I recently asked our KZitem community, "What climbing moves or techniques do you struggle with due to flexibility?"" The responses were clear-many of the toughest moves require strong hip flexibility and the ability to bring your feet high.
In this video, we break down the mechanics of these challenging moves and provide 2-3 key stretches and exercises to boost both your flexibility and climbing performance.
1. The High Step
The most commonly mentioned issue was the high step-a move that demands deep hip flexion without compromising your upper body positioning. I share a little-known tip for improving this technique by focusing on developing hip extension, which can make a significant difference.
2. Foot-Hand Match
Second on the list was the foot-hand match, a tricky move for climbers who don’t have the reach of an orangutan. With the right technique cues and targeted flexibility training, this move becomes much more manageable.
3. Bridging and Stemming
Rounding out the top three was bridging and stemming-essential for climbing corners and wide positions. To master these techniques, you need to improve both your side split and pancake fold. I’ll introduce you to a powerful exercise that helps develop both at the same time.
