I’ve still got my Kabar from my military service and it’s a great knife for lots of things. My Leatherman Wave is nearly worn out from years of use and abuse. One more knife that I use very regularly is a small Rapala filet knife with a 4” blade. It’s too light for heavy use but it gives me much better control for detail work. With those 3 I feel pretty confident that I can handle almost any situation, including wrassling Grizzeldy bars! Blessings!

The Leatherman multitool is always a great choice as is the K-Bar. Although I have both my every day choice for a general purpose fixed blade is the Gerber Strongarm. I use the Mora Black for bushcraft and the Ontario SP53 “BOLO” for a machete/camp knife. Probably more info than you wanted but my point is that there are a lot of great knives out there for less than $100 that will serve you well even under severe conditions. As I understand it, the design you see when holding the K-Bar is the result of interviews with survivors of knife fights, generally WW1 vets. It is a fighting/survival knife.

I've got a Benchmade folder, and my EDC Buck Bantam... KaBar is great and/or a Kukri is very versatile! I believe whether an Opinel or Sebenza or Mora or leatherman, whatever works during time of duress or survival as a go to is the best survival knife, as it is the only knife you might have with you on hand... Not saying to skimp on quality, just be ready when that certain stuff hits the fan, your wit and whatever you have on you will be your best equipment at that moment. Agree totally on quality... Excellent video as it is kept simple as well, Beautiful woman!

Another great reco vid for knives Sis. Crysta! I am a collector and have too many knives :) What I would recommend is to have yet another category of knives on top of the 2 you mentioned... Add a tactical knife that is easy for conceal carry that has an Assisted spring-action open and fear-instilling into the intruders or enemy just by the mere sight of it... such as a MicroTech Hawk/Eagle/Kestrel automatic would serve as both as a great repellent to attacker and is practical to use as well. I know it from a former Marine who backed off after he saw the mere sight of this.
@dieterhonchied5112

Just to clarify what I'm suggesting in brief: I'm not talking about a certain brand name is better than another, but a category of useful knives. I agree with the video's recommendation fully that touched on the 2 categories of knives needed. The Tactical Ka-Bar knife is great, but you can't carry it with you everywhere as it is a bit big. However, a tactical concealable knife that also serves as a great self-defense is another need that I'm suggesting that is indispensable, because as they say, "The knife you have is the knife you have WITH YOU"... i.e. one you can carry with you everywhere. The Leatherman you can carry with you, but we also need a tactical one that we can carry with us as well, right? :) Definitely, the Ka-Bar serves as another category of knives we need also: Tactical knives that are bigger, stronger and fit for tougher jobs.

Kabars are solid. I have their BK9 which is a super solid large survival knife, and I really like it. When I suggest knives to people I frequently recommend Cold Steel knives as well. They tend to be fairly no frills but they are made well with hard use in mind, and are not expensive for what you get. The SRK is one example of theirs. Good video. And great hair.

Interesting video. I carry an M9 Bayonet which can also be used to cut through wire because of it's sheath and I can mount it on a rifle. In the pouch of my M9 I have my Leatherman Super Tool 300 along with some bits. The back of the sheath there is a built in sharpening stone which can come in handy. I like the Kabar but find that the M9 Bayonet is more useful and the ST300 has more tools than any other leatherman except the Surge but it's lighter and I like how all the tools are on the inside which is less likely to rust.

👍 Nice review of these tools. I agree with you about multitools. Although I prefer the Victorinox Spirit X because tools can be accessed without opening the pliers, same quality as Leatherman. The problem with the KaBar “fighting knife” is that when the steel reduces from blade width to tang width it is done with right angles instead of being radiused which weakens the knife at that point. I believe the Buck 119 is a better choice if you want a tactical blade.

Might I offer up a thought. For those looking for a budget knife, (Kabar can be costly) check out a Elk Ridge knife. I have had mine for 2 years now and I have not been the nicest to it. Good choices. Own both. The Kabar makes for a good tactical knife for survival. The one weakness with kabar is that blades have been known to break while batoning. For all round survival redundancy is key. The knife that will do the most and last the longest under heavy use would be my first choice, but, to each their own. Love your channel. Keep it up.

It it refreshing to me to see a devout Christian who realizes there just may come a time where we will need to defend ourselves or families. Far too many people I know simply say, "Oh, the LORD will take care of me." Don't get me wrong. NOTHING surpasses our Heavenly Father's protection. But I sincerely believe we are expected to do some of the work ourselves. I have owned my Gerber multi-tool for over 25 years now, and I, personally, would choose a different 2nd knife than a KaBar, but that's just me. I truly appreciate your informative videos. You are a Blessing to many. David

Great channel, Ma'am! Looking forward to getting into your food videos! As for knives, cannot argue with either choice. The Leatherman (just about any flavor) is a great tool. The Ka-Bar is definitely a good knife as well, and I have one that looks identical to yours. I am in the camp, however, that a knife is a very last ditch weapon of choice as knife fighting is a very hard and complicated thing to master, much less be somewhat adept at. Therefore, to me, some form of bushcraft knife would be the best fixed blade option. The bushcraft designs are usually much easier to sharpen due to blade geometry, stronger due to a full tang design (vs the hidden full tang of the Ka-Bar) and easier to handle for survival tasks, etc. In the end, it does get down to personal taste and more importantly, what the intended use is of the tool. Keep it up!!

