Unless you happen to work in a cashew plant or pick cashew apples, it’s unlikely you’ll encounter completely raw cashews. The so-called raw cashews are not exactly raw, but instead are steamed. The case that the double shell surrounding the raw cashew contains urushiol, a resin that can create significant skin rashes, and can be toxic when ingested.

BTW the reason isn't because of having a problem from drinking the ice, It is because they are just so much better than the ones that turn into water a few minutes after they are made. They are OK though if you drink them quickly!

Greater sensitivity to urushiol can lead to extreme allergic reaction when raw cashews are ingested, and anyone allergic to poison ivy could potentially have a fatal reaction to eating true raw cashews. This is why we don’t eat strictly raw cashews. Even the “unroasted’ varieties are steamed to release urushiol from the nut and make it safe to eat. Certainly, those raw cashews sold as raw have been processed to remove urushiol..

You must be up north. I get cashews in Pattaya 100 baht for 100 grams if I remember correctly. On South Pattaya Road by 2nd Road. She sells them by the kilo too for a better price, also has dried fruit.

Chiang Mai has one of the largest expat populations in SE if not all of asia, and it shows in food variety, and yes, one of the cheaper places in Thailand. A great place, especially because most of the expats assimilated into the area instead of the place turning into one big western style expensive city. But the western food is so good and cheap, I loved it there, so relaxing but still with the amenities of a big city. Outside the city are 2 malls, theatres, etc...

thanks for the correction. I was reading about growing and harvesting cashews and it seemed like too much trouble to be. I think Brazil nuts would be easier as, if I remember correctly from elementary school, they come as a bunch in a big pod and if you pick the pod you get dozens. pistachios needs 2 machines or pick 1 nut at a time.

Interesting. And the prices tell you that you should eat as a Thai would. Taste is learned. Six months and you'll prefer the local option.
@EscapetoThailand

Hey Neil. That used to be the case. Unfortunately it isn't any more. The western diet has changed the Thai's body shape noticeably in the last few years. The biggest aisle in the supermarket is now the chips section. Thais constantly eat junk food from 7-11 and the Western fast food franchises are now the place to eat if you have any affluence. :)

WOW! It seems I have a lot of things to explore on this years vacation! Thanks a lot for this video, JC! It seems tat it's a lot of snacs for a very reasonable prices. Btw, the food stall where you got the crepe and talked to the students, is it located along the street that goes north-south from the Chiang Puak Gate? It looks like a bunch of food stall I walked by last November. I recon the students, the shops behind and the fence on the other side of the street. :-)

Wow, I am starting to feel like a real World Traveler. I know the corner where you bought the ice cream. It is on Phra Pok Klao 13 just outside the Wat Chiang Mai (south east corner) inside the Old City, right? I would frequently get my smoothies at the Somphet market, just a couple short blocks east of there at 'Tips Best Smoothies' (I even made a video about it a while back). Great memories, I can almost smell the food.

A lot of people have this idea.. that the street vendors are dirty compared to the western standards. The fact is that the food are good and fresh, and I would pick a street vendor over many restaurants where I come from (Denmark). And as you point out, I to never got sick from eating food or snacks from these places.

Well, seafood is not that bad. I'm Thai and was born in Phuket, an island in the southern part of Thailand. I've eaten seafood for all my entire life and haven't had a single problem so far. It depends on where you buy it. Also, what you said about food poisoning is not the fact. Please do some research before saying it. You can't just use your own experience or things happened to people around you to judge the whole country. It's not right. There are good and bad things everywhere.

Do not know what you are talking about. There was nothing in the ice cream. Maybe you saw the bottom of the stainless steel container. As I mentioned to her, she was almost empty. Also she never touches the food with her hands. But if you are worried about this too much then probably the West with their standards would be more to your liking. I have only gotten sick here twice from food and both were from chain restaurants.

Thai people do get sick from eating cheap street food. Hospitals take in Thais with food poisoning more than any other illness. My wife's mother who is Thai has had 5 such visits in her lifetime so far. One of her friends could not meet out with us because he was in the hospital for eating bad food. So the best you can do is go to stalls where a lot of locals go and look for a cooler that has ice were the food is stored. And make sure they cook the food thoroughly in front of you. No seafood.:(
