I bouight one of these radios way back in the late 1980's when it was a new model.I have used it very little over the years and have just powered it up for the first time in 10 years - it works faultlessly which is a tribute to Sony's quality of manufacture.I have the original box ,all accessories etc in mint condition.

"Try Again!" Haha! That radio has really good shortwave reception. Usually the higher bands are used during the daytime and the lower bands are used at night, but the really high (13m) and really low (75m) bands are mostly only used in Asia, Africa, and other areas where people might not have any local AM and FM stations in their area, so they listen to shortwave more.

Great little radio. I picked up a used one at my local Salvos store in Australia for just 6 bucks. It's been used a lot showing signs of wear, but still gives me a clear crisp sound.

The "weird beep tones" are a world wide system known as NDB (Non Directional Beacons), These transmit CW (Morse Code) as a beacon so aircraft can navigate to a specific airport. The CW is CEL a military airport "flugplatz" located near Celle, Germany. Logging NDBs is a popular pastime for many radio listeners! BTW I have the ICF-2003 version of this radio. tschüs!

@Lachlant1984 The clock was not working because I didn't had the backup batteries installed. There is no AM/PM time system in Germany, so the clock is the 24h system.

Hi gendy943, I bought one in 1983 and it has been used pretty much continuously (on mains power) since then. I also took it with me on some trips to Europe and Tahiti. Yesterday it finally stopped working - the radio part simply won't turn on again. Checked mains unit and battery option, but no luck. If you're not using yours, would you consider selling it to me? I live in New Zealand. I always loved using that radio and it will be missed.

Looks like the fine tuning was off by like +5 kHz here. ;) These are pretty decent little sets not too far from what's out in terms of shortwave portables today (even if entirely mono and with only so-so SSB), and they actually hold up better than the next model which used crappy early surface mount electrolytics (pity since I like it a lot on AM). The FM section is one of the better in the series. Paired with a tuned shortwave loop, this would make a pretty capable receiving setup.

76-90 MHz is the Japanese radio fm broadcast band where Australia and most western countries operate in TV VHF band II which is between 87.5 to 108Mhz, so the radio can work in any country.
@DrCassette

Somewhere around 76 MHz is where the radio communication systems of the police operated. It is illegal to receive police communication, so this receiver here in Germany was sold at a massive discount and packaged with a big note saying that using the radio in Germany is illegal :D

That's a really nice radio, especially for its age :) The Morse transmission you heard on longwave is an NDB. It's probably an aeronautical beacon on an airfield - these were used for aeroplane navigation before GPS was developed. Some Oil rigs also transmit NDBs. The 9/10KHz switch is to change the tuning step/spacing on MW - USA and others use 10KHz, while Europe of course uses 9. As you probably already know, the FM dial begins at 76MHz in Japan, so your radio could be used there too.

I should see if I can get something like this on eBay. How come the little clock display at the top of the radio wasn't working? I think that standby button next to the power on button is for setting an alarm to wake you up. I'm guessing the clock is in 24 hour millitary time, correct? I like this radio, it's clearly quite something.

My problem is when i turn it on my Fm is set to the 1st staion I prgrammed and I can select the 10 pre sets on the fm. But whn i want AM it won,t go to the AM band directly unless i add the freq no of the am station.Thats a bother. Am I doing something wrong?

@@normanbloom did you fix it? I know these are good but this and the later models seem to suffer numerous electronic issues one thing or another some still work well bit of a lottery I have just bought the model after this needs an aerial and it sleeps after 30 mins can't turn sleep off I think there are more repair videos on KZitem of these than anything else.

My radio says "goodbye" instead of "try again", LoL! Kidding aside, I got a 7600D which doesn't work anymore. Web forums suggest to replace many bad electrolytic capacitors as this radio is susceptible to capacitor leakage. Mine is just good as a paper weight. I had Radio Shack DX390 receiver as a replacement

It very much depends on what frequency band you are trying to receive, what time you are receiving at, what the atmospheric conditions are at that time and so on. Under ideal conditions you can receive stations from all around the world.

Hey, I have the same radio, just got it from my Grandfather. I am scanning stations right now on shortwave, and the radio's automatic scan is PAINFULLY SLOW, goes 5 kHz /second pretty much... I am wondering if there is a way I can adjust the scan rate, so taht it won't take me 10 minutes to scan one of the sw bands. Thanks!
