As the guy who gave you the information, please let me clarify. My standard of living whilst living in Thailand is higher than the one, I could enjoy if I lived in the UK and earned an average wage. Lets say £20,000 a year. I am retired living off two pensions and can afford to save which I would not be able to do if living in the UK. In addition, I don’t work. Waking up each morning in Thailand knowing I don’t have to work and the day is mine is reward enough. To clarify about food, I cook my own in the main. This shows I rent a town house unfurnished that is to say without anything at all. So yes, I have had to make an investment in the likes of fridge-freezers, cookers, bed, furniture and washing machine etc etc. I don’t eat 3 meals a day otherwise I would be fat and have health issues. I eat some days one meal sometimes 2. Yes, I have an extension of stay. When you factor in the 90-day reporting it would come out at 390 baht so apologise for that one. Yes, private house uses air-con just a couple months a year in bedroom only on an hour per night. Pay True direct honestly for internet got a cheap deal which they continue. Yes, cooking gas for about 3-4 months. Bike running costs including fuel. Have lived here 20 years. Hope this is helpful👍😊

A different way to approach this issue would be to have someone submit their U.S. budget, and see how much it would cost to maintain the same lifestyle in Chiang Mai. Some subscribers to this channel are living on $200,000 per year, and some are living on $25,000 per year. Obviously, what each individual needs to maintain a "comfortable" lifestyle is going to be different. For me, as an American, there would be enormous savings in healthcare costs ($5 for a single rabies shot in Thailand vs. $3,000--yes three thousand U.S. dollars--for a SINGLE [one of four] rabies shot in the U.S.), long-term care (nursing home costs in Chiang Mai are around a fifth to a quarter of nursing home costs in the U.S., which are close to $8,000 per month), Thai food (a $50 Thai meal here would be $10 or $15 in Chiang Mai), and travel (you can't even park your car at the airport in the U.S. for $100, much less fly somewhere, and God help you if you have to stay in a $20 per night hotel room in the U..S.). But my spending on massage would probably increase from nothing to $150 per month, or more if I could afford it. What is beyond doubt is that if you are trying to live on $1,000 per month, that money is going to go a lot farther in Chiang Mai than it would even in the most affordable regions of the United States. On a budget of $400 per month, in the U.S. you'd be lucky to be able to find a room to rent, and, if you did, your housing costs would consume your entire budget.

That's a good point. I have eliminated most of my bills and my children are grown and I paid $200 a month to stay at a friend's place all bills included in Tennessee. And the only other bill I have besides gas and food is $55 a month phone bill. So yeah I have heard many Americans say you can't live on less than $2,000 a month or something and they're out of their mind

Rabies shots really aren't needed in the US, but are needed in Thailand because of the soi dogs everywhere. Long term care? So you want to die in a foreign country all alone with no family around? What about freedoms and personal liberties in Thailand? You have none. You cannot put a price on that. And Thai medical is only good for basic procedures.

Those who said "how could you live on less than 100$ on groceries" Simple, I lived in Bulgaria (more expensive than SEA) and it was my budget. Here an example of typical dish => Morning : Coffee => grain + grinder + italian coffee machine. Two VERY good coffee for less than 0.10 euro Oat + milk + water in the morning.=> almost nothing, let's say 0.10-0.15 euro afterm : le diner : Rice, eggs, onions, carotts, chicken (I bought full chicken, it's cheaper than buying part) => 0.80 euro to 1.6 euro ( depending how much chicken you want) evening : Souper : lens (0.20 euro) + half onion and carott (0.10 euro ) +20 grams of bacon for the taste (like 0.15 euro) I also made some croque-madame at 16h00 if i was a bit hungry and bought some apples/oranges (like 4 euro a big bag of 20 smalls apples) Total : about 1.5 euro/day (because I didn't eat chicken every day ofc) in a month 50 euro Then I added some beer, thootpaste, soap, blades (I use an old cheap coupe-chou, as in the west back in times it was used. It's cheaper than the 4xxxx blades), toilet paper, bootle of water, etc... Clearly, it's not that hard to live on this budget if you 100% cook yourself.
