RE: API outboard gear. In your recent livestream, you mentioned that the op amps go bad on a regular basis. Do you have an estimation of how many hours of use before one goes out? Does this apply to all API outboard (preamps, 500 series EQ, 2500+, and 5500)? And how difficult/expensive is it to get replacement op amps from API, assuming they’ll allow you to do the repair yourself? I’m not sitting here speculating that they have shotty QC. I would surmise that the hot rodded nature of the circuit that gives us that tone, comes from an intentionally unstable circuit (like guitar amps)? Necessary headache, so to speak.
@mixbustv
3 жыл бұрын
No they don't have shitty QC, API is still top 3 brands in history, but, it's speculated that there could be a way to make the opamps not blow up.. Actually, many people replace them with equivalent (in sound and construction) that don't blow up. It's not a matter of hours, well, it is but it's a bit random and it changes for every unit depending how crammed the insides are (and API packs A LOT of things in 1 unit), and yes it goes for every product, they all have the same opamps. I replaced mine, I did replace mine in the past with others and they never blew up again. Changing is a simple swap, you pull one out, put the new one in, no soldering no anything, they're plug and play

The "american" part is the internal sidechain circuit, which as stated in the video, is a big part of that comp. The xformer is also most likely based on its opamps

Hello David, I have been watching your videos for some time, you have some great stuff on them. I have a question for you, I did try your suggestion for putting on the (2bus) or Mix Bus, before starting your mix. I did try it and I was unsure if my plug-in were working. So I had them checked and they are or OK ! I might need to up date them soon or later the ones that aren't current on WAVES. Would you also say that one should and EQ as well before beginning their mix on the mix bus as well ? Just looking for your insight on this matter. Because I just use my Slates console plugin on my tracks befor mixing as well as gain staging. What's your take on this.?
@mixbustv
3 жыл бұрын
I don't like 2bus eq, or better, I don't mix into an eq to begin with. I usually have API 5500 or Drawmer 1974 on my 2bus (and the eq on the Fusion) but I turn either of those on when I'm about 80% or more done. I don't see the point of mixing into an eq from the beginning, it defeats the purpose of having a flat (or as close as possible) monitoring system.

So the lifted frequency is less compressed or more compressed ?🤔
@mixbustv
3 жыл бұрын
With knock engaged the detector sees a vari-slope, less lows more mids/highs, you pick the corner frequency by selecting it on the lift; this is internal sidechain it doesn't affect what is compressed as this is a wideband compressor, when it compresses it compresses everything, but it gets trigger by what it sees in the detector, so less by the lows and more by the mids/high. In addition, the selected frequency gets boosted (just like an eq)
