Wow people really struggle with perspective in this song. Matty is singing about the contradiction of religion, not his own personal beliefs. The song shows that believing can be like searching for planes in the sea, wrong and yet compelling, comforting and yet suffocating. It doesn't mean he suddenly believes in Jesus; it means he can empathise with those who do.

To me personally, this song is about the conflict between sexuality and faith. This is evidenced by the verses where they talk about being in love with someone of the same sex. Additionally, the song is ultimately about how Matty wishes he could change his beliefs to believe in God. He's said in the past that he envies those of us who believe, because they have something to hope for and have faith in, while he doesn't. The chorus is the best part of the song not simply because of the instrumentation and creative use of electronics, but because the lyrics are almost all in metaphor. The "fortunately I believe, Lucky me" is entirely sarcastic. "Searching for planes in the sea, now that's irony" is a metaphor for looking for God on the Earth. It's ironic to look for higher beings on a lesser plain. "Soil just needs water to be, and a seed. So if we turn into a tree, can I be the leaves?" Matty is saying he wishes he could change with this line. He wants to be able to grow from his old self, but he didn't have God there to help him as he does for believers so Matty wasn't able to make the full season change like the leaves can. He envies leaves because of their ability to change. At least this is what I gather from all of this.

In Dante's Inferno the souls of those who commit suicide become trees in Hell. Maybe Matty means that, especially when you consider how homosexuals are persecuted by their own 'faith'. People of faith are very judgemental aren't they?

@@PWMoze We are not judgemental, this is a fallen world and all around you are suggestions, mind altering hidden symbolism that influences you in a bad way, we all have the truth in our heart and we know what is good but most of the time we dont do it, because we love ourselfs more then God, and God showed that he loved us more then himself by dying on that cross and giving his pure blood. So with that you can be changed by him, it's not that God leaves out annybody, he just waits for you to ask, to be honest. And most dont want to believe and change that is why they never honestly ask or knock on the door. Act of sodomy isnt about love, it's bodily sensual lustfull behaviour. The law is gradually revialed in the Bible and holyness is not achieved with instinctfull behaviour. The mainstream will say to you do what you want, you wer born like this, but the harsh truth is you were not born to take drugs and have gay sex, you were born here to realise your state of mind and then realise what you want, do you want sensuality, sex, extazy, chaos or self control, peace, and a purpose of fulfilling your fullest potential and geting everlasting life, the ones who choose the other get darkness, if you will not repent you will perish, it's harsh but it's true! i

@@xgorexgarcia8555 Please explain how one becomes gay. I'm anxiously waiting to hear. Save your breath if you're going to tell me that my sexual preference is a choice! Using that logic, straight people then obviously CHOOSE to be straight. That would mean you (yes, I'm referring to you, personally) consciously make an effort to be attracted to and fall in love with the opposite gender. But you could just as easily go the other way? Do you become sexually aroused with the opposite sex because you choose to consciously tell your brain, heart, and hormones to take action? No? I didn't think so. Is it just as easy for you to fall in love with the same gender as the opposite gender? No? I didn't think so. So much so that you would want to share that love in a caring and expressive physical/sexual relationship? No? I didn't think so. If you are truly straight, it probably disgusts you to even imagine a gay relationship. It might even make your skin crawl. At the very least, you have zero, zilch, nodda sexual interest in the same gender. Welcome to my world as it pertains to the opposite sex... z-e-r-o interest. I live lines 7 and 8 of these lyrics every freaking day. So please, explain how I was made gay! Maybe with your masterful help, I can cure myself of this disease. Gosh, life must be easy when you're straight. If I could only choose to be! Damn.

the part of this song that always hits me like a ton of bricks (especially with Phoebe singing) is "i'm in love with a girl next door. her name's claire." it's something about the way "claire" is listed BY NAME. there's power in a name, and in comparison to the opening lyrics "i'm in love with a boy next door..." where the boy isn't specifically named. that part is more passive and more directly about how religion oppresses non-straight, non-cis people. Phoebe's part has a more active speaker who shows that the details of her situation are important to her by calling Claire by her name instead of only calling her "the girl next door." Phoebe's part also implies that she and claire are friends who actually spend time together, and i feel like that is part of the desperation and yearning because the speaker likely has romantic and sexual feelings and desires geared towards claire that she has to hide the whole time they're together. i also feel that there are implications of sex guilt that the speaker has surrounding her thoughts of claire when she masturbates. maybe i'm looking too deep into this particular section, but it really just stands out to me. 💚

I literally cried listening to this Matty aka Matt Healy has a profound intellectual use of vocabulary in The 1975s songs this is why I've been a fan of him and The 1975 is a favorite band of mine for years now.

What a beautiful song! The singles so far were amazing and each one has a diffferent element and vibe which I personally love about albums. Notes will for sure be a serious competitor for A Brief Inquiry.
