@jerrygoldfarb7739 Barry had a good line. That narrative is old and tired and just flat out ain't even close to true. He had at least 2 probowlers almost his entire career with a 3rd probowler for a couple years. He also had Herman Moore who was an all-time great receiver. Emmitts line was no doubt great but there's 3 things that make that argument dumb. 1) he had 2 rushing titles before that line was great. 2) when Emmitt held out after the 1st superbowl the Cowboys went 0-2 and couldn't run the ball for shit. Emmitt comes back and they finish 12-2 with Emmitt leading the league in rushing again even after missing 2 games and he goes on to be the superbowl mvp. 3) the line was only great for a max of 4 years, after that drugs, injuries, and a car wreck decimated that line. You saying the All-time rushing champ in the regular and post season and TD champ in regular and post season isn't even top 5 shows you know absolutely nothing about football. If the line was as good as people claim when the backups got their chance they would have at least looked as good as Emmitt. Emmitt is the best back in football history and his stats and wins back that up.
@danmccarthy3762
Жыл бұрын
@bigred9991 Lions had Brett Perriman too. Herman Moore and Brett became the first duo with 100 catches in the same season. And they had Morton as a 3rd WR who became a pro bowler. I agree the narrative of Barry had no o line is old for sure. He wasn’t on a bad team. Lions had a good team in the late 90’s and a top offense. Their defense killed em. If they had a better D Lions would have been scary

Someone so fast who can change direction and lose no momentum? Amazing. The incredible timing of his cuts and ability to take angles against defenders was extraordinary. When he hit open field? GONE! Add to that the protective gear he used and he looked like ROBO-RUNNING BACK!

I compare by saying, "Well, if they were THEN, they would not have lasted 3 years." Remember, they would not have had all the nutritional, training, medical, and steroid advantages that they have available today, not to mention much shorter seasons then. And they did not have all the TV and referee time outs as the game has today. 100 yards per game average over 9 years. 5.2 yards every time he got the ball. Never be equaled.

But Halas said that the greatest ballplayer who ever lived or ever will live was Jim Thorpe: greatest running back, greatest passer, greatest punter, greatest place kicker, greatest linebacker, greatest defensive backfield, greatest pass interference. Halas said it would never be surpassed. For one thing Thorpe was bigger than listed; about 6’1” 212-215. He was the greatest Olympian ever with a pentathlon and a decathlon both. Aside from being a tough nasty Indian warrior, he was a proud and serious competitor. He also played for the Giants and Reds. That's a whopping 83 more yards per game than Jim Brown and 80 more than Sanders. None of the other guys on this list even came close. TD was the greatest playoff running back in NFL history, and it's not even close. In the four years he played before he blew out his knee, he rushed for over 6400 yards and added 1140 yards in the playoffs. 1140 yards in eight playoff games. NOBODY else ever came close to that. Plus league MVP, Super Bowl MVP, two rings, Offensive Player of the year twice, and top three for league MVP three times. Sorry, Jim Brown was the greatest runner of all time. Defenses were stacked against him, yet he succeeded. Obviously, you never watched him live, which is the reason that you have not ranked him #1.

Ok, if this list is based completely based on how many yards one gets. Ok. Possible, but seriously at worst Barry Sanders is #2, he easily could have played at least another 3 to 4 or more years, Now Jim Brown is at the very worst, #1. No question he had five more high level years, He got bored.

I totally disagree with this list, no disrespect to the players on this list but you left out 3 amazing backs. Earl Campbell, and come on no Bo Jackson who hands down would have been the best if not for his injury. And last but not least you lost credit and told on yourself by only mentioning O.J Simpson once but failing to add him to this list, everyone knows about his off the field issues, but if not for that people would still give him his recognition. And because of his off the field issues he’s the forgotten one. Which makes this list trash!

Not sure how bad your maths is but adding 3 to 10 makes 13. It's a list of 10, someone's opinion. You can't just keep adding names and also... 'but if not for that' - you mean murder? If not for that minor mishap he'd be a stand up guy? Weird.

Don't believe Tony should even be on the list. Emmitt is prolly ranked to high do to the great O line he ran behind though no fault of his own. Tough list to put together. As a packer fan to play Walter 2 times a year then Barry 2 times a year was tough on me lol. I was in attendance when the Pack beat the Lions in a playoff game and held Barry to -1 yards rushing which was very satisfying :)

I'd say that this is exactly what i would have predicted a computer to say...... but anybody who knows football, or any sport for that matter, knows there is a lot more than stats...... if i were to pick a dream team today, no one but Barry Sanders is going to start.... and i would have Walter Payton on the ready..... Even an old Cowboy fan like me knows that Emmitt ran behind one of the best O-lines in NFL history and to rate him #1 is a travesty.... he would barely make my top-ten of "who do i want on the field?" .... and not their stats! The building of that line was the work of Jimmy Johnson, and sure 'nuf, as soon as he left, that line started deteriorating thanks to "any ol' college coach"..... hmmmm... people i'd rather have than Emmitt on the field..... Deuce Vaughn! Jim Brown, Eric Dickerson, Walter and Barry, Earl Campbell, OJ Simson, AP, Tony D, Faulk.... i know i missed a couple but, given the same O-line, even Deuce could do better......

Punishing the defense. Campbell and Jim Brown on top. Maybe there was also Bronco Nagurski and Marion Motley. Campbell was the only back penalized for hitting defenders. Outrunning people is nice but knocking them down, that's football.

He had it all. Great speed. Elusiveness. Change of direction to defy physics. Great receiver. Great hands. Picked up the blitz like no other. And was statistically the best red zone runner of all time. My all time team would have Marcus at tailback/flanker with Jim Brown at full back. Barry Sanders comes in when Allen plays in the slot.

@@mikilynne4558 You’re right. Allen was so versatile. He could run east/west eluding tacklers, run north/south up the gut at the goal line, play FB, and even throw the ball. Why him and Al Davis had problems, idk…. He could’ve been traded for some high draft picks. I’m a 49er fan, and the Niner and Raider fans can clash at times lol. That said, IMO, if you don’t recognize the talent Marcus had on the field, then you’re not a true football fan.
