Deaf Malaysia here from Alor Setar. English is taught (optional) in STEM subjects at most schools in Malaysia. Malaysia gained independence from the British, who ruled for almost 150 years and established strong foundations such as schools, hospitals, and a governmental system etc. Malaysia has successfully preserved these foundations. In contrast, in Vietnam, while many people spoke French in the past, nowadays, the use of French is on the decline due to their strong nationalist narrative. In Indonesia, it's a different scenario, as Dutch colonial rule limited access to Dutch language education for some Indonesians. Filipinos speak English due to the American colonisation. :)
I was the first generation when the government change Math & Science subjects from Malay to English language.
