Having had a lot of comments about how "the pacing issues were just due to the weekly release schedule"... That's probably true tbh, will have to re-read it and give it a chance. p.s. this video was not at all supposed to be "bashing" MHA (I thought the amount of times I said I was wrong about a lot of the criticsms I had would have made this clear lol, but apparently pointing out any sort of flaw is "bashing" a series"). MHA for me was a gateway into anime. I was weirded out by people who talk about this weird Japanese genre of shows you have to watch with subtitles, but after watching just a few episodes of MHA I was hooked. The characters are incredible, the fights are so intense and yet so beautiful at the same time. The relationships and friendships between the characters which slowly get better over time as they get closer are so heartwarming. Seeing every character have a chance to shine at some point is also so satisfying. I credit MHA for allowing me to open the door into anime, so I can now go off and find what I like and what else I'm able to be passionate about. While I wouldn't say MHA is my favorite anime, It is the most important one to me. So thanks Horikoshi for what you did for us

Love the retrospective man, it's also really nice to see people coming back around to MHA again and hearing how much the series meant to you! Just my two cents here, from my perspective of being a casual weekly reader since the sports festival: MHA has always been rough to follow on a week-to-week basis imo, I think much of that comes from it actually being rather complex for a shounen in terms of the amount of characters, plot threads etc. to keep track of when you're getting drip-fed tiny bits once per week (if even) for years on end. So it makes a lot of sense to me that the latter parts work much better in anime format or binged. It's also a series I very much want to reread for that reason, because I feel like I've missed out on tons of details and bigger picture stuff over the years. A bit of an aside here, but it's actually always surprised me when people talk about MHA feeling unplanned. To me, there are barely any battle shounen out there that feel as intentional and cohesive as MHA in terms of themes, worldbuilding, plot and character storylines (One Piece being the only other title off the top of my head). I've revisited bits and pieces from earlier in the story here and there and it's stunning to see just how cleanly everything flows from start to end and how much care Horikoshi put into laying the groundwork for the finale. I guess I might just be the outlier here though, since for me the Deku solo stuff through the Stars & Stripes fight was my absolute favourite time to be a MHA reader and it really sucked to see so much negativity in the fandom at the time (insofar as I engaged with it). Anyways, apologies for the tl;dr, but I love MHA and really hope that we're in for a re-appraisal once the manga is over!

Good to hear from you man! And yeah tbh now that I think about it, I suspect it may have been partly down to just kinda getting burnt out on the series a bit (happened to me with AOT even tho it's still one of my favourites, went back to it after a while and loved it again. Also yeah, reading weekly can definitely kill a series' momentum at times, I think it did get to the point where I was opening the chapter half expecting not to like it which probably didn't help lol I think the earlier days of MHA will always be my favourite just for the impact it had on me. But yeah it is a great series, I just feel as though he didn't quite execute these last couple arcs as well as he could have (although I'm slowly starting to disagree with that due to the anime's much better pacing) but still, will definitely miss it!

Would love to hear your perspective once the anime wraps then, it's really cool that seeing the story through a different medium is changing how you view it! most don't like seasons 5+ is because it's not like Jujutsu Kaisen and Naruto etc. Only because MHA doesn't have that dark path and plot twists that these other animes do. While I agree the war arc IS longer than it should, it's still great. It doesn't JUST focus on the main character saving the day, it's about all the characters have an impact on their lives and trying to help others and themselves get over the trauma they have and become better heroes, and better people. I really don’t think the Final War is actually poorly paced in the manga. I just think reading week to week is literally the worst way to experience a story. The anime feels better paced because an episode is probably 3-4 chapters combined, so you basically get 3-4 chapters of content every week, while in the manga you get literally 1 chapter a week if not 1 every 2 weeks.

I just wish they would have let Shigaraki take the mantle without AFO controlling his mind. AFO could’ve came back and those two could’ve duked it out to symbolize the true rise of Shiggy and his ideals, but we didn’t get that, and I mean it’s still a good series either way.

