Love the content. Glad I found the channel. Started a putting green project myself this year and have found this all useful looking to next year.

I have a couple of questions but one of them is, When is the best time of year to plant bentgrass ?

The preferred answer is early Fall. Really you can plant Fall and Spring. I think it just depends on where you live. For me, I get better results in the Spring because the days start getting longer and the soil temps rise. Summer is usually too hot for for grass once it sprouts. It gets fried very easily. July and August are my hottest months and I avoid seeding then.

Happy Thanksgiving!!! Im thinking for next spring, my east facing backyard struggles a bit coming back every spring/summer, really thin looking tif way Bermuda. Im in far west Texas, what is your advise on my choice of grass the area closest to my house gets the least sun and is the thinnest area. My front yard, common Bermuda (west facing) is really looking good.

Hey Texas T! Could you send me a photo of the area to info@reelturf.com? That would help me get a better look at what you’re dealing with. Talk soon!

Wanting to know a good schedule for pre emergent around PRG over seed in October I heard you can put it down 3-4 months prior.. I put down full rate dimension feb and was thinking... June- prodiamine 1/2 rate Oct- PRG over seed Dec- prodiamine 1/2 rate Feb/ March- back to dimension I over seeded front yard only last season and did not use any pre emergent in front and got some poa problems out there. Just wanted to make sure I wouldn’t have germination problems with this schedule. Thanks for any help 🙏

That's a very interesting approach. Let me share my experience with the matter. This is certainly not an "expert" opinion but simply how I've approached it. I think your schedule and timing would work the first year. I would be hesitant that over time you would build up such a strong pre-emergent layer that you would have a hard time getting the Perennial Rye Grass to germinate well eventually. As it pertains to seeding and pre-emergent, they say you can aerate to break the pre-emergent layer down in the soil. You could do all of this, it would be a lot of work and $$$. My approach has been this- you would be shocked that I haven't put pre emergents down on my Bermuda in several years. I have maybe a handful of weeds show up throughout the year. I attribute this to mowing at 3/8" and using plant growth regulator. These two things along with the Texas heat knock things out. The plant growth regulator builds such a dense turf canopy that it prevents the weeds from developing. I too have Poa show up every spring after over seeding. You can use a product called Negate 37WG that works VERY well. It's similar to MSM but the ingredients are different rates. It will kill that poa for you. This is why I haven't stressed over pre-emergent and poa in the past. However on another approach, I would hit it strong with pre-emergents in January/February depending on where you're located. Early February is my window in Texas before poa and other weeds start developing. If you have a lot of weed problems use one product in Early February and another mid season. The first of July is when I have to put pre-emergent down to prevent goose grass in my bentgrass. I know there is a lot of content out there about doing Pre's in the Fall and Spring. That approach doesn't work here for me because my weeds and grassy weeds develop at different times than everybody else. That approach works for the 95% typical DIYer to prevent a mass amount of weeds but not so much for the 5% that run their lawn like a golf course. It took me a few years to figure that out. All that to say, do what works for you. Use your own common sense. You know your land better than anyone. There is no one perfect way to do it all. Either direction you go, your lawn will look awesome! If you would like more information about Negate 37 WG, there is a link to these products in my video descriptions.

@@ReelTurf thanks for the response makes much more sense I’ll just stick to the the feb application and spray any poa out when I smoke off the rye...🙏thanks again...I was becoming the pre emergent police for a minute over here 😂😂
