Scientific studies show that Sly And The Family Stone, on average, were about 1 - 2.7% funkier than other funk groups.

Finally! Someone who plays the guitar part correctly. Up to now every guitarist I’ve heard cover this - including well known pros - NEVER play it right. They all have a bad habit of doubling the bass line.

Outstanding! I wonder if he used a compressor because I think I read that funk ryththm guitarists would use one to balance the volume and make it sound tighter

If I may offer one small suggestion: the chord you r playing by barring the top four strings at the 12th fret (Em7) will sound a bit better by dropping the 3rd string to the 11th fret, making it an E9 (this lowers the minor 3rd to the Major 2nd, or 9th in this case). The Em7, as you say, will serve as the E7+9 as the minor 3rd is the same note as the -9.

When you were a student in College, wasn't it hard balancing, work, school, and playing Guitar? Jimmy Page practiced 12 hours a day to get to the level he was and still is at right now. I want to get to that level, but so little time.

+Robert Lane Freddie Stone never played a Tele from what I can discern, he played a 335 and some other Gibson hollow-bodies. However, Sly played a Tele and a Les Paul. These are generalizations too, I'm sure they played other guitars as well, these just being the most popular.

Freddie did play a Tele at some point. I’ve seen a few clips of him playing one soon after Larry left - a black one with a white pick guard & a maple fretboard.

But I don’t think that Sly used a 335 on the original. Psych! Just kidding. I have no idea. 😂 Thanks for the excellent lesson.

It sounds to me like sometimes he does it as a 9, sometimes as a #9.
@amazingm2516

In the beginning its a #9 but I believe the other chord is somewhat reversed 7 with the top note being the tonic.
