The cheesy electricity running thru the cattle is actually a pretty big part of the book they tried to depict...I mean they did make the effort

I'm glad someone finally reviewed this. Some of the acting, stunt work, production design, etc is incredible.

To this day, me and my uncle Chris always tell each other "Nah, you go ahead and die if you want to. I don't care" because that's still the funniest line in the whole series to us 😂😂😂

I love this and the entire saga. I own all the mini series (even the non canon Return, which is actually a great story) and read all the books. Side note : Robert Urich was the star of a 70s detective show called Vegas, the first reboot of The Love Boat, and The original SWAT Tv series'.

Urich playing Jake Spoon is the perfect example of how well thought-out the casting was for this. Urich had played one notable villain in his career up to that point, and even that was a supporting role in Magnum Force. He'd spent his entire career playing good cops and good eggs, and was a beloved sight on families' TVs as a result. When he first shows up in this, it seems like it's gonna be the same. He's friendly, inviting, loves the guys, is great with kids, you feel warm inside when he's around. That sticks with you, and the entire time you're expecting those qualities to shine through and give him a sort of redemption, and it. Never. Happens. Entirely as a result of his own flaws, and not just what's happening around him. That's outstanding character writing, and something the hacks writing most TV today could learn a thing or two from. Filmmakers now talk about wanting to "subvert expectations," and if they could do so with this level of competence, we'd be in for a real treat.

Fun fact about Deets' grave inscription: It's a super close paraphrase of the one Charles Goodnight wrote for Bose Ikard, who the character Deets is based on.

Good description of the series, well worth the effort, since its still a great watch. I like the random encounters in the story very much as well, building a gritty frontier-setup, which was quite convincing to me. World-building & characters and soundtrack at its peak in TV

On my computer's take on KZitem's presentation of Lonesome Dove was presented in a 2+ hour version and a 6+ hour version. I'm suggesting those wishing to view it for the complete story obviously skip the 2+ version completely.
