Alex, 'Fantastically Nuts' is in the title then you call it bonkers. Please clarify if the Defender is nuts or bonkers as the distinction could be crucial to some prospective buyers . 😉 On a serious note, your spare tire placement debate 4:22 was very thorough. I would only add that I would welcome a swing out tailgate as I am sick and tired of banging my head on the pop up tailgate. If buyers don't do serious off road driving, why did they buy a heavy duty, gas guzzling 4X4 in the first place? 🤔 I cannot miss the opportunity to implore Toyota to add a fourth, 2 door 4X4 to the market to compete with Wrangler, Bronco and Defender. Lastly, do those skylights remind anyone else of an Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser? 😁

One thing Alex has touched on in past reviews is he doesn’t talk much about reliability in brands or models because the cars he reviews are all brand new, so the reliability of that exact model is unknown. Certain car companies definitely have reputations of being more reliable than others. Japanese brands- Toyota/Lexus, Honda/Acura, Mazda, Subaru- are well known for their reliability, but even these brands have had models that had issues. And then there are brands that historically are known for poor reliability, like hyundai and Kia, but you’ll have people with vehicles from those companies with 300k miles and little issues. So it would be a guess at best for him to add anything beyond routine maintenance.

First, this review is good example of why you should add reliability stats/metrics to your reviews. Enough info on Defender out there now. Speaking for myself, this review is not quite balanced. It's a paradox if a Defender, with all the off-road capability, leaves you stranded off road. Secondly, even mentioning the Defender in the same sentence as/with the G class is taking the comparison too far (not a close match in enginnering generally, engine, transmission, suspensions, other mechanicals, electronics, interior, presence, handling or performance).

You keep calling this an "upgrade" over the Bronco and the Jeep, but in reality it isn't as good off-road, it has a great chance of going wrong while you're on a trail and not getting you back at all, the interior is hardly an upgrade, and it costs a lot more. If you're after a cool looking mall crawler, I can see you driving a Defender, if you actually want to go offroad no one will seriously consider this pile.

Gotta correct you Alex, there IS a difference between 4WD and AWD. AWD vehicles have 4 wheels spinning full time and lack a low range for serious off roading. 4WD vehicles normally operate in 2WD until you engage 4WD and they have a low range transfer case.
@LionRunner
Жыл бұрын
@vido4x4 AWD vehicles are mostly 2WD until it react to slip then the viscous coupling or electromagnetic engages with foot on the gas. Still it will not give controlled 50:50 split. Its a variable power by the amount of throttle input you give. Some AWD vehicles have a button for 50:50 split generally limited to 25mph. VS on 4WD vehicles when you are in 4WD regardless your foot on gas or not, regardless a slip or not, regardless your speed 10mph or 100mph you have 4 wheels spinning full time. If one don't like to switch 2wd to 4wd one can always get fulltime 4wd with torsen center diff.

@@EpicDrew15 It´s 2023, modern vehicles are run by dozens of computers, so yes manufacturers can program all different types of operating parameters into their AWD systems. But the defining difference between AWD vs. 4WD (or 4x4) vehicles are the two characteristics I mentioned in my original post.

I am with Alex. There is no clear definitions here. How many wheels does the vehicle have? four. How many provide drive/power all of them. Yes All four wheel drive. Otherwise you get into some really strange requirements and it becomes very nuanced. Does it have a center diff? Does it have a locking center diff? Does it have a low range? does it have locking rear diff? does it have locking front diff? Is it on demand? Then what about EV power-trains? Is a Rivian AWD or 4WD?
@vido4x4

@@joetacchino4470 Subaru has ¨symmetrical AWD¨. BMW has Xdrive. Merc Benz calls their´s 4matic. ALL are AWD systems. But if you look at the interior of a vehicle marked with 4x4 badging, it has a lever, knob or shifter to switch into 4WD AND has a low range transfer case. Those are industry characteristics of a 4WD vehicle. But I agree the nomenclature is no longer clear or definitive because of the variations of AWD systems.
