The Epic 2500 Nm Trans-Mediterranean Sailing Yacht Expedition
Embark on a British heritage classic racing sail yacht, akin to those seen in the Royal Berth at the Cowes Isle of Wight Royal Yacht Club. This video marks the first trans-Mediterranean expedition on a racing sailing yacht, traversing the entire length of the Mediterranean Sea from West to East, successfully accomplished by a crew from post-communism Romania 20 years ago in 2004 by A. Rochian, G. Baras, A. Popsa, and A. Micu
My colleagues and friends, George Baras, Adrian Popsa, and Alex Micu, demonstrated exceptional qualities of courage, calm, resourcefulness, resilience, modesty, patience, moderation, and sound judgment. For three months, they sailed, taking four-hour around-the-clock watches at the helm in the cockpit, enduring 24-hour days and nights through cold weather, rain, and severe winds.
The expedition was marked by extremely violent storms, such as one episode in the Gulf of Corinth near Missolonghi, where waves reached 5-6 meters.
To commemorate the 20th anniversary of our arrival at Tomis Harbour, Constanta, on the Black Sea, I have recreated the classic British sailing yacht Rocquette in 3D CAD. This former racing champion, designed and built by Camper and Nicholsons in 1962, is depicted with the crew members: Baras George, Micu Alexandru, Popsa Adrian, and Andrei Rochian.

Our journey began on April 12, 2004, setting sail for the Black Sea from Marina Imperia in Italy, aboard Rocquette, designed by Peter Nicholson at Mere House in Hamble, Southampton. Built in 1963 by Camper & Nicholsons in Gosport, Hants, United Kingdom, Rocquette is crafted from cold-molded mahogany wood over strip planking.

Enduring frequent force 7-8 storms and gales, we executed watch rotations diligently. Our route led us to breathtaking destinations, including the Island of Corsica, Nettuno in Italy, Stromboli, Messina, Badolato in the Gulf of Squillace, and the captivating Island of Ithaca in Greece.
Navigating through the Missolonghi Gulf in Patras, we sailed through Corinth and explored the vibrant city of Athens, docking at Marina Zea.
Taking shelter from a violent storm on the Island of Kea, we then ventured to Chios and Lesbos, ultimately reaching Çanakkale and Istanbul/Kadikoy.
As we traversed the Bosphorus, defying the currents, Rocquette showcased her prowess, achieving a maximum speed of 6 knots. On June 18, after braving the sea’s challenges, we arrived safely at the yacht harbor in Constanta, Romania, marking the triumphant conclusion of our maritime journey.
To conclude our adventure, we embarked on an enchanting Danube River cruise. Sailing against the current, Rocquette demonstrated her resilience, cruising at a maximum speed of 6 knots. On June 28, we reached the Oltenitza river port, approximately 60 km from Bucharest, where Rocquette was loaded on a truck and transported to our yard in Bucharest. There, she underwent extensive reconstruction to restore this magnificent vessel to her former glory.
