I really connect with what you were talking about at the end there. Popping has improved over time in terms of techniques becoming cleaner and more refined, yet it has regressed overall because of the massive drop in standards for what is considered good. Even just considering boogaloo, which is what everyone seems to herald these days: look at old footage of Taco, Boogaloo Shrimp, or even random, no name poppers getting down at the time. The standard back then was so much higher… a display of individuality was the norm, not the exception. People’s moves were clear, original, powerful, clean, and musical. Everything had a clear sense of flow and purpose. People completed their moves before moving onto the next move or idea. Not saying it was perfect, but it was at least a hundred times better than what we have today. Nowadays the standards from back then have been lost and replaced with cheap, superficial standards or just no standards at all. Instead of building on the foundation of the past most people seem to have just forgotten about it. I’m not black so I can’t speak personally about the durag, but that, along with the other appropriation that’s going on, seems to indicate that many people can only remember the superficial aspects of popping (the clothes, looking cool when you hit hard to the beat and vibrate, techniques) and not the culture and history that defined it as a style. I especially agree with that Bruno Mars analogy. To a lot of people watching today, it may sound a little harsh, but it’s very true. MT Pop stands out today because he’s one of the few people who approach popping in the proper way, by understanding and practicing the standards of the past while innovating with his own creativity. He cuts his teeth on his craft in the way that people back then did. And yes, he’s absolutely incredible and unreal in his own right. Yet the funny thing is - most of the principles that he applied in this video to beat Sharkbomb - logical flow between moves and concepts, intentionality of moves, cleanliness of concepts - these principles are actually what the standard for popping SHOULD be, because that’s what it used to be. But it’s not anymore, so now we see those things MT is doing here as exceptional, instead of as expected. The bar has been lowered instead of raised over time, and that’s a good thing for MT Pop’s success (he can pretty much just stand there and win every single battle at this point), but a sad, sobering reality for popping.

I would have to disagree, dancers back then was super repetitive, mind you I have tons of footage back then that I have collected, stuff that is not even on youtube.

MT looked crazy in that last round! Felt like Shark Bomb was stuck trying to match the energy MT had in his rounds, I'd like to see more from him though he had some dope moments in his rounds too.

This was MT Pop’s revenge for his gf at 2018 together time seven to smoke-sharkbomb smoked everybody. Sharkbomb’s style seems a little less dynamic here in comparison to his older videos.

I see what ppl mean about mt pop and his evolution and creativity but sharkbomb still has more to offer in the popping aspect. Mt pop movements and rhythms are generally the same just more playful and concepts but lacks in hard pops quite often to have that freedom which still takes away from the craft but just my opinion. You can’t take away from popping bc it doesn’t fit the criteria off creativity and loud moves. It’s hard to creative when ppl want you to be more hip hop than popper, or more showcase than battle minded. Sharkbomb might not be the best representation of elite popping but I still feel like he won and props to both

Honestly my biggest problem with watching foreign "street" dance/battles is the cultural appropriation. Whether it's the European or Asian scenes it's like Malibu's Most Wanted up in there. They view black styles as costumes to be worn, and it kinda pulls me out tbh.

I get bored watching popping too. For me it's that they rarely connect to the music at all - I don't feel anything. And that's fine, different people like different things.
