Even as of 1453, when the only holdings the Byzantines had was Constantinople and the Peloponnesian Peninsula, it was still an extremely difficult nation to conquer. The Ottomans only won because of sheer luck. And even after getting passed the outter wall (after a gate was left open), Mehemed still close to giving up. (He himself said that if his final wave failed, he would have just left. But luckily for him it successed). It took an army of 80,000, including thousands of elite janesseries, dozens of ships, and dozens of cannons and other siege weapons, several months to barely defeat 7,000 defenders. Imagine if Constantinople was able to get more outside reinforcements before the seige.

In all honesty, the war doesn't even have to last until "General Winter" wakes up from his nap. Canada's greatest geographical edge is the fact that they sit on America's vast northern border. And America doesn't want anybody on their northern border other than the giant red maple leaf. They would help Canada against any foreign invasion from Europe, Asia, or really anywhere else, with no hesitation. And it would be so easy to defend, too, because 80% of Canada's population lives within proximity of the vast border, along with every major city (Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, Ottawa, etc), political center, and military base. All Canada really has to do is hold out until Winter, like the Russians do, because Canadian winters are borderline INHUMANE with how brutal they are!

RaidsEpicly I agree, nuclear war does seem to do that, although with the addition of a new space race that we have seen lately between rivals nations such as China and America, we may see nations try and circumvent international treaties by simply having high-orbital but not spacial weaponry in the near future that could eliminate such nuclear weapons. Add that with the rise in hypersonic missiles, we could see a new shift in geo-strategic areas of importance, like Florida for the United States, a place that can launch troops and rockets into orbit relatively quickly and with little chance of it re-entering into enemy waters, and a valuable piece of property to gain/lose if a nation were to win/lose a war. The closest equivalent I can think of for China would be Taiwan, but they don’t have much jurisdiction over there as of right now.

