I had this car a few month back as a family hauler and so far, I think it's perfect for us. First of, it's very spacious. It can accommodate 2 adults in the 3rd row seat easily and doesn't make us feel uncomfortable for a long trip. Second, the drive-train is smooth and refine. The ride quality is good with quiet cabin and minimum wind noise / road noise. It makes a few days road trip for family a breeze. Of course it makes body roll when entering the corner but that's to be expected with a big SUV. The steering is light for easy maneuvering in the city and getting harder once you have some speed in the highway. Thirdly, the engine is quite peppy with early torque in the low RPM and it only needs regular, not premium gas. All the driving assistance are there (adaptive cruise control, emergency break, lane changing assistance, etc), even with the lower trim level. Last but not least, the infotainment system which receives the most criticized, is quite intuitive ONCE you get used to it. For the volume and temperature control, you're not supposed to TAP it, but rather TOUCH and SLIDE. The infotainment screen is big and bright and the touch screen is very responsive, unlike the tiny screen in some competitor like Honda Pilot, or small and non-touch like Mazda CX-90. Once you're familiar with it, you never miss the old knob and physical buttons. All in all, it's the epitome of an all-rounder.

As someone who used to love Volkswagens, I stay far away from them now… let me tell you once that warranty expires then you’re screwed… a lot of local mechanic shops, tire shops, auto repair shops, will not touch Volkswagens. They say those cars are a mess to work with. Not because they are bad cars. But because Volkswagen makes it impossible for anyone to do any maintenance or repair work on them. Their cars require special tools and parts that many mechanics don’t have. I mean it’s not just a Volkswagen, but mostly European cars. I get it, European cars use different parts. But it’s particularly Volkswagen that makes it even harder than any other European car to work on in the US if it’s outside a VW dealer. It sucks because it’s literally impossible to keep this car long term unless you’re financially stable and don’t mind spending thousands of dollars a year on maintenance once that warranty expires. Volkswagen makes it to where you have to rely solely on them. And that’s where they lost my respect.. just be careful when you purchase a Volkswagen. Know what you’re getting yourself into.

For this 6 or 7 passenger vehicle, I would like to see the test include the equivalent of at least four passengers and their luggage, each passenger of average weight of about 175 pounds, and luggage of about 35 pounds each, 4x(175+30), for a total weight of about 820 pounds. The numbers with just the driver and maybe a camera man is not representative of how this 6 or 7 passenger vehicle will be used.

Having owned both, this is an apples to oranges comparison. The atlas is a roomy capable sponge of an SUV, also the R line used to be more than just visual package. What a joke....the Q7 is a sporty, more capable and far nicer vehicle. We only miss the rear captain chairs in the atlas!

Great video. VW needs to dump the turbos and put a 100HP electric hybrid system to greatly increase the performance. VW has a fantastic Performance Hybrid that is faster, gets better MPG, and way out performs this old, outdated turbo 4 cyl. Once again, a MFG're pushing this outdated technology. WTF!

Needs a power adjustable steering column. Its also time to get rid of the center console mounted shifter and start button. These are family vehicles, and that means copious amounts of storage. The shifter take up all that otherwise very usable space. In addition, cup holder should always come with a cover so they don't become littered mini trash bins when not in use. The car could also use some bump stops on the sliding seats. That "clunk" at the end is very cheap sounding. On the bright side, the rear view USB is a very unique and special item. Too bad there's not one in the rear. The black chrome is a good idea, and I'd expand that to the interior and the infotainment display. Digital rear view mirror is a definite need for all SUVs. Especially for those coupefied types. Too bad the Germans haven't yet adapted that convenience feature.

Had a 2019 SEL Premium. We were probably in the dealership every other month (No exaggeration). Least reliable car we ever owned as the car lights up like a Christmas tree with some kind of electrical fault often. Some of the problems we had were water leak from 1st row dome light, water leak from trunk from bad seal, air bag failure code, adaptive cruise control error code, ect. Battery died right at 36 months of ownership as well and front rotors were warped before 36k miles. These repairs are extremely expensive as VW is a euro car and require special parts and coding of ECU.

I'm not super sold on the new Atlas Cross Sport because the 2.0T seems like too small an engine for such a large, towing capable SUV. Just to put into perspective, my Audi A4 2007 had this same motor and it didn't even have towing. I think VW should've added a turbo to the 3.6L v6 engine instead of going with a smaller motor. That would've increased mpg figures and also added more power to the vehicle. I also don't like the interior of the car which is too touch screen dependent. I kinda prefer the recent year Audis where those middle of the cabin screens where hidden inside the dash. Plus in my view, its much safer to have physical controls for things like climate control, instead of a touchscreen. This is also one of the reasons I dislike Tesla touchscreens.
@chrism869

I mean the touch controlls are a bit much, but I'm a big tech guy so I like that, and the engine is perfectly fine for the normally daily driving, and powerfull enough so that it won't be dangerously slow
