If you look at North Face’s parent company, VF Corporation, they also own Dickies and Bulwark. Bulwark is probably the leading manufacturer of Fire Resistant Clothing for the oil and gas industry. You eloquently expressed how I feel. I'm an engineer who spent 30 years working in the petroleum industry. I'm also an avid practitioner of many outdoor pursuits. I often get called a hypocrite (by people who have no idea what that word means) for the fact that I work in oil but enjoy nature. Quite the contrary. I agree that all human activity has an impacts on the environment, and I've spent a lifetime at work trying to reconcile that fact. It is absolutely possible to extract resources while minimizing our impact on the environment. It's a matter or risk vs. benefit. As you point out, the benefits of cheap energy far outweigh the risks to the environment.
@christimmins1233

Smart response from Mr. Wright. I get he's talking about the past and current state of synthetic textiles (even with 30% or more of PET coming from recycled plastics), and I understand the reliance on petrol-powered logistics for shipping. Mr. Wright is... right, in so much as the current state of the marketplace. Virtually every major CPG and clothing company is reliant on oil and gas. However, one has to ask what got us here and why are there no other options? What is the current environment in which clothing manufacturers are operating? Why aren't there more alternative consumer choices that do not rely on oil and fossil fuels? After defense manufacturers, petroleum companies are the most government-subsidized entities on the planet. And if they did not receive government subsidies to such an extent, then how could there be the proliferation of petroleum-based plastics and textiles we see today? The same thing happened with corn subsidies after WW2. The massive surplus of corn forced food manufacturers to invent corn syrup, corn starch, etc., etc.. Then the food supply chain was built upon corn as a primary ingredient. Go into a grocery store in the 1990s and more than half of every packaged food had corn derivatives, because it was a government-subsidized commodity. Following a similar train of logic, Wright's statement could apply to the entire food system and agriculture which is reliant on petroleum-based fertilizers. Does that mean that oil and gas companies are everyone's savior, responsible for feeding all of America? No way. If you're dependent on a substance that leads to death and destruction, that doesn't mean you're obliged to be grateful to the source or dealer. Is TNF green-washing and obfuscating their reliance on oil? Of course they are. Nevermind TNF outsourcing to 3rd World countries for cheaper labor. And wasn't Victoria's Secret (owned by the same parent company, VF) using prison labor? But those are straw men arguments to the larger concern here: our global reliance on oil. Why not think bigger than the current state of the market? Perhaps the government could give the same funding & subsidies to hemp farmers instead of oil companies. Then we would see what happens. Perhaps the market would respond with more sustainable clothing, textiles, and plastics made of hemp and other natural fibers instead of a reliance on oil & gas. This trail leads us to the lobbying industrial complex, something Left, Right, and Center all agree upon: getting private money out of politics. Corporations are not citizens and should not have the power to write laws that give them tax loopholes and favorable regulation.
