The Battle of Airds Moss took place on 22 July 1680 after a local laird had betrayed the whereabouts of the Rev Richard Cameron and 60 of his Covenanter followers to Sir Andrew Bruce of Earlshill and the 120 Dragoons under his command.
During the 15 minute battle 26 Dragoons were killed and nine Covenanters, including Camerons brother. Many others were able to escape across the bog however five wounded were captured and two died shortly after, the final three being executed in Edinburgh.
Camerons head and hands were removed and paraded through the Edinburgh streets whilst his remains and the bodies of the other eight were buried on the battlefield where a monument was erected, replaced in 1832 by the present memorial with Cameron's grave and gravestone lying next to it.
The Cameronians continued to fight the king until the end of the 'Killing Times' when their fighting spirit was recognised by many accepting the invitation to enrol in the British Army as the 'Cameronans' with their religious traditions accepted and respected.
