The Ascent is actually pretty decent. With the amount of people/dev team to the level of detail and love invested into the game ratio being quite impressive. This is the dedication and drive we needed to see in Cyberpunk - at least the world of the Ascent is cyberpunky enough to soothe my longing for a future-set game that doesn't suck schlong.

Yeah! The difficulty scaling was a bit hit & miss and the quest tracking was borked at times, but in general The Ascent was pretty good. I hope the devs keep exploring that universe.

It is a rather unfortunate story honestly. The game is a bit buggy in singleplayer and local Co-op, but in online co-op the "bit" flies through the closed window, lands on the road 8 stories down, is ran over by a semi, and is replaced by a crapton. It crashes every 10 minutes or so, along with a plethora of delightful other things. That being said, it is a beautiful game. The unfortunate part, is that most of the main people that had worked on it have left the company, and there will probably be no more bugfixes in the future. Which makes me quite sad.

Still not sure exactly what Yahtz has against Inscryption…yeah there's a meta-game and an ARG attached, but the game itself is still perfectly playable, unique, atmospheric, and fun just as a self-contained experience. Granted, if you play it that way, the Lucky Carder character damages the immersion, but it's still a fun game to play, one with passion and creativity and everything Yahtzee says games lack nowadays. I honestly expected him to gush about it when I first saw it, so his mostly-silent vendetta against it puzzles me…

Sad to hear Solar Ash didn't get a ton of love, I liked it but it does have some pretty big weaknesses. Of all the characters, Rey definitely has the weakest but it doesn't pull off the "your particular story doesn't matter" approach so it ends up just feeling a bit hollow.

The ascent had so much potential. My playthrough didn't have all of the bugs other people did, but a lot didn't feel fleshed out quest-wise. That said, the environment is so good it makes me a little mad. There's so much going on, so much to see, it all makes sense and feels real while simultaneously feeling like a fever dream. The combat is solid, and progression actually makes you feel powerful. Haven was one of my favorite games of the year. The music was good enough for me to favorite on Spotify and listen to on occasion, the combat wasn't that bad, the survival crafting stuff makes sense since the game is legit about surviving on a remote planet to repair your spaceship. The overarching story is simple and fantastic. They actually do some great storytelling, and you can pick out a few spots of foreshadowing if you pay attention. I actually ended up being so invested that I treated the game like Subnautica, carefully preparing food days in advance and maxing out my healing and combat items ASAP. Guess what? It payed off, with a boss that came out of nowhere and almost crushed me. There's only one boss that will truly test you, and I've seen some reviews that complain about it, but it's a completionist secret boss.

story is completely shallow and there's basically no satisfying payoff to anything major that happens. gameplay is passible if often kind of dull and predicable. some nice moments, but overall lacking. good for a mindless go on the switch or something on a big sale, the music and art are incredible. otherwise not really worth the time.

Haven is interesting because it is uncommon for video games to have a legit husband and wife be the main characters and aren't acting like they came straight from high school. They've been married for years and they have common arguments like everyday couples do. But they are both willing to sacrifice their livelihood for each other to not end up in prison or dead.
@newsystembad

I'm really glad he talked about Haven, even if only in a post-year roundup. I kinda fell in love with the game, to be honest. Besides there being precious few games that are actually _about_ a relationship (and not just the chase up to when the couple get together), there's also not a lot of romance stories that cast a brown guy as the male romantic lead. Really great game all around. I played through it once myself, now I need to drag my girlfriend into playing with me. XD

My wife and I have been doing a sort of Bechdel test on movies looking for stories that center on a stable husband and wife couple adventuring together since that aspect was jettisoned from the Valerion movie. Yahtzee is a prime example of how important it is to "know" your critics. I've hardly heard of this game "Haven" but as soon as Yahtz mentioned it has "awful hybrid turn-based and real-time combat" I knew I had to go look it up because I actually love that shit.

Best review of Doctor Who: Edge of Reality on the whole web. Masterpiece. 👏🏻😂 Honestly why didn’t TT and LEGO just expand upon their Dimensions Level Pack and make a full blown LEGO Doctor Who game? It was the best love letter to the show any video game has made.

@@vKuya See, for me Zesteria and Berseria were the downward slope. I *will* say Berseria's combat was fluid as heck and enjoyable, but the story wasn't doing it for me. The first 10-15% was great, but the next 80% was basically nobody having any character development except Eleanor. Velvet especially was very bland. She had 2 emotions: "I must get revenge" and "I must protect little brother." If it was outside that scope, Velvet didn't give a shit. If I had to make recommendations based on my taste, I'd say Abyss, Vesperia, Xillia, and Symphonia were among the most memorable high points.

Well his review still stands. The remake made the combat not shit, added the mermaid and ending E. Not sure it was worth making a new review over. It's just unfortunate he didnt know about the multiple endings the first time, but knowing him he would absolutely bash the fact that you have to replay the game multiple times and it barely changes (at least compared to Automata)

Tales of Arise is one game that in spite of being anime as balls I really liked because it explored genuinely interesting issues and interpersonal relationships in heartfelt ways. Tales is generally pretty good on that in spite of being anime as balls, especially recently. I say "generally" cause Zestiria exists.
@Horvath_Gabor

"Explored genuinely interesting issues and interpersonal relationships in heartfelt ways" describes 90% of JRPGs, it's just that most people, including Yathzee, have some kind of weird preconceived notion about all of them being dumb compared to the "real" CRPGs and never really give them the attention they deserve. It took Yathzee over a decade to even engage with the Persona games, and even then, it sounds like he felt ashamed in finding them actually really good.

@@Horvath_Gabor The anime aesthetic has amassed a number of negative attributes that might not always translate to the games in this style, but sure as hell are a staple of it. You kinda need to know what to pick from the lot, so someone without much experience is just going to treat them all the same.
@Horvath_Gabor

@@beo3828 The issue is that the same goes for many other genres as well, and those don't get this kind of instant, no-second-look-given dismissal. JRPGs, on the other hand, are almost always unfairly treated and written off just because of some inane "lol weeb animu bewbs" sentiment that has absolutely no relation to the quality of the games themselves.

@@Horvath_Gabor you're not wrong (and a lot of JRPGs predate the genre getting "anime as balls"). But there are legitimate criticisms in terms of what the genre brings mostly because well... Honestly it's mostly because a lot of weebs demand cheap fanservice at the expense of characterization, and Yahtzee has pointed out a lot of these issues in the past.
