'Indaba Is' released January 29th 2021 on Double 12" LP, CD & DD: indaba-is.lnk.to/indaba
'Dikeledi' is a Sesotho word that means “ tears” and is the title of Thandi Ntuli's track. Here, Thandi shares her inspiration for the song.
"Although tears can have a sad/negative connotation, this is not a sad song but rather highlights something I once read that I found incredibly poetic: “ Our tears are Holy Water!”... “ It is abundantly clear... that the human being is a divine spark or ray of Light from the God of Light” - Mathole Motshekga.
The song was inspired by a book written by Dr Mathole Motshekga ( quoted above) called “ UBUNTU”. Ubuntu is very central in our Indigenous philosophies across various cultures as South Africans and, as far as I know, across the whole continent. But often, it has been used as a catch phrase that, in my opinion, has largely diluted its meaning. This book by Dr Motshekga, broke down the etymology of the word in the various Bantu languages as well as giving an
explanation of what each part means. It blew me away to realize that embedded in the very make up of our languages is the belief that there is Divinity in all human beings.
As a young African whose experience of the world has been in the context of growing up in an urbanized, post- colonial and apartheid world, I have often felt removed from a deep understanding of our own cultures and beliefs. The Westernized perspective has increasingly dominated my outlook. This song is therefore, a remembrance of our True Identity as Higher beings. It basically is a call to remember ones True Essence in a world that is hell bent on making us forget by trying to answer the question: “ Unoziva here kuti ndiwe ani? Do you know Who You Are?”
Thandi Ntuli hails from a lineage of rich musical heritage, as the niece of multi- instrumentalist and lead vocalist of afro fusion band Harari, Selby Ntuli. Thandi has created her own space in the scene. Having achieved the Standard Bank Young Artist of the Year for Jazz, Thandi has continued soaring. Following her successful debut release “The Offering” (2014), was the highly anticipated project "Exiled", which included aspects of different genres and with her voice bringing Stevie Wonder-esque soul wrapped in socially conscious artistry that speaks beyond the South African maled dominated jazz idiom.
