No accountant, no network yet, working 12 hours a day, willing to take all jobs because I can't even afford to buy everything I need for my business... It looks like I'm going through the same steps as you did at the beginning! I'll try to be careful, thank you for the tips ;)

I've been working as a freelance foreign language tutor for over a year. Although I already intuitively knew all these tips but I'm hopeful that listening to someone actually say them out loud will make me change my way of working :D I feel I haven't been doing great this year so I wanna make progress and enhance my work routine :) Thank you for sharing such important pieces of advice!

Great video Adrian, as usual! I found the third tip very important. When you start working as a freelance translator, it’s really tempting to accept any kind of job and work 24/7 to keep you busy. Mental and physical health are the most important thing if you want to succeed.
@Freelanceverse
3 жыл бұрын
Cheers, Alessio! Exactly, it's tempting. I'm still not exactly sure what the right approach is there. On the one hand I guess it's part of the journey and it's good to keep busy and try everything you can to gain experience, but on the other hand you're not only undermining your own abilities and worth, but also the entire industry's. I guess the point is to get out of this situation as quickly as possible.

Hi Adrian, Thank you very much for creating these videos. I'm someone who works full-time but is exploring the possibility of leaving to pursue my own self-employed career in translation & writing. I haven't taken the leap yet, but I will look to begin to grow this into a profitable side-business in 2021. I find your videos really helpful. I've learned so much through watching your channel and now always come here first should I need to learn something about translation. Keep up the good work!

@@Freelanceverse Thank you, Adrian! I do marketing related translations - blog, SEO, product/service descriptions - mostly from Polish, but also from English, Italian, German and Romanian into Hungarian. My father is Italian, my mother is Hungarian and after my parents divorced, I grew up in Hungary with mom. That's why Hungarian became my mother tongue. Your Swiss story is also interesting! Growing up in Switzerland can definitely be a huge advantage to become a translator. (: Greetings to you and your Hungarian girlfriend! Have a nice day!

Thank you! (: By the way, I would be curious, if you think in Swiss or standard German, when you think about something or when you dream. Unfortunately, I don't know anyone from Switzerland besides you, but I saw a video on KZitem about the differences between the two versions and in my opinion they are really huge. (:
@Freelanceverse

They are huge for sure. I definitely think in Swiss German. Spoken High German feels like a very close foreign language to me. And written High German feels perfectly normal. Very strange dynamic indeed, there is definitely a video planned on that sometime next year :)

Heyy Adi! Very interesting video :-) I definitely also made your first mistake (and probably many more^^). I didn’t realise how important a network is and how much it would have helped me to grow. How did you realise that you’d be much better off with a network? And how did you overcome this mistake?
@Freelanceverse
3 жыл бұрын
Hey Luki, thanks for the comment :) I'm still working on that constantly. One of my main goals for this year was in fact to improve my network - especially the real life one, but well... that didn't go as planned :D so I had to refocus and try to do something else. That's partly the reason why I started this channel as well. I'd say I noticed it after my business had become sustainable, because that's when this first motivation buzz disappears a bit and you are faced with normalcy. But if I had realised it earlier, the journey could have been easier I think :)

Thanks Adrian great tips. How would you recommend someone to start in this field even if they have many years of experience in another field?
@danceillusions13

At what point do you recommend consulting an accountant? I'm currently pursuing an MA in Translation. Should I get an accountant as soon as I start freelancing, or only once I'm making a certain amount?
@Freelanceverse
3 жыл бұрын
hmm that's hard to answer in general. I got one when I moved to Belgium. Just cause I didn't want to deal with a new tax system and I got recommended a trustworthy partner. At that point, I had been freelancing for about 2 years and had a steady income. I guess before that it doesn't make much sense yet.
@danceillusions13

@@Freelanceverse so in the first two years of your translation work, you'd been managing to figure taxes out all on your own?
@Freelanceverse
3 жыл бұрын
Yes. To be fair, I was in the Netherlands and they made it super easy especially for companies in the first 3 years. So I guess it also depends on how well you know the tax system in your country of residence. It's certainly possible to do it on your own, but for me I figured out that it's not worth the effort compared to the investment of hiring someone.
