corrupt a planet but they'd be fighting each others corruption as well meaning that Rebels and Empire don't have to waste as much fighting corruption themselves. 2. Have mandalore start as a neutral fortress world with a couple of their heaviest ships and downgrade the Mandalorian warships that the mercenaries have access to down from battleships (which should still be incredibly rare at this point outside of the Empire) and have them using those mandalorian Crusader corvettes instead. Still incredibly good ships for their class but they aint battleships. 3. If not making the Hutts an active 'player' then at least give them Tatooine (hell even if they are still give them Tatooine). At this point in the timeline, and for quite a while both before and after, Tatooine was controlled by Jabba so it really shouldn't be under the Black Sun. With the Hutts controlling it even if you do control Geonosis and build those Lucrehulks early in order to make use of them you'd need to set off the Hutts which would create all sorts of issues especially considering the Hutts (should, don't know if they do in the mod yet) have their own battleships hidden somewhere in their space. 4. Make Geonosis a neutral planet to begin with. Considering the Empire genocided the world with bioweapons there should be no one even on-world. That might make it a bit too easy to take still for balancing purposes so instead have a droid rebellion in progress being pumped out by the factories that were left unmanned. A number of defence stations that are able to pump out droid starfighters, a couple patchworked Lucrehulks (Empire destroyed their hyperdrive but didn't bother fully scrapping them) and droid starfighters out the wazoo, and that is just for space. On the ground their should be dozens of B1 and B2 platoons and a dozen or so other droid vehicles with factories pumping out more as the battle progresses. Make it so that if the Black Sun (or whichever faction wants Geonosis) has to commit a major assault to take the world and it WILL cost them. Hell considering what is on the planet maybe even allow the defending droids to call in bombing runs considering there are probably hundreds of hidden hangars across the world they could have been deployed from.

It is *much* worse in vanilla: they had the ability to remotely destroy structures on any corrupted planet. Mass drivers work differently, here in this mod repeating MDs have a good range and high DPS when firing but otherwise have a long cool down and aren't that accurate at long range. While the single shot version is best against large ships. In vanilla MDs are both: long range, decent rate of fire, perfectly accurate, their damage is more consistent.

The way to fix the Black sun economy is to find the planets with Racketeering and piracy. Set those up early and replace them as they are taken out. The racketeering seems harsh cost wise but you get 50% of the initial cost back when racketeering is established. Getting all the spots usually nets me around 8-10k by a few weeks.

It never made sense to me to use Lucrehulks for the Black Sun unless you take at least five planets near Neomoidia. The Black Sun never used Lucrehulks (mostly because the ship didn't exist when authors were designing them), but even if they did, they'd rely on them as mobile bases like they did with most larger vessels since their strength was in speed and anonymity. Generally they'd use regional ships to whichever planets they controlled (Faleen especially since the Vigos were primarily from that planet) instead of scrapping old war tech like some sort of scavenger race. The Black Sun tends to be used to throw in nontraditional lineups for players who wanted to use other era ships, but in lore they're far more like a cartel with their own brand and specific selection of spacecraft (Like cloakshapes and starvipers) which are weak in single combat so that it makes sense for their strength to be in corruption instead.

Personaly I have always felt that the Lukerhulk has to mauch health, it should have its insaine Firepower but about 1/2 the health making it a hard hitting glass cannon like it is in legends comminc and the RPG. you could easly Make 2 levels of ship out of it, as the Lukerhulk is actualy made of 2 ships. a comand Ship in the midel and a masive Gun/Fighter carrier wrapped around it.

They either need more tech levels/missions before being able to get Lukrehulks or a global cap allowed in a fleet at once. Also does the AI get everything from the start? The empire tried building the Excectutor real early in Shacks campaign.