(Spoilers obviously ) i noticed that a lot of people seem to be disappointed with the ending, at least on deku's part, like he got "robbed" but in the manga and even the anime, it was pretty evident that it focuses on everybody not just deku, and it's reiterated on the manga that it's about how they ALL became the greatest heroes. The essence of it all is that a hero can be someone selfless if it's for the better of a majority of people. It shows that deku left an impact on their society in the aftermath of the war. yknow, despite not being "in the scene" anymore. He might not have been dubbed as "the new symbol of peace" but all the people around him, who interacted with him, even briefly, incited something in them to be like deku which is essentially, someone who is genuinely heroic. As a character with that type of personality, i dont think he cares much about being "in the limelight" when it comes down to it he just wants to help. it's how he's always been.

While I can appreciate the sentiment in this video, I found a couple of your comments a bit confusing and backhanded tbh. I don’t know if it’s because you don’t want to be mocked for this, considering you did spend time mocking the story, to (which I find a bit sad for someone whose analysis I find quite interesting when it comes to other manga) but it’s clear you want to give prompts….but also don’t at the same time 😅 tho it does feel like your thanks at the end is genuine which is nice. Anyway, as for my feelings in general, I find the argument of pacing funny because in the next breath, you say how you fell off during S5 which is season that has THE most biggest deviation from manga: switching around of arcs, removing important internal dialogue, removing Spinner’s backstory, shorting MVA, etc. So to me it’s weird to praise the pacing of the anime compared to the manga, when it’s the one to destroy to begin with. BUT I will say that overall the anime doesn’t remove THAT much of the overall plot and themes of MHA. So this idea of having an issue with multiple story elements (as you claim since you don’t elaborate too much) but also saying you’re enjoying it in the anime cause it can put 3-4 chapters into 1 episode doesn’t make sense to me. Clearly it seems to me that your issue is with the slower pacing of weekly MHA and not the story itself. So it’s sad to hear that you ragged on it so much but are now gushing over S7. So clearly the story and themes aren’t lost on you. Another thing I have an issue with the whole “oh the writer didn’t know what he wanted to do with this story *insert out of context quote here*” 😭 this again is a bit disingenuous. Firstly, Horikoshi’s quote in the 1st volume is in reference to the fact that his first 2 manga attempts in Jump were CANCELLED. Thus, he is literally saying that out of worry that this story might be cancelled too and he’s just thankful for the chance to tell the story. It has NOTHING to do with whether he had a plan or not. Where would you even get this impression, I have no idea. But it’s clear with the knowledge that Horikoshi is thinking that this IS his final attempt at telling HIS stories then the quote is more about his feelings of FEAR, rather than not having a “plan”. Also, Horikoshi has mentioned multiple times that he had the story planned out. Now, I DO agree with your point that he probably didn’t think that MHA would become as popular as it is, especially outside of Japan. It’s most certainly that numerous decisions were made by him (and by Jump) that were altered in order to make the story LONGER than it was planned to be. Heck, Horikoshi mentioned how he planned to reveal the traitor plot line all the way back in S3, but the editors told him to wait. I think he’s even mentioned the story was 2x long as it was meant to be. That could contribute to some issue of pacing BUT nevertheless the major plot lines did NOT change much. In addition, it was during the writing of the 1st War in the manga, where there were signs of Horikoshi being ill and having issues with his drawing hand. It was the start of long stretches of shorter chapters and long breaks. Which did affect the pacing from here on out but it clearly wasn’t intentional on Horikoshi’s part. To ME, it’s clear that it wasn’t that story wasn’t planned or had no direction, but rather Horikoshi just PHYSICALLY couldn’t put out THAT kind of quality anymore. And that aspects of the story had to be cut or shortened so as to get closer to the end. Right now, Horikoshi has a TEAM that is helping him, just so he can continue to push out chapters weekly. Had Horikoshi been physically able to continue, I think MHA could’ve gone on longer and its pacing during the longer arcs would’ve been fixed. At the end of the day, I don’t see MHA as a great story that fell off but rather a tale of how a brutal industry can hinder a humble artist’s work. Same ppl can handle that kind of industry and some ppl just physically can’t. Overall though, I think MHA’s themes and overall plot are well-written and nuanced in a way I never expected it would be. I feel like it’ll be the kind of story that ppl ragged on but will get a much better appreciation in time as being quite great. Sorry the rant 😅 that was way too long I’m done now.

