The fgc would probably call this a piano motion, often used to mash multiple button presses to help hit tight timing with several rapid inputs. It's beautiful to see analogous evolution of controller tech

I still don’t get it, surely it’s just easy to simply make the inputs directly using thumbs? Obviously you are right and know best but i just can’t get my head around this 😅

Basically this just allows him to mash faster than if he just mashed normally because he's essentially using 4 fingers to press instead of just his thumb.

There is another method called Hypertapping, basically mashing buttons as fast as you can, this is an effective way to play high level Tetris until someone named Cheez invented another method called Rolling like you see in the video

Left and right buttons should be opposite if the controller is upside down.

Some players use "Goofy Foot" controllers which are rewired to switch the directions around, making upside-down the new normal. Some other players use unmodified controllers upside-down and just learn to get used to the directions being reversed. (Left-hand roll is also an option, but it seems like right-hand roll is more common.)

@@KitaruTC i wanna try left hand rolling. especially considering I'm left handed

@@y-tiplex Yep, if you feel like your left-hand fingers are more dexterous, it definitely seems worth a shot. I feel like it's easier to anchor the NES2 "dogbone" controller than the NES1 rectangle -- there's more natural room to put your right-hand fingers without flipping the controller upside-down. Another option for left-hand roll that I think looks interesting is Jerpi's grip; she just holds a rectangle controller normally (like DAS or Thor grip) and rolls her fingers into the bottom-left back corner. For a 5 tap, I think she just ends with the thumb directly on the d-pad.

@@KitaruTC I think rolling with my left hand would definitely be easier cause I'm not the most coordinated and I remember as kid seeing my sister roll her fingers along her desk and I wanted to be able to do that too so I actually had to teach myself and practice rolling the fingers on my left hand.

you roll your fingers on the back of your controller to push it into your thumb, it's like 4 fingers press the button instead of just one so it's much faster than just pressing it normally