Yeah invading the US would be really challenging. There's a large heartland that's very well inter-connected with rivers, railways and interstates, and is home to a wide variety of resources from oil, food, lumber, steel, coal, etc. and is also home to most of the manufacturing capacity and a very large population. So while an invading nation might make a beach-head on one of the coasts, the US would still be able to launch counter attacks from the Midwest. Next question is where would an enemy try to make a beach head. West Coast? You'll be up against substantial coastal defenses, and big cities all over (urban warfare), as well as mountain warfare. If you star in California, you'll face the worst urban warfare, and if you start in the Pacific NW, you'll face mountain warfare where the Americans have significant forest cover to their advantage. In order to avoid getting outflanked, you'll also have to conquer pretty much the entire West Coast before being able to strike at the American heartland, which will involve a lot of marching across inhospitable deserts and mountain range after mountain range with relatively few worthwhile resources to capture (other than some gold and copper which is not as useful in war as fuel, steel and food). Due to the isolate nature of this region, you might have a chance at cutting off American supply lines and the Americans might have a hard time reinforcing local operations, however, due to the lack of resources, you would have to ship in most of your own resources from across the Pacific which an extremely long voyage. As a result, progress across the challenging terrain will probably be quite slow, giving Americans the chance to prepare extremely tough defenses along the Rockies which are up to 1000 miles from the Pacific Coast. The amount of territory you would need to conquer is about 1,000,000 square miles, just to get past the Rockies. By comparison, the most successful European invasion of Russia was probably by Nazi Germany, and that was only about 700,000 square miles of land conquered on the Eastern Front. This region is about as inhospitable as Afghanistan, but 10x bigger. All that just to beginning striking at valuable American assets like the coal fields of Wyoming or oil feeds of Texas. Northeast US? Again, you'll be facing intense urban warfare with every square inch being intensely fought over. The US would also be able to easily reinforce coastal operations from the Midwest, since the Midwest would be far enough to be relatively safe from attack but close enough to easily resupply, leading to massive counter attacks. Outside the cities, there would be a fair bit of forest cover for American forces, especially as you approach the Appalachians which would be intensely fortified by the time the invaders reach it. And you'd be vulnerable to outflanking counter attacks from the Midwest and Southeast. Florida? Maybe if you can get Cuba to co-operate with you, this would seem like an attractive option due to the proximity. However, in order to avoid facing intense urban warfare, you'd have to bomb the place to shit first. That means that the invasion force would be greeted by a landscape filled with bomb craters, and due to the high water table and karst landscape of Florida, that means the craters will be filled by water that will be a cesspool of disease, insects and unsanitary conditions, not to mention possibly alligators and pythons that would be a terrifying thought for your soldiers and bad for morale even if they don't result in that many deaths. After traveling through hundreds of miles of disease ridden swamps and bomb craters, you'll reach a heavily fortified US frontline around the Florida-Georgia border, all while gaining little in terms of resources and doing little real damage to the US war capabilities. Another option is to not bother with a full fledged land invasion of Florida and simply do enough damage to knock out the air and naval bases that the Americans would use to control access to the Gulf of Mexico. Then after gaining access to the Gulf, launch a second invasion force in Texas and New Orleans and wreak havoc on the US oil production capabilities by taking out all the oil rigs and refineries, and then taking the oil fields of Texas and Oklahoma. Southeastern US. The best landing point would probably around Myrtle Beach, SC. Opening a front in the SE would require large scale spread out tank warfare for a chance of long term success, similar to the Eastern Front of WWII. However, the coastal landing areas are full of swamps that would swallow up tanks. The small amount of dry land would give the initial invasion force little room to maneuver, making them easy for the Americans to cut them off with pincer movements, or target them with artillery or aerial bombardments. However, perhaps a sufficiently large and unexpected invasion force would be able to break past the swamps of the coastal lowlands and reach the Piedmont uplands. The Piedmont is still relatively flat, with rolling hills at worst, so enemy tanks could operate here. From then on, there would be three possible goals. 1) Make a push towards DC, since taking it would deal a crushing morale defeat to the Americans, and allow the enemy to move on towards other symbolic cities such as Philadelphia and New York City. 2) Make a push across North Florida and take Tallahassee to secure a position on the Gulf of Mexico, and cut off the Florida peninsula from reinforcements, and then take the rest of the Florida Peninsula. This would give access to the Gulf of Mexico and if the invaders are able to make allies with say, Venezuela, and Cuba, use those as starting points to assemble landing forces to strike into the US heartland via Louisiana and Texas. 3) Make a push to capture the front ranges of the Appalachians. From there, either a) continue pushing into the Midwest to disrupt American industrial production, this would cut the United States/Canada in two, with the Northeast on one side and the Great Plains/Rockies/Pacific on the other side. This would severely disrupt communications, transport/logistics, allowing the invaders to divide & conquer. Obviously this would be a very large push, and extremely difficult to pull off, with the distance from Myrtle Beach to Chicago being approximately the same as the distance Hitler's army travelled from Poland to the outskirts of Moscow (but slightly less than the distance they travelled from Romania to Stalingrad). b) Build defenses along the front ranges of the Appalachians to slow/block large scale American counter attacks from the Midwest and allow the invaders to move up the East Coast towards DC, Philadelphia, NYC, etc without having to worry too much about being outflanked. Newfoundland. Canada is basically counting on the US to defend them so its military facilities for defense aren't as strong. This represents somewhat of a weak point that an enemy could exploit to attack the US from the North. One option would be to take the island of Newfoundland. If the invader can seize the main airports by surprise, they can probably squash any resistance quite quickly, and it would be a bit difficult for the US to counter attack due to it being an island. So the invader could try to use it as a staging area for future landings onto the North American mainland. The US would still try to do various sneak attacks, using its airforce, navy and special forces to try to disrupt the enemy's attempts to establish a base of operations on the island. Since the island is very large, it would take too long for the invader to fully fortify the island against such air/water attacks, giving the Americans enough time to reinforce Canadian positions on the Gulf of St Lawrence. Therefore the enemy would have to make a quick landing on the mainland while simultaneously fending off attacks on their Newfoundland bases. From there work up the North Shore of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. However the North Shore makes the WWII Eastern Front look like a tropical vacation, and there's basically no infrastructure, so it would be very difficult for a large army to make progress quickly (with the goal of reaching Quebec City where the St Lawrence is easy to cross to continue South/West). More likely, small forces would have success taking positions in Labrador, taking over the iron rich mining districts there, and also allowing control of the Labrador Sea, which would be the main gateway to the Arctic Ocean for the Americans (the other would be the Bering Sea, but if Russia is hostile, this would be dangerous territory). If the Americans then lose control of the Arctic, the enemy could launch attacks on the Alaska oil fields, Hudson Bay hydroelectric damns, and even make their way up the Nelson and McKenzie Rivers into the American heartland.

