To everyone saying it's sO fLaMmAbLe google 'experimental archaeology, Anglo-Saxon round house.' This is the roofing used back in the 5th century when houses consisted of circular walls and an open fire. Experimental archaeology is where people make houses like what they find in the archaeological record and figure out what they can't just by digging. If there's a hole in the middle for smoke to get through, it will catch fire, but if there's no hole, there's no issue.

What for tho?! High winds take it apart and it's a fire hazard, basically one tiny end takes a flame the whole building goes up in fire. Also it's a rats and mice nest so no thanks. I had a old fallen apart chicken coop standing all useless with a roof insulated with reed and it kept falling out due to high winds making a mess. Not to mention that few times I stabbed my face on the damn thing sticking out at night walking by. Got angry one day and tore it apart. At least it made a good fireplace material while cooking ayvar (pepper sauce / jam).

@@minmogrovingstrongandhealthyI'm living in the Netherlands and have never seen a roof like this taken apart by a storm. I'm 64 years old... The fire hazard is slightly higher, yes, but nowadays they treat roofs like this with a special liquid so that it becomes nearly as safe as tiles. If what you think is true, most roofs here would be destroyed during autumn, and if they would survive, then be destroyed during New Year's Eve when everyone is lighting fireworks...

The various methods are tailored to the specific environmental conditions and cultural practices of each country, combining traditional knowledge with modern fire safety technology. Here in Japan for example sprinkler systems are one of the methods used.

I would go in the fall. Fall break, rolling in the hay, bottles with xxx on them, harvest and dipping in the lake.

There was a thatched house in Des Moines Iowa down on Waterbury and as a roofer I have admired it for years ! Always wondered how it was done ! Nice to see this and knowing it's still practiced ! Great job !

For everyone wondering, a well maintained thatched roof lasts around 40 years, and costs 8-10k for an average sized cottage. Im English btw.
