Correct me if I’m wrong but after looking around many mod videos for the 2021+: Less tunability because of a locked ECU so you’ll have to bring it in for tunes and can’t really do it yourself. Less power can be made after tunes due to the 6 port exit design compared to the 2 port in the older models. Less early power from the 6 port in the 2021+ = less fun on the street but of course more performance on the track. So it depends what you mean by missing out.

@slasheerr946

@@lclnbm In most cases, DCT's actually limit how much power you can add due to two clutches. That's why BMW went with ZF8 Speed in new M cars and this because they wanted to add way more torque and DCT's especially the BMW DCT were the weak point of the older M cars. However, DCT is and will always be more fun to drive especially it literally bangs when you shift gears and make a great noise like steel cut gears lol

@LearningFast

tluu91420 yes really. Only 3 current turbo cars have a compression ratio at or above 11:0. One of those cars is hybrid built for fuel economy more than performance. All of the BMW cars that are supposed to share the same engine have lower compression ratios. With a boosted car you need a lower compression ratio in order to achieve really high boost pressures. Toyota intentionally handicapped the 2020 Supra by giving it a high compression ratio. It doesn’t mean it is a bad car or can’t achieve decent results. It just simply means that you can achieve the same or much better performance results with the 2021 Supra than you can with the 2020 Supra.

Matt Maran Motoring - Thanks. Some of the articles on the Supra say the company may still make a manual. I’m thinking maybe I should wait? There seems to enthusiasm for a manual by customers like us! The chief engineer was quoted recently saying the manual is under consideration. They may put it in a more powerful Supra with 500hp or the 2.0 like BMW’s. So maybe it’s worth waiting. Patience seems to be a virtue with this yearly policy of continuing upgrades to keep interest going. Thanks. I still like my Bullitt but I’d prefer a more nimble Cayman like experience but at a better price point. The only Cayman to get now is the GTS 4.0 but the entry price is steep!

But who wants a car you can buy all day used w/1800 mioes and 3 yrs old, cuz clearly there not a functional daily as everyone who owns them screams savagely that they are in fact a DD...but yet arent driven daily, based on resale miles and oil consumption and eng noise. The 3 actual verified cars I know of that had rod bolts loose coming off the transports, and needed new warranty engs before even being bought/titled, just shows the Bullitt is much more reliable as is manufactured, and cheaper to do routine maintainance/oil chgs/brake component updates/repairs, and other consumables. I guess im saying, they can keep there A8 inline turbo, and I will keep my .308 Caliber Bullitt. Drive the whls of it, and enjoy the legacy cost of ownership vs these Japanese imports, which are clearly nice cars, but no Bullitt, imo. Lastly, these 180° cranks were a problem in the 70s Nascar engs, a issue in the late 80s, 500" NH/IHRA PROSTOCK engines, and Im not convinced they have the counter balanced cranks to the point where they dont , "as an episode of Mission Impossible states", will self desctruct in 5 seconds..( ok.. 50,000 seconds, = less than 1000 hrs) "Mustang Bullitt's ~Still the Best lookin 🐎 in the Glue 🏭 " (once the Tremec is installed anyhow, lol) All kidding aside my friend.. As always, great job Matt on the supra. Really cool car 😎. Don't be inhaling too of that much 308 Caliber Bullitt's smoke when stuck behind one on those Penn state roadways, in ur 6cyl - 1 lunger, turbo...lol. U know we luv ya.. but gotta give u a hard time, or all this car stuff wouldn't be any fun to banter about.

It is critical to understand that at no point in the entire rev range does the 2020 Supra have more torque or more horsepower than the 2021 Supra. Even though the peak Horsepower comes on later in the 2021 model it is still producing more torque and horsepower than the 2020 model at its peak numbers. The engine in the 2021 model is superior to the 2020 model in every single aspect.

Are the upgrades like the piston and Exhaust or even the tune, BMW? Or Toyota has upgraded the engine? BMW doesn’t have a 400+B58 in their lineup.

BLACK BIMMER this is the same motor as in the BMW Z4 M40i. It is similar but with significant revisions compared to the 2020 Supra. As you know, BMW underrates their engines so the 2021 Supra was actually dyno’d by C&D and found to have 380 HP at the wheels (approx 440 HP at the flywheel).
@MattMaranMotoring

It's the same improvements the Z4 M40i engine has, which is why the HP numbers for the two are identical now. Toyota made the other tuning changes though.
@mrjjthor

I don't think Toyota can "upgrade" the engine because bmw is still liable for any defects and recalls. Toyota is just responsible for tuning and calibration of the GR Supra but that doesn't mean they can crank up the boost or upgrade any parts without BMWs consent.

No because the '20 was underrated as well. So the '20 on the dyno was closer to what the '21 is claiming now, but the '21 on dyno is higher than what it's claiming. So about the same ~40hp difference in both cases.

In the past, Supras were built on chassis from Toyota's business (Chaiser, Mark, Cressida, Aristo) sedans and had engines from them in order to showcase brand's power and pride. The only thing new Supra showcases - Toyotas greasiness and shame. V35A-FTS could easily be factory tuned to have around 500hp without sacrificing reliability, only fuel economy and remissions. This engine already have proven itself be reliable, despite it's complex modern design. It can make 600hp with simple ECU tune, which already exists. And Toyota's open deck, with cast iron sleeves designes are really strong, there are even 1000hp builds based on Toyota's i4 2AR-FE blocks. And cooling along with crankshaft strength is better in V engines. It would be one hell of a Supra on TNGA-N platform from new Crown, it would have front mid engine layout, just like the Crown does. They also could tune Aisin 10 speed for more sporty behaviour.. And no one would care about it having v6 instead of i6 as no one cares that original R32 GTR had RB i6 where is modern once have v6es. I am really glad that this Supra has very bad sales and i hope that new Nissan Z will put final nail in the coffin of this abomination. If you like BMW then buy BMW. There is Japanese automotive pride and history. Technology and engineering wise Japanese have been among leaders since 1980s Back than their metallurgy technology was far superior than that in other countries and only they could build long stroke engines that were high revving, due to mass production of light and strong crankshafts. They were smooth, economical and powerful even before ECUs. That's how they concarade the world. Then they showed how injection, variable valve timing, active awd systems and turbocharging is done properly and reliably. They were also first to implement these technologies in mass production of affordable vehicles. And they always use high quality materials and components for their engines and transitions along with proper, reliability conscious injenering. And no Toyota has ashamed itself and betrayed Toyota fans and japanese car fans in general. Shame.

Yea but the B58 is closed deck and doesnt need much of anything to make 600whp Or even more than that simply without doing much to it alone. People don't really go around modding Toyotas V6s like its a common thing vs things like the N54 i6,Vr30ddtt V6,VQ37 V6,and N55 i6 which are all open deck engines that are commonly seen pushing 500-800whp commonly and are practically ticking time bombs at the power level. Not like it can't handle it cause it more than likely can but it's risky to do if there hasn't been a number of people who've thrown them in the that range of power like the rest of these open deck engines are too. Practically which would u want. A engine that's closed deck,has a forged crank,and a forged bottom end that are known for handling 500-700whp with ease with only minimal mods or a V6 thats open deck that isn't well known for too much of anything but reliability but doesn't have much of anyone rolling around with more power than stock to really put it up their with other open engines. People just don't build most of any modem Toyota engines as much as they do with bmw's i6s. Other than the ar I4s that Toyota makes there's not a lot of people doing much of anything with Toyotas 3.5L V6s,5.0 V8s,or 5.7L V8s other than old engines like the 2jz,3sgte,1jzs,or the UZ series.