@@abhignavijjapurapu209 Looking at the way things are playing out in Ukraine, and how roads are prone to ambushes because the Ukrainians are able to anticipate Russian movements along them, I now think that an invading army would have severe difficulty pushing along the North Shore of the Gulf of St Lawrence. If you make a landing from Newfoundland to Blanc Sablon, which is the part of the mainland that's closest to Newfoundland, you have almost 250 miles to go with no roads. There's a large stretch of shoreline with small communities only accessible by air and water (not rail or road). They also get 5-10ft more snow than Moscow, and have winters 10F colder, so as I said, (European) Russian winters are mild by comparison. If you land where there is a road (Kegaska, QC), then you have to travel 150 miles by ship from Newfoundland, instead of 15 miles from Newfounland to Blanc Sablon. And from Kegaska, you still have to travel 600 miles before you reach anywhere significant (ie Quebec City), all along one road with no alternate routes. Also, the present day crossing of the Saguenay River is done by car-ferry, so the enemy would likely have to take a detour up-river to where there are bridges (an extra 150 miles). Trudging through 900 miles of remote areas like this just to avoid heavy defenses is... a lot. Alternatively, you can take the Labrador route, where you will have a road the whole way, but it's 1400 miles instead of 900 miles. You get to capture some important hydro-electric dams and mines along the way though. Or you could try landing from Newfoundland to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. But that's a decently long ship journey (75 miles) so you'd need to control the waters fairly well if you want to supply your landing force reliably, and then you still have 800+ miles to go before reaching major cities like Boston or Montreal. Also, Newfoundland is 300 miles across, so just holding and controlling that is not entirely easy. Considering Russia is having a hard time managing supply lines of more than 100-150 miles, crossing an ocean, then crossing Newfoundland (250-400 miles), then crossing the Gulf of St Lawrence, then travelling 800-1000 miles through remote forests (whether it's New England/Maritimes or northern Quebec) before reaching the first major city... I'm not sure any enemy army could pull it off.

Just an observation about Brazil: since its independence, Brazil has never lost a single war. It's actually one of the few countries in history that can say that. It basically erased Paraguay off the map during the Paraguayan War, was able to supress every revolt that ever happened in the country, was an active allied force during WW II defeating the italians in the Battle of Monte Castello, won the Platine War against Argentina, the Uruguayan War against Uruguay and the Acre War against Bolivia, which ended up giving us what is now known as the State of Acre. In other words, even though Brazil is not known for its military force, whenever it was necessary, brazilians fought bravely and won.
@joaopedropeixoto8558
3 жыл бұрын
@Andrei Genrikhovich yes, but that's not what I said. I said Brazil never lost. The Cisplatine War ended in a peace agreement where neither of the parts involved got what they wanted. And that's how Uruguay exists. Had Brazil lost this war, Uruguay would be a part of Argentina.
@joaopedropeixoto8558
3 жыл бұрын
@Andrei Genrikhovich and keep in mind, by the time the Cisplatine War began, in 1825, Brazil didn't even have an organized army yet. The declaration of independence of Brazil happened in 1822, but it was only in 1824 and 1825 that other countries actually recognized it. So if you ask me, not losing a war under these circumstances might aswell be considered a win haha
@joaopedropeixoto8558
3 жыл бұрын
@Andrei Genrikhovich yeah, that's not how it works. The official result to the war is something called a "stalemate", when neither parties are declared victorious. Basically, a tie. In the Cisplatine War's case, Brazil wanted to keep possession of the Province of Cisplatine. Meanwhile, Argentina wanted it for them. The war stopped with a british mediation of the conflict, where both countries agreed to make a peace deal and declare the independence of Cisplatine, that later on became Uruguay. So no, Brazil didn't lose. As I said, if it had lost, Cisplatine would be a part of Argentina.
@joaopedropeixoto8558
3 жыл бұрын
@Andrei Genrikhovich again, you're wrong. A country loses a war when it officially declares their surrender. Neither Brazil nor Argentina did that. If someone loses, someone has to win. In the case of the Cisplatine War, who won it? Nobody. If nobody won, nobody lost. It's that simple. It's actually one google search away from you. Wikipedia has a complete list of every war Brazil was a part of and their results. Just look it up. Stalemate is not losing. Never was and never will be.
@joaopedropeixoto8558
3 жыл бұрын
@Andrei Genrikhovich in a war, if someone loses, someone else has to win. That's pretty obvious. It was a stalemate that ended in a peace agreement. You can have your own opinion, but the fact is Brazil has never officially lost a war. Not achieving the goal doesn't mean defeat. A surrender does. That's the official definition.

