Often we have a very good background image that we would like to use as projected texture on a geometry in Maya, but then if we are going to apply some simulation/motion on the geometry, texture will slide.
There is a workflow to bake the projected texture onto the geometry. Hope this video helps, if you are looking for such a solution.
In compositing, you can create further derbies, smoke, dust etc. to augment the shot as required.
