Thallium is the 81st element in the periodic table. It has a reputation of being very toxic and its salts have been used in rat and insect poison, and more notoriously, as a murderer's solution. Even Agatha Christie used Thallium as a poison in one of her novels! This use as a rodenticide has been banned due to its toxic nature to other animals in the food chain. Thallium does have use in radiation detectors and infrared windows on specialized instrumentation.
