The seventeenth of May is a wonderful day, unlike any other. Whereas most countries that have days of celebration for their nation use military parades, Norway's parades are led - by the children and the youth. Adults are expected to take a back seat.
But it is a indeed a wonderful day, where we leave our political differences aside, and focus on being Norwegian. The seventeenth of May celebrates our Norwegian Constitution, the "Grunnlov". This Law above every other law guarantees that fundamental rights cannot be taken away or changed without two successive parliaments deciding to do so.
The Constitution is a necessary safeguard. Sadly, the Pandemic Treaty that Norway might sign next week... could (in practice) suspend the Norwegian Constitution should the World Health Organisation decide there is a pandemic. You should be opposed to this, and it is a matter of grave concern that that could happen.
Anyone who objects that this is worrying unnecessarily, and that I am overdoing it... should note that the United Kingdom will NOT be signing this accord for precisely the reasons I am worrying about.
