Back in the day these opening tv theme songs and credits were almost as important and entertaining as the show itself.. Great video

"Texas" was a wonderful show that never got a fair shot. When it premiered in 1980, some TV reviewer in TV Guide called it "the worst TV show...ever!" It also didn't help that NBC decided to air it at 3:00 PM, opposite both ABC's "General Hospital" and CBS's "Guiding Light" which were both power houses competing to be #1 in the ratings. "Another World," the sister show that "Texas" was spun off from, was on the downslide at the time, and did not provide enough carry-over audience to help "Texas" build its own following. Over its two-year existence, it has some of the most talented actors and actresses around, including Beverlee McKinsey, Sharon Acker, Donald May, Burt Kramer, Jerry Lanning, Carla Borelli, and Daniel Davis. It had story line problems at first, and when Beverlee McKinsey jumped ship, it was a huge blow. The best thing that Procter and gamble (the show's owner) did was putting actress Pamela Long Hammer in as head writer. She had the show on the right track by the summer of 1982. But NBC had lost faith, and the show was finished by the end of December 1982.

And then headwriter Pamela Long Hammer and executive producer Gail Kobe moved pretty much directly over to Guiding Light, where they rejuvenated that show 1983-1986 and created some of the most memorable storylines and characters in its illustrious history.

Besides Dana Kimmell stared in the TV soap opera and she did go on to star in other things. Besides network executives are jerks in the business and it is all about the rating system.

I really like the first theme to "Texas". I also saw Caryn Richman as one of the cast members. I remember her as Gidget on "The New Gidget" back in 1984. They should have never changed the theme to this show.

@@sambozoo You and I both! I was about 5 years old when I watched this soap. I used to carry around a piece of obsidian and pretend that it was the "Fire Compass." I always remember the scene where they're in the helicopter flying over the mountain, and the woman yells out "Look there's Gretchen!"

Yeah after Texas went off the air in 1982, it was rerun in '83 on WTBS in 30 minute segments instead of an hour. It aired in the morning right before The Catlins.

P.S. I've since found the answer . . . this CG typeface was from a company called Vidifont, derived from a font called 'CBS News 36' (no surprise, Vidifont started out as a unit of CBS Labs). This font - only two sizes, big U&LC and small caps-only - was most ubiquitous at many TV stations from c.1970 well into the early 1980's.

I just loved Beverlee McKinsey. She was such a dynamic actress. I really miss her presence on screen today, but she sure left a great legacy. It was so awesome that they gave her star billing. She so deserved it. In addition, the theme music was really powerful and can easily be recognized just by hearing it. I wish I were able to see the Texas episodes again, and hope one day that happens..

TEXAS was different from other soaps. They gave a cast member from another soap top star billing, and showed beauty shots of the entire cast with the roles they played. I was just a few months from being born, but I love what I see. TEXAS had some fine ladies, the young ones especially. Catherine Hickland stands out the most. Sexy without being sexy, and didn't need much to be beautiful. If I'd been a teen or 20-something in 1980, I'd be madly in love with Catherine Hickland.

Then it’s a half hour of spinning and solving on Wheel of Fortune. After that, someone will play the Triple Crown for $10,000 on Hit Man, followed by Just Men! with Betty White. Now, stay tuned for The Doctors, next.

@@RJSchex - Found all that out online since that query was posed. One wonders why there hasn't been a computerized version of the typeface on which that Vidifont was based - CBS News 36 - as yet. (They have, after all, digitized Group W's font, as well as Westinghouse Electric's.)
