Good list. I was 14, saw most of these at the theater. Lawrence was quite the spectacle. 1 Carnival of Souls. The first time I was aware of the sound design. 2 How the West was Won. The last movie using three projectors for the Cinerama Process. Hollywood was into making big cast features. 3 The Longest Day. Had anyone who was anyone doing a cameo here. 4 The Music Man. Beautiful to screen version of the Musical. Preston was magnificent 5 Gypsy. Another brilliant musical. 6 Mutiny on the Bounty. an admirable remake 7 Birdman of Alcatraz. Award winner. I saw it on a double. bill with The Miracle Worker. 8 Hatari was my John Wayne favorites. Fine Mancini score Hawks directs 9 Tales of Terror. Great cast a Corman gem. 10. Manturian Candidate. my favorite double feature, played with, Dr No.

Lawrence of Arabia is leagues beyond most movies Somehow feels fresh and ahead of its time, like all other movies of the 50s and 60s were practice

I'm convinced that Il Sorpasso was a big influence on (or even a secret text for) all the US 'movie brat' directors of the late '60s and '70s. Fateful roadtrips are all over that period of US film starting with Easy Rider and it's Il Sorpasso that nailed the template and tone for that kind of story. Good on Harry for getting it in at #3; Il Sorpasso's one of the most influential films ever made.

I'm enjoying enormously your year by year lists. Considering that you must be much younger than me I found it reassuring to see Lolita and Il Sorpasso for instance, among your choices. Plus I love the inclusion of your grandmother among your favorites

Some more movies i would include for a possibly impossible list would be... atraco a las tres (love this little film), le doulos, El angel exterminador, Cronaca familiare, Ivan´s childhood (the first of Tarko´s 7 in what is probably my favorite run in film along Bergman´s 1970´s movies and Haneke´s 2000´s), Loneliness of the long distance runner, Salvatore Giuliano, 2 weeks in another town, The trial, Proces de Jeanne d´arc, Lonely are the brave... then throw the dice or, wait, maybe i will change it to my 20 or 30 favorite movies and skip the dice bit ... easier than to tire my neuron with the endless, hopeless process of choosing i get into!
