I use front loaded and folded horns. I've always been told not to do that, but I saw it done at a concert for Lauren Hill and loved the bass when I moved around the arena. I keep the front loaded 18's side by side near my table and use the horns on the sides with the tops. works good for large spaces. Keep up the good work.

They are holding up great. I just used them this past Friday (see my gig log) and I cranked them very hard. The only thing that makes it hard to take these subs around is that they are around 180 pounds each & most of the time take 2 people to load up and unload but for the sound they put out it is worth it.

LOL thanks!! From what I've seen and read, most outdoor gigs if they are big will use folded horns or front firing subs but they always stack them for more db. I haven't herd any scoops myself on outdoor gigs but my friend has a few and they do hit hard when we used them indoors. If it were me I would use folded horns for outdoor gigs.

If you think those are good, they are some of the most basic design short path length ones and still hitting hard. Wait till you hear a long path length with a smaller driver. My favourite sites for horn plans are Bill Fitzmaurice and John Inlow (builds a complicated looking bass horn)
@deejaybustab
11 жыл бұрын
Yup I know about that site. I even paid for the plans but after thinking about it I let strictlyhookups build the boxes that are just like the Cerwin Vegas. I just didn't have the time to build everything and I never built a complex box like that.

Ive been using horn loaded sub's for years and have experimented with all kind of positions. Keep the exit throat on the floor (vertical or horizontal) never on a stage etc- it needs to directly couple for best result. For good results side stack into groups with horns apart (creating a W). 'Horn loaded' has been successful for several companies: EAW (Avalon series (do a dual 12!)), Turbosound & Funktion one (The old Turbo engineers). Just watch out for a resonant peak @ ~160hz with 18's.

Hilarious clip... I've been enjoying your channel very much! I want to build a system to play old school dub outdoors - are folded horns the way to go? I've read that scoops lose power around the 60-100 khz range, whereas folded don't.

I was not going to get the SA sub but after talking to the tech support and they said people have used them in the cerwin vegas and it worked great I took a chance because you get 30 day money back if you are not satisfied. I am satisfied with them.

How long can it go? Well the longest I have ran this amp on two 18s in bridge mode was 6 hours non stop. Amp was barely warm.
@TimpBizkit

You're usually better off with smaller drivers (12") in a longer horn if you want to go low. Subwoofers like the Lab Sub, Tuba 60 and KF940 use 2 12s. Horns turn a small amount 'high pressure' air into a large amount of 'low pressure' air. The size of the mouth and compression determine how much air can be moved, and so improve the sensitivity down low.
@DJGLTD

Hey, could you do a better test? outdoors maybe, I'm looking into building some. just want to make sure that at louder volumes they work better, would be nice to see how well they work at distance, up close and stuff like that.

Yeah I was shocked when the bass hit that hard. It was scary because I only had the amp at 1/4 and I didn't turn it up past 1/2 because of how hard everything in the house was vibrating. Wish I could prove it to you guys but the camera just doesn't let you hear how hard it hits.

That's only if you turn the music up very loud. The same goes for any kind of sub or top speakers. If it's too loud, it's not good sounding music. You have to know music clarity, decibels, EQ adjustments and proper sound levels for it to sound nice and clear.
@deejaybustab
11 жыл бұрын
That may be an option but I don't know of any PA speakers with insulation inside of them like you would find in home speakers or car subwoofer boxes. Wonder why just about all PA speaker manufacturers don't use insulation? I think that is a good question.

Thanks for the advice. Think I'll try building a pair of the ones you got using the plans on Strictly Hookups... they're more detailed than the ones I have seen on the UK site (but very similar) ... So far after using both types for almost 1 year now..I find out that the front firing have more Boomy chest pounding Bass at close range but the folded horns bass is not as "Boomy" but is much louder sounding and tends to travel much farther in big rooms. I'm going to keep both types of subs so I have the choice to use either type on different size gigs.

Hi Deejaybustab, i want to ask you about folded horns that you have,are they any good? do they hit low? how they preforme outside? and is it wearth to build these large cabbinets? Im asking, because im planning to do a project with these folded horns, BUT with a little bigger scale (i want to use 21'' drivers), so as everyone i want to know every single detail about these folded horns :) Maybie you could make a video about this, if you have some spare time? :) Thanks for your time :)

It would be wise to put a bit of insulation in the sealed chamber of the woofer...Like fiberglass or polyfil. This will help tighten up the bass by reducing standing waves behind the cone that cause harmonic distortions Offering cleaner tighter bass.

I was thinking of getting a system with 4x21" (900 watt RMS each) and four sets of 3-way top speakers (18", 10", tweeter, about 500-ish watt rms per set), but I think this test makes me realize four sets of 3-ways might be loud enough for my home XD

Why is your sonic maximizer after the crossover?That is supposed to be used as an enhancer for the entire system, it should be before the crossover so that you can reap the benefits on the entire system.

Yeah, folded horns are some sick ass dumps. The only thing I've seen that works better is based on your boy's "afterburner" deign and involves 18" monsters. When tuned properly to be perfectly in phase, those things will (to use a black term) snatch you balled headed if you get too close. Having been raised by a black woman whom I lovingly call Mama Bee I do know a thing or two. I built a similar design to those though, and they sounded a lot bigger than the looked...and they were huge...

You need a better mic for this purpose which can withstand the high sound pressure levels. Too much crackling to appreciate the subwoofers.Cross your subs over at 80 or lower, and they will sound even better. If you are going to bring those to a big gig instead of your double 18s make sure thattyou use them in pairs and/or lay them down on their sides, they will hit harder when they couple with the floor .
