My first coaster ever. Scared me to death, but I'm glad I tried it when I did, and glad someone was able to video the original.

This is very cool. I didn't realize you started filming coasters that early. This was back before homemade POV's were a "thing." :) KZitem wouldn't even become available for another 10 or 11 years. Hell, this was before the internet!

Makes me miss Mean Streak, still my fourth fav at Cedar Point! It's a shame these two gigantic woodies were left to rot pretty much, I would love to see a modern company like gravity group take on a ride like this!

I liked Mean Streak its opening year, after that I didn't care for it. Rode it usually once a year to see how it was running. That's not to say I didn't like it back in the day though. I always though of Mean Streak as the tamer version of Texas Giant, but it didn't age as gracefully. Not sure if GG would tackle on something like this nowadays. If they did, it would most likely be epic!

I used to LOVE this ride! Granted, I only got to ride it after a couple days of pouring rain, and during light rain ERT at a Con in Texas back in the early-mid 2000’s. I absolutely loved the “magic carpet ride” ending every time. Then rode the OzCat not too long after that, and it had that same “magic” ending!

Awesome retro POV of the old Texas Giant! It's too bad the original coaster's glory ended a little too soon when it deteriorated quickly and became rough after running well for its first several years.

When this coaster really started to become rough, I do believe it was one of the first signs that the larger wooden coasters would be an issue. Texas Giant and Hercules were among the first wooden coasters I remember being tamed down significantly along with Mean Streak.

Back when I recorded this POV, Texas Giant was running incredibly well. The strange double-up was still there and the ride was packed with thrills. I went back in 1998 and thought it was still running great. However, I rode it a few months before it closed and it was unbearable. I believe the park just gave up on it and truly needed something better, which I believe they got.

@@SeanFlaharty The park basically stopped maintaining it after 1999. It got a bunch of work done that year (the first two hills were totally rebuilt), and there was a huge planned maintenance project in 2001 that got cancelled because someone decided it wouldn't be worth the money. It's unfortunate, because when it was running well, it really was one of the best wooden coasters ever built.

@@cynicanal111 I fully agree. I had this as my number one wooden coaster. However, that was over twenty years ago when I used to rate things. Had I still be rating when I took my final ride on Texas Giant, I would have probably put it very low on the list. It was terrible.

@@SeanFlaharty It's funny, so many younger rollercoaster KZitemrs are always like "lol Dinn sucks", and my first thought is "Dinn had some really great coasters!"... but then I stop and think for a second and realize "wait, literally all of them have run terribly for the last 20 years, and this KZitemr is too young to have experienced them when they were being taken care of." Most of them getting bad track beatings from day 1 because they opened during the years when PTC were pushing their terribly-designed trailered trains didn't help.

@@cynicanal111 That's what kind of makes me sad. I doubt we will ever see the day of "classic" feeling wooden coasters returning. The Gravity Group and GCI create some incredible rides, but they don't feel like the wooden coasters I grew up with. That can be both good and bad. Things are a lot more controlled nowadays, and I don't mean for safety reasons.

This was my favorite wooden coaster in 1995 when I first rode it. After that it wasn't the same. It became rougher in my opinion. The last time I rode it was a few months before it closed and it was unbearable. I am glad RMC made a new ride but am curious to know what it would have been like had it been fixed up but having someone else do it.

The Giant was 1000x better back in the day. People bitch "it's too rough" or "it's not comfortable". That's the fun! It felt rickety, it felt like it was going to collapse, it felt like a runaway train, it made you believe you were really in danger and that's what made it one of the greatest coasters ever. A smooth riding RMC Giant, is just a sad reminder of what once was! A generation of PC pussies who wear helmets while riding their bike and never once ride in the back of a pickup truck! LOL
@SeanFlaharty

@@CoolIHandIMatt While I used to absolutely love the old Giant (it was my favorite wooden coaster for many years), it had become so incredibly rough that it simply wasn't fun anymore, at least for me. I have no real problem with rougher rides as long as I don't leave the ride with a massive headache....which is exactly what happened soon before it closed. It actually kind of ruined the rest of my day at the park if I am being honest. I truly believe there is something called a "good rough." The old Giant used to be that good rough. My last rides on it were on the "very bad rough" side. I was quite shocked. While I do believe the new Giant is far superior to the "very bad rough" version of the Giant, I don't think its as good as the Giant I loved before it went to hell. I would much rather have the RMC version than not have any ride at all. You have to look at it from the park's perspective also. There is a saying in the industry that "You never stop building a wooden coaster", which is completely true. The park was spending millions on trying to improve the original coaster and it was clearly becoming quite the hassle for them. Having a modified version that was built so maintenance is much, much lower, and being able to market a newer version of the ride was a no-brainer in my opinion. The purists will laugh at all the RMC conversions but I truly love every single RMC I have ridden. I understand the frustrations of those that don't like the conversions, but from the park perspective it really can make a huge difference.