You are welcome! I tend to lean toward custom knife makers, of which there are many, and that population is growing rapidly. They may cost more but are often much better made using better steels and handle materials (and often sheaths). I also like supporting a small business owner who is trying to make a go of it in a very competitive (and saturated) market. There are some great makers such as Bark River (I have one so speak from experience), Matthew Lesniewski, Griggs Knives, Dry Creek Forge, and Jacklore (one of my favorite makers I follow), to name a few. Another newer maker is Apodaca Customs LLC in NM. His prices are VERY reasonable, especially considering the excellent sheaths they come with! I'll probably add one of his knives to my kit one day but with a satin finish (he likes bright polished as a standard). Good kid from all accounts. For those into fighting knives (though they also make other types), Half Face Blades and Rustic Knives are two veteran-owned companies with some BEAUTIFUL work being done. I also REALLY like Liam Hoffman (Blacksmithing). He specializes in axes but also makes some beautiful knives. For mass produced, both Spyderco and Emerson make quality bushcraft blades, though their prices are in the custom knife price range. There are way too many folks out there who will say "I can buy 10 cheap knives for the price of 1 custom knife!" My response, what is your life worth? When it comes to survival, some things shouldn't be skimped on... They’ll spend $600 on a smartphone but not save for a quality knife. For those who just don't have the funds, there are some good mass produced bushcraft knives that have fared well in reviews. I’ve seen some good reviews on Schrade’s new line of knives which are VERY affordable and hold up well for the price. Another affordable knife company with good reviews is Condor with the Kephart and Bushlore knives fitting the bill. Both knives are less than $50 and with some sharpening, have fared very well. Since I brought up axes, every homestead needs a solid axe! While the Gransfors Bruks axes are among the best, a solid American made vintage head with a properly sharpened bit and properly hung on a solid American hickory handle will last a lifetime if well cared for. Sorry for the novel but had a lot to say! Best to you and yours and God bless! Dave

Letherman is very trusted. The last version of the Gerber suspension was close enough, although the scissors were not up to snuff. However if you are financially challenged, you probably have the time to learn to tell the difference and find the older version. The newer version just isn't up to snuff and you can't trust it. The Marine K-bar is the best seller, but I prefer the K-bar BK-7. It doesn't have the foil for knife fighting, but you can baton wood with it. It's the largest you'd want a combat capable knife, and having on the larger side helps for batoning. It has full tang and not the rats tail of the marine version, and that is why you can baton with it. What you do is wrap it with hockey tape for grip. The BK-2 is quite popular in combat zones. It ha been used for a step to get over a tall walls. It is much shorter(5 1/4"), but wider than a BK-7. It is one of the most durable knives ever made. at 0.25" thick. K-bar uses 1095 Cro-Van or 1095CV and it is 1095 with the addition of small amounts of Chrome, Vanadium, and smaller amounts of Nickel and Moly. This makes a tool grade steel that holds its edge better without chipping. If you don't live on an ocean coast this is the ideal metal. Needing stainless creates an issue as nobody can find something better. AUS-8A was the goto when it was made in Japan, but you will need to find an older knife. 1095CV will rust, so you will need to care for it. Mineral oil is how you protect a rustable blade. It is food safe and nobody has an allergy to it. Mineral oil can preserve eggs for 9 months so long as they are kept under 50 degrees. You can protect yourself from wind and frostbite. Mineral oil can be used to make a candle or a few drops on a cotton ball can start a fire. kzitem.info/news/bejne/zICsk6KDmHOlrH4 Squeaky hinges and squeaky floors that could give away your position in a home invasion and mineral oil can cure that. A popular wood conditioner is just mineral oil with lemon smell. Baby oil is non-food grade mineral oil with fragrance. Women can remove makeup with it and it can remove adhesive. It can be consumed for constipation as to its official use.

A survival knife is the knife you have on you when you get lost while hunting or separated from your party or if it is a bug out situation These are kind of planned situations. But what if you are on a trip somewhere & you run out of gas or you brake down in the middle of nowhere & you forgot your K-bar or your leatherman & all you have is your box cutter or your little pen knife? That knife would be your survival knife . It would be more than ideal to be carrying your leatherman everywhere you go because of it's multi-functional design. Survival happens when you least expect it, so your best bet is to always be prepared, this is why I always carry a medium to large folding knife. Can you "baton" (beat on it to split wood) with it? No! I would never "baton" with a knife that I am trying to survive with or one that I intend not to brake. Even full tang knives can brake if you beat on it, which is not a good survival strategy. Knives are not designed to take the place of an ax or a hatchet. Also I was a Marine & I really like the design of the K-bar..... And the Air Force survival knife..... And other collectible knives & they were great for their time, but there are plenty of full tang knives out there that are very tough & adequate for hunting & bug out purposes, like Schrade, Buck, Gerber, Kershaw & Condor that are reasonably priced. Keep doing what you are doing & God bless you.

