Had to learn how to play it for the last band I was in. Its a simple song but the opening riff & solo can be tricky. Funny if you watch Gary Busey in The Buddy Holly Story he does it without the capo. Truly a higher level guitarist than the rest of us. :D Dubbed?! Impossible! :D

Great lesson. I love Buddy Holly. We play this song in our band. People are happier with far less. So true. Years ago, I was feeling sorry for myself. I picked up a magazine and saw how some people in Central America live. The picture was looking down into a ravine like the Grand Canyon. There is a village of makeshift houses next to each other made from pieces of metal, cardboard , sometimes wood. The whole village look like level one of a house of cards. Then they showed a woman with a small child living in one of these shacks. She had the clothes on her back ,a dirt floor , her baby had a toy. She had a broom and a pot to cook in. The average person living there made $8.00 a week. And get this….. They were happy. I’ve never allowed myself to have a pity party ever again. Compared to them, I live like a King.

Thanks again, Damian, for this timely and topical lesson on the 63rd anniversary of "The Day the Music Died" (but only temporarily). This is the lesson I needed because the first way I learned it was standard tuning open strings, D-A-E with the B7 turnaround-- all played fingerstyle. Your Buddy Holly lesson won't be wasted, even as I continue to work through Ultimate Rockabilly Guitar. 🤔🧐😀🎸

Nice one Boss, I absolutely love your "every day is a Holly day!", perfect 👌. I was playing this song with my friends way back in high school ( middle school for you) back in '76/77 we were all Buddy crazy back then before punk grabbed us. He's still I'd one of my all time favourites. Rock 'n' Roll never dies and once it's in your soul it never leaves. By the way at that time I was just the singer, I didn't take the guitar seriously until I was sixteen. I did play the uke, but drums were more my thing as I wanted to play an instrument my dad didn't, stupid when I look back. 😎🎙🎸✅

Hi Damian, thanks for this great lesson. Honestly, i had some serious problem with the counting in the solo as written your tab. I am missing a beat. The beginning of your 1st tab corresonds to stroke 2 ithink, and the e chord on the end of thi tab is stroke 1 of the next time measure, i think. That is the only way i can make it match with the subdominant shuffle part. What do you think? Comment would be appreciated. Greetings from Berlin

Hello Damian, hope you’re doing fine. So lucky to live in Florida : a friend of mine has a house in Daytona Beach and I looove going there. Next time will be careful if I happen to see you. However, that is not my point here. My point is that I like so much your video because that’s the kind of music I love and grew with. Unlike many teens my parents born in the 40s were not becoming nuts with the kind of music I used to listen to ! lol ! And I would like to know if you could teach the jazz’ song called « Stompin’ at the Savoy » one day ? Thank you and take care ! Kareen
