Sounds like same set up you'd use for other bass as well. I've learned big swim jig with a large fluke gets striper as well as large spoon casting if you want to get your spoon out far. If striper are close a large flutter spoon works great too

I'm surprised that you don't use bucktail for deep jigging or slow trolling. Bucktails are my go too lure. Sure people can catch on top water but 80% of the big ones are in 15 to 30 feet during hot weather feeding. I have caught strippers all day long in all kinds of conditions. The only thing I changed was the weight of my bucktail. Going from 3/8 to 1 oz pending on current and depths I'm marking. I will use my trolling motor at 1/2 to 1 mph if I have more than 1 rod in or I will do a combination of anchoring and jig or cast and sometimes both. I have never come home without at least 4-6 nice strippers, if they are under 24 inches I release them for another day, with 1 note: if they are been pulled up from 30 plus feet I keep them because they will more than likely die once they hit hot water temps of 85 or better. They usually have a very difficult time getting back down and go into shock. I'm not saying all will die but 50% chance that it will die. I'm specifically talking about lake strippers where O2 in hot water is very low.

Great stuff! I've only fished for stripers for about 1 year-round season but I love the fight that they give and catching them is always a plus. That said, in my limited year experience, I've only caught stripers on 2 lures: a hair jig and a 3/0 hook with a shad profile soft plastic (Z-Man Razor shad).

Yes! They all will, IF you have fish schooling close enough to shore. You have to find schools, which will be topwater at dawn near the dam in summer, feeder rivers/creeks spring, all over winter. deep daytime in summer

Also out here in NorCal in the Sacramento river/American River they use jerk baits like SP Minnow (diving jerkbaits, reel and twitch a couple times) in 120 and 168 size or 4.5 inch to 6 inch, bone white is hot now. Many guys change the hooks to stronger ones or single 2/0 hook, something like that. If there's 3 hooks on it some guys eliminate the middle hook too. When stripers are spread out and you need to cover the water quickly or you have a nice windy day that’s blowing bait against the points, jerkbaits are very effective. Probably one of the most effective (and pricey) is the MegaBass Ito Vision 110. At roughly $25, they work well! I like the Elegy Bone, French Pearl and Sexy Shad color patterns for the Delta and rivers. A step down but still deadly is the Luckycraft Pointer 110 in American Shad finish at about $12-13. The issue with jerkbaits for stripers is they usually come with light wire bass hooks that quickly get destroyed by stripers. So, I replace all mine with either No. 2 or No. 4 KVD Triple Grips. The trick here is find a hook that is stronger but won’t affect the action of the lure. I’d like to go with 3X or 4X strong models, but the neutral buoyancy of the lure would be compromised. The KVD hook seems to be a happy medium. They will still get beaten up by stripers eventually but they definitely last longer than the stock models do.

What about bank fishing? What do I need?
@LakeHubTV
2 жыл бұрын
Number one, you need to find a spot to fish that can access DEEP water as close as possible. That's half the battle. If there's visible topwater activity, then the Choppo (or Whopper Plopper) are the ticket. If you don't see topwater, then you're going to have to get deep and find where they're at in the water column. You can use live bait (watch this video kzitem.info/news/bejne/kWOPsmZ9rYCgpGk), or go with larger, lighter colored / shad patterened swimbaits and diving crank baits. Longer rather than fatter, similar to the Choppo's.

@LakeHubTV

That's a great lure from shore if you have a school of striper within reach that are slapping the surface. Throw it right into the mayhem. But if there isn't any topwater action, then you need to go deep - large lighter colored swimbaits and deep-diving long silvery crankbaits

Tip, only use top water lures when you see top water action/feeding which only last about a hour in morning, afternoon and evening feeding which most bank fishermen can't reach unless your fishing a point with a steep drop from the bank, example 15 -30 feet drop that you can cast into.