Retired librarian here, odd bits of information: After Roman Empire fell repeated attempts were made to revive, including use of Roman Army short sword. Originally did not have a "blood groove" which was added. Turned out short sword was poor weapon, useful mostly in battle for beating people. Bronze sword of course, would not hold an edge very long. However it was GREAT for bushcraft. Making camp, setting up and improving tactical positions, then building enforcements for positions once won. What made the Roman Army so successful was the fact that it had a tight line of command and successful supply line. Oh, and regularly, brilliant generals whose names still echo thru history.

The Kabar combat knife made today is the same knife made during WW-2. Compressed leather handle, full tang blade hooked to a end pommel. The hilt guard has an 8° bend to assist in defecting opposing knife strikes. And a blood groove. There are four stamps available for whichever military service you want. The USMC stamp on the blade with an eagle globe and anchor and USMC on the sheath. The US Army stamp on the blade with an American eagle and US Army on the sheath. The Navy model has a USN stamp on the blade and a oblique American eagle with US Navy on the sheath. The US Coast Guard has USCG on the blade with a rescue ring and crossed oars with USCG on the sheath. Unfortunately Kabar doesn't make an US Air Force model. Kabar claims copyright problems. The US Government does not copyright any logos used in any government agency. I wish they would make a Air Force stamped model. I have a Kabar with the US Army stamp. Other knives are the Gerber MK-2 knife and the Ontario SP-8 matchet knife. All three have a specific purpose so I need all three. The Kabar even helped me encourage a thief to seek out a new endeavor in life. Hope he got the hint.

The KABAR only has a full rat tail tang. Do yourself a favor and get yourself a ESEE knife. ESEE knives have a complete full tang and they come with a unconditional lifetime warranty.

Nobody in possession of a Kabar has any reason to feel undergunned. The MilSpec on these fine blades insist on them being able to sustain the weight of a soldier (160-180 lbs. with 1" of the blade jammed into a firm hold (tree or crevice). There are millions of these knives left over from the 2nd World War, Korea, & Viet Nam that have gone on to do yeoman's duty in Desert Storm and all the other bad times and places. They will probably still be useful in a hundred years and will always be equal to any task.

I cannot find any fault in your choices. Leatherman is better than Gerber ( Gerber steel is too hard and brittle, in my opinion) And the K-Bar. Never use your K-Bar as a pry bar, that's a great way to snap it in half. But for 90% of camping chores, you are good to go. (And...in an emergency, 7 and a half inches of steel strategically placed into an attacker's chest will resolve the situation)

Good choice on company Ka-Bar, but why not go with the knife made by Ka-Bar for survival & bushcraft? Check out the two Becker knives - by Ka-Bar. Much better made for survival and bushcraft. Thicker, full tang blade, easy to sharpen, and is tough.

the knife that I've found to be best for me is the one that fits my hand, that I can use with accuracy & that serves the purpose for which it's called. my mora companion has processed many rabbits, chickens, ducks & a turkey for me with ease & without injury. i'm not ganna ask it to baton wood any more than i'm ganna ask my ax to help me carve a bowl. KBars are no doubt great knives but they're too big & heavy for me so the best knife is the one that works for you & your needs. no?

I won't buy leatherman products anymore!! Most are now made in CHINA!! High end Gerber multitools are still made in the USA. The Gerber multitools are very popular in Afghanistan. They stand up to multiple tours! Plus they have an attachment for screwdriver bits. You are much more likely to find these in a soldier's kit. They make an EOD version that us also very popular. The Swiss Army knife with the Spyderco style thumb opening and locking main blade is a great everyday tool. And a Spyderco Endura, Delica or a Police with a combination edge are a must for everyday carry!! I always have one in my back pocket. TOPS knives are tier one quality and made in the USA. You'll find them at "Tip of the Spear" units.

The Gerber suspension(made in China) was the first multi tool I know of to even be comparable to a leatherman. Not as good, but close enough to be comparable, however Gerber updated it and it is no longer comparable. Both Letherman and K-bar are made in America. Accessories and sheaths are made in China.

It is unfortunate that your history of the Kabar hurts an otherwise decent video. A short Google search would have shown that Camillus Cutlery developed the knife in conjunction with the US Army in 1942. (Kabar's claims to the contrary are lies). The Kabar is a decent knife, but the history you gave it was conflated. The incident about killing a bear had nothing to do with the USMC fighting knife. Anyway, many people feel the same as you, and that is fine. For me, the rat tang, huge guards, and obtuse sabre grind make this knife next to useless for me. Also, it isn't a "blood groove" - it is a fuller. The stories about it being there because of 'suction' are childish nonsense. It is there to make the blade lighter and stiffer.

Bryan Marsh she never said the legends she had heard were true, just legends she had heard. And LOTS of folks misunderstand what a 'blood groove' is which from a physics standpoint simply makes it easier to remove a killing knife when its pierced bone.
