Dr Conor Mulvagh is Lecturer in Irish History with special responsibility for the Decade of Commemorations. He is lead organiser on several universitiy conferences and events connected with commemorations and is also writing a history of UCD during the Irish revolution. He is delighted to contribute to the work of the committee.
Currently, Conor is researching a history of UCD during the Irish Revolution. His PhD (UCD, 2012) investigated the work and collective behaviour of Irish Nationalist MPs at Westminster between 1900 and 1918 and was funded by the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences. This is currently being prepared for publication as a monograph.
He has previously lectured on the Irish revolution, the Northern Irish Troubles, and Irish Studies at UCD as well as having worked on the Royal Irish Academy’s Documents on Irish Foreign Policy project (2013). He holds an MPhil in modern Irish history from TCD (2007) and undertook a bursary with the Oireachtas Library and Research Service in 2012 examining pamphlet collection of the Chief Secretary of Ireland now held in Leinster House. He is a history and policy editor and contributor to HistoryHub.ie.
The reading was filmed in front of the Kevin Barry Window, commemorating the life of Kevin Barry, an IRA volunteer who was executed by the British Army during the War of Independence. 76 years after its original installation in Earlsfort Terrace it was relocated to the UCD Belfield Campus.
Kevin Barry was a first year medical student at University College Dublin when he was arrested by the British Army during the War of Independence for his part in an ambush on a British army vehicle in which three British soldiers were shot. He was subsequently charged with murder, and executed by hanging in 1920. He was 18 years old.
The Kevin Barry Memorial Window depicts images of prominent people and events associated with the Irish nationalist struggle.
The cultural resonance of the window is emphasised by its links with the University and the importance of Kevin Barry’s association with UCD is shown by the inclusion of the UCD crest at his feet.