Finland does not belong to this list objectively. You have some point though there, vikings never conquered finnish tribes who where their neighbours, when whole Europe was in fear. Instead they invited them to their raids to east since they had similars language like in northern russia finno-ugric people. They guided the vikings helped with trading and fought with them. Since then Finland has not been independent state, but an eastern part of greater Sweden 700 years. It is a peaceloving country in bad geographical spot invaded several times by Russian empire and even in 18th century some 5% of its population was taken to slavery in russia. Finns as part of Sweden conquered also Moscow, Russian empire in 17th century, when Russian empire was weak. As independent state it has proven its tenacity in 1940's. It is only state affected by Ribbentropp-Molotov agreement, which did not fell into soviet hands after 2nd WW, but remained independent though losing great part of its land area. Finland did not take Marshall aid and paid all war penalty fees put on it by Sovjetunion. It is unique in this way. Finland has no great nature resources, so there is very little point to try to invade a country with unified peacefull population, who fights back and has big forests (70% of land area and 10% swamps) for guerilla warfare. Sweden is a country that belongs to this list without going to details. It has a better geographical advantage surrounded by sea and it is strategically important to nato.

Swiss were renown warriors, from 14th to 19th century. But they remain independent mostly because no great powers (France, Spanish Empire, Austrian Empire, Germany) would leave control of the Alpine roads from Italy to Germany and France to another power. So basically after their defeat against France at Marignan 1515 Switzerland never went to war, and did not had to resist invasions. When this balance was broken during Revolution, French invaded Switzerland in less than one year, despite fierce resistance.

The name for Vietnam in Chinese is 越南, which roughly translates to exceedingly south. But the name actually comes from when it was a province of the yue kingdom (越国), which was a vassal state of the Han dynasty if I’m not mistaken. The implication is it is the southern frontier of 越国 or yue kingdom vassal state. So at the time it was named, there were 2 degrees of separation between it anf the Han dynasty, but was still indirectly subservient to the Han dynasty. Tang Dynasty also has some rulership over it as well

Even as a non-Greek myself you are right to include the Byzantine Empire because without some minor elements (including treachery) the Byzantine Empire was (military and culturally) the Usa of its time, if they would have survived until 1600 they would have been at peace because at this time there was no more nomadic raiders and tribes to threathen them, but there was civilized nations which who you could make concetions and treaties, avoiding loosing 70% of your lands at once. Plus the Byzantine Empire would have not desire to expand into Christian lands and Kingdoms and would be at relatively peace, being a progressive state that could develop better firearms (they did invented flamethrower centuries before the german Wex) Athens and Constantinople would be places where all students wanted to study (Simeon of Bulgaria was educated there despite the tensions of the 2 empires)

I’m not sure the USA can be invaded, at all. Even if someone could get here without us seeing, then what? How do you resupply? How do you beat our military (and citizens) on our turf? How do you subjugate the most unnecessarily patriotic people on earth? How do you hold it? Blowing up the USA seems easier than taking it and I’m not sure it can be blown up either.

America would take millions of soldiers just to occupy let alone conquer. The population centers are spread out hundreds of miles on our only land borders. To the north is a sparsely populated nation with economic dependance on America as well as similar cultural and ethnic backgrounds, and the south is a massive desert that would be a logistical nightmare to cross with an army large enough to seriously challenge the US military. We control ocean trade and you would lose access to trade through the Americans because we control the Panama canal. The 3 largest air forces on the planet are all branches of the US military. We have a heavily armed population with racial prejudices and an ideological hatred towards the only power large enough to quell said population. And you would have to pass two mountain ranges to get to the populated coasts you’d need to conquer in order to actually dismantle the US government. Yeah, I’d say we take the cake

Personally, I believe that Switzerland is also a big contender for this list, given the fact that pretty much every man in the country has a gun and military training, and they also have very good military technology and are basically a geographic fortress due to the Alps. The only downside is that the country is relatively small.
