Thar is one of the largest deserts in Pakistan. It covers the east of Sindh province. Over 90 000 people live in it. Most depend on rearing animals and growing crops, for their living.
They have almost nothing. No access to health care, or schools, or transport. Food is in short supply. The women walk miles every day to fetch water from wherever they can find it.
In 1991, coal was discovered in the Thar desert. A survey estimated 184 BILLION TONNES of coal, making these the largest coal reserves in the world.
Work is slowly getting underway to exploit these coal reserves, with the help of foreign investors. The area has been made a special economic zone, with tax holidays for foreign mining companies. Chinese companies have expressed interest.
But .... WHAT ABOUT THE JOBS FOR THE LOCAL PEOPLE???
Thari people already live in sub-human conditions and remain deprived of even access to safe drinking water, sewerage, healthcare, transport and education.
