Yes, I am sure. As we do not have those here, everyone in Texas thinks any snake that is brown and on land is a copperhead. Every snake in water is believed to be a cottonmouth. This is simply ignorance based off of fear and upbringing. I try my best to rid people of that fear and educate them about native snakes. Thanks for watching

My retirement advisor has been bitten twice by copperheads. The 2nd time the snake was in the hedge she was trimming so not the snake's fault after getting whacked by hedge clippers, but I'm still shooting any venomous snake I see. Non venomous - you're free to go.

We are from southeastern WI and late this summer my boyfriend found which looks very similar to the TX Brown Snake at one of his work sites. It was about 7 or 8 inches when we found him/her. We kept it, and it has grown to a bit more than 12 inches already. I hated snakes, but have absolutely fallen in love with this lil guy!!! We named it Monte and he or she couldn't be sweeter!

Thank you very much Orry! I walked outside this morning to find a cute little brown snake stretched out on my sidewalk. Wanted to pick him up and take a few photos, but he was so good at his bluff (flattened, triangular looking head and kept coiling and striking at the the grass and my phone) that I did not pick him up. I knew he wasn't a copperhead (what beauties they are!) but wasn't sure he wasn't a baby rattler. Now I know--It's the 3rd kind of snake we've seen around our house. We've also had lots of rough earth snakes and used to have a large bullsnake (until an ignorant neighbor killed it thinking she was being heroic...sigh).

@TripAAAHerping I wish I had a good cottonmouth spot. I will find one come spring though. I mostly catch Louisiana Milk Snakes, Texas Rat snakes, Copperheads, Western Dback rattlers, Blacktails, Mojaves, Gophers, and water snakes. My goal this year is to catch another mottled rock rattler, a massasauga, find a good cottonmouth, canebrake, and pygmy rattler spot. Big wishes, but I am going to do it no matter what. Thanks for the good luck wishes and best to you.

what is a quick way to distinguish a venomous from non-venomous snake in Texas? (preferably from a distance)
@danatcanyonlake583
5 жыл бұрын
Shape of the head and pupil shape. Venomous will have somewhat large, triangular head (except coral snake and they are the least aggressive of the venomous snakes). Vertical pupil slits indicate a venomous snake, but you have to get close to see them. Use the internet. Clint, the snake guy has good stuff as well as this guy.

What about a water moccasin? I’m in NE Texas and I saw a brown snake around where my air conditioner drips today, I did not see its head, but it’s a very wet area? It looked about 8 or 9 inches long and it just went right by my foot, where I have a 5 gallon bucket to catch the water that drips from my Air Conditioner, it went behind the bucket and out of site, I don’t know if it went under my house or under the bucket, my dog ( a pug) didn’t even try to touch it,, and he eats worms or anything eles, but did not even attempt, I told him to back up and he did, and he never minds me but he did with the snake, and he is the reason I saw the snake I think he follows it to the bucket, I just don’t know what kind it was I have a 13 yr old son, it just worried me, let me know about water moccasin,, PLEASE

Most of the time they still want it gone so I relocate it to a safer pace from people and where there is food and water for them. It's important that you let your viewers know that copperheads are venomous, especially if you're going to handle them so casually in your video. Also, I was unaware that brown DeKays snakes bluff strike. Is it only the Texas variety that does so, or is it common among all brown DeKays? I see your videos are a decade or more old. I hope you're doing well.

I just rescued two guys from a little baby brown worm looking snake that was in the bathroom this morning. (It’s an old house, the lil guy was probably cold and found his way in somehow) The guys were yelling and trying to grab trash bags, walking away from the bathroom, freaking out... it was so funny. I picked him up and took him outside. Anyway, I came here looking for exactly what the little guy was called. We call them worm snakes in Tennessee/Mississippi but worm snakes in Texas look different, colored bellies? Idk what the plain brown one is, still funny though. Haha