I somehow wasn't aware of the health issues until I saw the comments, which is mb and I probably should have looked into a lot more than I did before making this video - I kinda just wanted it to be a quick one to not take away from the other bits I was working on. I also do think the point about the issue more being the weekly releases starting to drag on me is very true, I had a similar thing with AOT (and even starting to get it a bit with Blue Lock). But yeah whilst the season 5 adapatation did make a little bit of a mess of things, I do still think (although this may change if/when I decide to re-read the manga for season 6/7 content) that the pacing of the anime has made it a lot more enjoyable. But again, that could just be to the weekly burn-out over years, as when I ended up going back to AOT I really enjoyed it then so the same may happen with MHA too. And yeah it's absolutely 100% genuine, I owe this show a LOOOOT of my own development. It's not really a case of "wanting to give props but not wanting to", but more that I just think the show has strengths but also a few issues. Still love it though, and will definitely miss it.

@@LessonsFromAnime I am not sure how much information about Horikoshi’s health is out outside of those who read weekly. There have been some anime-onlies who are aware but it’s definitely something that was noticeable when reading weekly, due to the sudden, long breaks and short chapters. No one really knows exactly what’s going on but it’s clear that something changed and it’s something physical. Weekly reading is a draining task. I’ve quit and gone back to multiple manga due to this. Heck, I’ve done this to OP quite a few times but on rereads, I ended up enjoying it more. With the anime, you can get multiple chapters in an episode so everything flows like it’s intended. However, with MHA, I much prefer the manga in the sense that Horikoshi’s art is so beautiful and detailed and it is something Bones at this point just can’t match imo. And yes, some aspects of the anime makes things more enjoyable. Like Bones does often extend the fights (and add in some extra info) that makes them more fun to watch. I guess my point is that the overall context and plot lines are still the same. So nothing there has really changed. I guess my problem was with the whole “Mid Academia” comments that you said you would joke with your friends about. Which to me, comes off a bit childish to do, and then to turn around and say “thank you” is kinda…idk it just threw me off. Like I said, I kinda fell off OP (and AOT too) a few times, but I didn’t go around calling it Mid Piece or Attack on Mid Titan. I also wouldn’t say that the authors just “didn’t know what they were doing” either in a “Thank You” video to them. I know it’s been a popular thing in the last few years to shit on MHA, even for pretty benign things. It does seem like that’s changed now that’s ending, which I’m glad. But again, to me, certain aspects of the video were very backhanded. And some comments were just unnecessary reaches against the author. Ultimately, I’m not saying you can’t have those feelings at all. It’s your video after all. I just found it a bit off-putting and thought I’d share my feelings. I appreciate the response 😊 hope you will enjoy it more in a reread and/or when the anime completes.

I just had a thought after thinking about my mha and why i love haikyuu so much and why i dont really like Shonen in general because haikyuu is so much more realistic. I often cannot relate with these heros because they have the power of friendship and they just level up and beat the monster but for haikyuu, oikawa for example shows that no matter what he did, he couldnt beat ushijima and it shows in his past people like kageyama that just showed up and best him, the envy and the jelously and the comparisons are all too real. And he stayed that way from middle school to 3rd year of highschool, just that long mental struggle and then he finally starts to realize and change his mindset based on what a coach had told him long time ago Even if haikyuu is exxagerated shonens like mha are kinda like extreme exaggerations