Literally just like every faction the sun have their weaknesses. On paper their units are horrid in many different ways. Their fighters suck in comparison to rebel fighters and their capital ships are horrid vs imperial ships But the problem is nobody bothers to truly fight them in the correct fashion and actually use more strategy. AOTR time and again has proven to be more complex in combat than the standard EAW mod where you can just smash fleets against fleets with little regard The sun have weaknesses. Plenty of them but you actually have to put the effort in and try to find them

I almost got steamrolled by the Black Sun as the rebels too, but, what I did was, kind of cheating, after fighting a big battle, after lossing all my fleet to their 3 donuts, leaving me with just a few corbets and an ION cannion, I just circled around the map running away from the donuts while my ION Cannion slowly melted them (now they deal damage when they have no shields, at least enought to destroy 1 small arquintance cruiser in a single salvo), IT TOOK HOURS! But was enought to save my campaign. Later they came back with other 3 donuts and a lot of venators.

all you need for the black sun is 3 Corellian Destroyer, 1 Duro Mercenary, 2 Venator Refit and 4 Corona Frigates. Battle won. Every now and then you'll have to fly in a replacement if the ai has a massive fleet but for the most part that setup will win you most battles

If it’s possible maybe the can have it so they can only train certain units if they have a specific number of planets corrupted. That way there is an extra incentive in removing corruption as the Rebellion and Empire as you’d be able to cripple the Black Sun and prevent them from sneaking fleets through you.

To be fair a few updates ago the space defence of the black sun was insane I had no trouble killing like 1 or 2 Mc 80s or isd1s including Escort so now they are tamer in defense. Personally I like the black sun due to The fact that they have different looking ships than either organicish or glorified flying triangles

My interpretation of Black Suns balance is supposed to be their ships are really bad compared to the other factions late game ships, problem is it seems like the enemy factions don't get to make it that far. I personally want Black Sun to be more like the other factions, have space techs, but also to have better late game ships as well.

What if, since all their ships are old and used, instead of a technology tree for the black sun they invest in diplomatic relations with different groups who give them access to these starships? (Where the "Negotiations" take the same amount of time as building a tech station and the monetary cost is your "Down payment" for access to the ships.)

Make blacksun systems rebel either randomly or through the mission system...ie, warlords randomly bribing a fleet to force a ~equal fight for the system if you fail turn it over as a pirate faction or rebel/imp.

Glazed, glassed, same thing really Edit: On a more serious note, I honestly just "balance" it myself, I up the cost of lucrehulks, I increase the empire's income by giving coruscant a buff. Which yeah, it's kinda cheaty, since if you get Coruscant yourself you'll be swimming in credits, but by that point I'm either unstoppable anyway or I just end the campaign. Been tweaking the mod in small ways for a few years, and well, it works for me, when playing as the rebels, the empire feels stronger, the black sun is a threat, but not as much as the empire (as I feel it should be), I rarely see lucrehulks stacked, the empire gets more assets, so yeah, I kinda switched them up, but I'm more okay with the empire kicking my ass than the black sun, you know, they're the fucking empire, and even if they're stronger, they're not unbeatable, unlike the doughnuts

I would like if the Rebels got some kind of big tough too... something that can tank very hard. I had thought a Bulwark would be thematic. But not sure if they have the option. Maybe just let us build up to 3 Independence cruisers... Right now as Rebels its not impossible to win big fights against super cap ships. Its more that doing so requires resources that are very rare and expensive and easy to lose.

There should be mandalorian units for each faction. During the galactic civil war mandalorian society is divided. The the planet of Mandalore is ruled by the empire, at the same time meny mandalorians seek the independence of Mandalore and have allied themselves with the rebellion. Others have been involved in the criminal underworld long before the empire.

You should play so aggressively for the rebels - you will understand that it is not so difficult. Akbar, by the way, can be obtained in 8-10 weeks in the expert mode, and he is much better than lucrehalk. by the way, rebels have so many op free heroes: Ackbar, Snunb, Rebel one, Liberation, Luke and others

I think part of the problem with black sun is that they are being designed as a major military power, when quite simply that wasn't what they were. they should only have a handful of capital ships and otherwise be focused on corvettes, frigates, and freighters, essentially the ships of smugglers and pirate lords. Meanwhile their ground forces should be (outside of weaker garrison forces) based around raiding and heroes. they should assemble a crack team of operatives to pull off a job. they simply didn't have the forces for massive ground invasions of a planet. maybe instead they should focus on more units like the black sun operative? but all and all they should be more raid centered than the rebellion, as by the time of episode five, the rebels had a ground army, the black sun did not.

This is my favorite mod, but yeah the Suns need to be rebalanced, I really like the idea of giving them a tech tree, that alone would do wonders.
