𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗗𝘂𝗱𝗲𝘀:
The Four Dudes were from San Antonio, TX.
Originally "the Three Dudes," they started in 1967 at Sam Houston High School.
The group was led by Charles Russell, Reginald Whitaker, Lawrence Alexander, and they later added Kenneth Ball to become "the Four Dudes."
Their first single, "Sad Little Boy," was recorded on Ej Henke's "Satin" label and the flip being "I'm Begging You." San Antonio's legendary funk outfit, "Mickey & the Soul Generation," was behind both tracks.
In 1969, the group moved to Houston to be managed and produced by James Davis. Their second single, "My Heart is Broken" and "Hurt Took the High Road," was written by Charles Russell, who sang lead on both. The group was backed by Houston's own "the Heavy Accents."
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗿𝘀
The Justifiers were formed at St. Phillips College in 1962 by Archie Satterfield, Melvin Porter, Roger Blackwell, and songwriter Bennie Cherry.
The Justifiers recorded one single in with a producer looking for a local talent named Donn Fischer. The Justifiers released their single "My Love Has Gone" and "Lonely Boy" on Fischer's "Kim" label in the spring of 1968. The Kim label included the tag line, "the Sound of the Alamo."
In 1984, Bennie and Archie were approached by the legendary "Flamingos" to join them. Bennie and Archie toured worldwide, performing shows with the Flamingos - including a show for the Queen of England and a trip to the Grammys.
Bennie and Archie are alive today, still performing with a Touch of Silk in Las Vegas.
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀
The Commands formed in San Antonio, TX, in 1964 when they were stationed at Randolph Air Force Base during their military years.
The group consisted of lead singer Dan Henderson, Sam Peoples, Emmanuel Grace, and Spanish Harlem-born Puerto Rican Jack Martinez.
The Commands recorded a handful of singles for Dynamic, including "Hey It's Love" and their hit, "No Time For you," originally written by Justifiers frontman Bennie Cherry. 'No Time For You" swarmed the San Antonio airwaves of KTSA, KUKA, KBAT, and KONO and eventually gained national attention.
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗩𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗲𝘀
The Volumes were formed by Robert Williams & Vernon Shannon on the Eastside of San Antonio while the two were attending Poe Middle school.
The Volumes entirely took shape while attending Brackenridge High School with three additional pieces added: Ronnie Wallace and brothers, Ralph & Ronnie Warner.
The Volumes recorded one single for Hector Valadez's label, Garu. The single, "I'm Gonna Miss You," sung by Ronnie Wallace, and the flip, "Never Been So In Love," sang by Robert Williams, were both engineered by legendary Tejano producer Manny Guerra..
Robert Williams continues to perform today in San Antonio, TX.
𝗟𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗝𝗿. 𝗝𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲 & 𝗛𝗶𝘀 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗗𝗿𝗼𝗽𝘀
Lil' Jr. Jesse, aka Jesse Vallado, is a former student Council President of Edgewood High School.
The Teardrops consisted of Bobby Bustos (Organ), Jesse Jimenez (Drums), Jesse De La Garza (Bass), Paul Almean (Guitar), Larry Filippone (Sax), Isidore Arias (Sax), Richard Tellez (Trumpet), Armenel Tellez (Trumpet), and Jesse Vallado (Vocals)
Jesse first started as a radio DJ with Henry "Pepsi" Peña - the two were DJs on
"𝘛𝘰𝘱 𝘛𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘛𝘶𝘯𝘦𝘴 𝘚𝘩𝘰𝘸" on KEDA.
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗽𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀
Another high school band from Brackenridge, the Eptones, consisted of Joe Jama (bass), Robert Gomez (Guitar), and legendary Tejano singer David Marez.
For a brief period, former TV news anchor Fred Lozano was also part of the Eptones. He and Joe Jama had a group called "The Revells."
After the Eptones, David Marez and Joe Jama both went on to join the legendary Royal Jesters.
David Marez had an illustrious career in Tejano has been nominated for several Tejano Awards, including a Tejano Album of the Year for his 2004 album, "Bringin' It Back."
Both David Marez and Joe Jama continue their music careers today, playing all around the country.
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀:
Originally the Royaltones, The Dreamliners consisted of Claire Peralta, Sylvia Wilburn, and Cecilia Silva and came together in 1961 at South San Antonio High School.
The three began performing at VFW Halls and military bases in greater Bexar County as teenagers gaining the attention of record mogul Abie Epstein of Epstein Enterprises.
The Dreamliners' first single was Wilburn's original "Just You and Me."
The trio also backed Sunny & the Sunliners during his residency in Las Vegas.
By 1968, the Dreamliners decided to split. Peralta and Silva decided to leave the entertainment industry, while Wilburn recorded jingles in the commercial business.
